“Amazing Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 11, 2009

We absolutely loved this hotel and will definitely go back if we can afford it!! Everything about it is just beautiful and the attention to detail second to none. Even the swimming pool is spectacular, with fabulous views.

Service is so good and food delicious – if a little spicier than most other places we visited.

I cannot recommend it highly enough – save up and go!!

One of the great hotels in the world. This place is a feast for the eyes and the body. It starts with a boat ride - we were lucky to be in the boat with the General Manager. As you walk off the shuttle and walk up to reception, rose petals are dropped on you. The hotel itself is simple beautiful. It seems to have been conjured from a dream. Surprisingly, we were upgraded to a room up a steep set of stairs that was large and comfortable and came with a private terrace which could have held 50.

The service was impeccable and every luxury is available.

The only slight negative is the food. The Indian restaurant was good, but not great.

Spend the money and stay here.

Having just stayed at eight 5* hotels in India, we can honestly say this is the absolute best of the all, indeed it takes beating anywhere in the world. From the moment you step on to the boat with its bowl of sweets to when you walk up the steps and see rose petals floating down in front of you, covered by a Rajahstani umbrella held by the exquisitely dressed doorman, you know you're in for something special. The rooms are beautiful with views across the lake of course but it is the views inside across the beautiful gardens with hidden flutists gently playing that take one's breath away. The service everywhere is of the very highest standard. Nothing lets this hotel down. Even one week after the Mumbai tragedy, it had a calm serene atmosphere of welcome that left one aching to stay longer. Explore every corner of this hotel before you leave including the roof top restaurant.

Maybe it was caught off guard. We arrived from Udaivillas Hotel so no Rose Petals for us. Reception would match any 3/4 star hotel. Rooms very small, but comfortable. Nice touch of sending me 20 red roses and a get well card. I was not well. It was my wifes 50th and the the roses were meant for her. Some cross wires I suppose.
The staff greeted my wife belated happy Birthday and asked if liked the Roses! The roof top restaurant has a limited vegetarian menu. Views are good, but that you can get from many locations in Udaipur. The Staff were freindly and also prepared a lemon drink for me to settle my tummy. I would not rush back to this hotel.

My parents and I spent three days there in late September. The whole property has been restored a couple of years ago and is back in great shape.

We had two ground floor, City Palace-facing rooms (115 and 114 I believe) which were large enough to fit, in addition to a queen size bed, two small chaiselongues and a desk with the most breathtaking view ever.

Facilities are very good: there's a pool with two jacuzzis with, again, an incredible view of the palace and a well-equipped gym; the restaurants are both very good (in the non-Indian restaurant try to go for the table in the niche, where the view is best). The rooftop terrace is closed during monsoon season I believe, but it's still worth exploring the terrace in the evenings.

A special mention goes to service. It was good in all the Taj hotels we stayed in (Rambagh and Umaid Bhawan), but at the Lake Palace it was best: efficient, timely and most of all unintrusive. I asked for a DVD to be delivered to my room, and when I came out of the shower I found the DVD I requested, with a bag of complimentary popcorn and two complimentary cans of Diet Coke.

During our stay we also visited Rajvilas (as when we booked we couldn't decide where to stay): yes it is more opulent - all shiny marbles and baroque fabrics - and the rooms are more spacious and luxurious, but if it is a charming, romantic, fairy-tale setting you're looking for then the Lake Palace it should be.

We stayed at the Lake palace for two nights for our honeymoon and savoured every minute of it. The service was incredible. The view from the rooftop restaurant in the evening was breathtaking. The hindu prayers coming from the mandir (Jagdish) across the lake added to the surrealness of the atmosphere. We actually enjoyed the food of the Indian restaurant more than the rooftop restaurant, not to take away from the latter.

Only downside was the frigid temperature of the pool.

If you can handle the sticker shock of the price for even a night, it is definitely worth the experience, and it justifies its consistent high ranking in world travel magazines...
