“Loved it but a little run down!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 31, 2009

I loved the whole romance of having to get to this hotel by boat! The service at the hotel is fabulous, the staff can not do enough for you. Our room was lovely with great views over the Lake. The lily pond is beautiful and they had set dinner up around it for New Years Eve. The pool area is a let down though, only 2 of the sunbeds actually get the sun, the rest are in the shade where it feels quite cool with the breeze off the water. This area definitely needs updated. We also tried Bhairo for dinner which was lovely, it is very romantic. Make sure you have something to keep you warm in the evenings as I found it very cool. There is a lovely outdoor area through one of the bars which is supposed to be for smokers but it is a great place to sit and soak up the sun rays whilst sipping a cocktail and then watching the amazing sunset!.

This is the best hotel we ever stayed in & the best service we ever had ! It is a must experience hotel at least once in a lifetime. You will be treated with royalty as name suggest. It is so beautiful inside that you will never feel to go out anywhere else. Enjoy !!

We chose to stay here to have a once-in-a-lifetime experience. We do not have the means to stay at Taj Hotels regularly but we saved our dollars diligently so we can stay here a couple of nights.

And what can I say? From the moment you are dropped off at the motor terrace next to where the boats are launched, you feel as if you've been transported to another era when only opulence was of the greatest concern. Then came the idyllic boat ride to the hotel and the shower of rose petals upon your arrival at the hotel.

We had an interior room reserved because I couldn't bring myself to splurge more money on the lake view room but the hotel very graciously upgraded us to a lake view room.

Everything about this hotel deserves acclaim - the pool, the spa, the breakfast buffet, the butler who served us dinner in our room (all three courses!) and finally, the staff. They even have an astrologer who will tell you your fortune.

On our second day, we tried to get back to the hotel in time to catch the tour of the hotel. When we arrived late, Amit, who was in charge of our stay, simply arranged for someone to give us a private tour. Your wish is their command.

Then came the end of our stay. We felt like Cinderella after the clock struck midnight as we sat in the Toyota Innova on the way to the airport where we would join other travelers in economy. Now I'm back at work saving money so I can stay at another Taj Hotel in the future.

  • Liked — Its history and opulence.
  • Disliked — Its prohibitive cost.

We absolutely loved this hotel and will definitely go back if we can afford it!! Everything about it is just beautiful and the attention to detail second to none. Even the swimming pool is spectacular, with fabulous views.

Service is so good and food delicious – if a little spicier than most other places we visited.

I cannot recommend it highly enough – save up and go!!

One of the great hotels in the world. This place is a feast for the eyes and the body. It starts with a boat ride - we were lucky to be in the boat with the General Manager. As you walk off the shuttle and walk up to reception, rose petals are dropped on you. The hotel itself is simple beautiful. It seems to have been conjured from a dream. Surprisingly, we were upgraded to a room up a steep set of stairs that was large and comfortable and came with a private terrace which could have held 50.

The service was impeccable and every luxury is available.

The only slight negative is the food. The Indian restaurant was good, but not great.

Spend the money and stay here.

Having just stayed at eight 5* hotels in India, we can honestly say this is the absolute best of the all, indeed it takes beating anywhere in the world. From the moment you step on to the boat with its bowl of sweets to when you walk up the steps and see rose petals floating down in front of you, covered by a Rajahstani umbrella held by the exquisitely dressed doorman, you know you're in for something special. The rooms are beautiful with views across the lake of course but it is the views inside across the beautiful gardens with hidden flutists gently playing that take one's breath away. The service everywhere is of the very highest standard. Nothing lets this hotel down. Even one week after the Mumbai tragedy, it had a calm serene atmosphere of welcome that left one aching to stay longer. Explore every corner of this hotel before you leave including the roof top restaurant.
