I've known this farm stay for a few years now and finally got a chance to spend half a week there with my family last monsoon. We loved the place so much so that we decided to go there again this year with my brother and sister-in-law, where we had the entire Cheddar House at our disposal. Every cottage has been tastefully designed with a lot of inputs from the genuinely hospitable owners Mansoor and Tina. The cottages there have a very homely atmosphere which might compel you to extend your stay there. Personally, I'd recommend Cheddar House for its charming architecture and secluded location.
As regards food: Being vegetarians we thought we got a raw deal last time as the food was not up to our expectations. However, they totally made up for last year's let down by serving us simple yet scrumptious vegetarian food, all thanks to their experienced cook from Maharashtra. The lady dishes out some amazing veg. curries and chutneys. You can also sample some or go all out on the generous helpings of fresh, farm made cheese served during breakfast everyday.
If you want to go shopping or try local food, Coonoor town is accessible with some effort at about 4 kms away from the farm. Mansoor and Tina are great hosts who are quite generous sharing their wealth of knowledge with guests. You might learn a thing or two about Cheese making, cinema, the environment or growth conundrums if you strike conversations with either of them. Mary, the lady who works like an ox, manages the housekeeping along with her dairy farm and cheese-making duties. Munna, the manager, is quite resourceful and can help you with the necessary arrangements if you want to go on a picnic at nearby attractions.
If you plan to visit the farm with elderly people, it's recommended that you stay either at Colby Cottage or Haloumi, that are located relatively closer to the main building than Cheddar House. A word of caution: Don't venture out by foot in the evenings as herds of Gaurs graze the tea plantations along the road. We even spotted a pack of Dhols (wild dogs) during one afternoon.
Overall, having stayed here twice, I'd highly recommend Acres Wild to couples and families looking for a pleasant and memorable holiday in Nilgiris. Look forward to spending at least a week here next time.
