“A very interesting museum with good exhibits”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 6, 2013

We visited the museum at Bagore Ki Haveli and it is a lovely place to visit - nice and cool in the heat of the day and it has some interesting exhibits. Some of the rooms have been re-constructed, some are in the process of re-construction and some have been left as they were. This is nice as you can see the different stages/processes. There was also an interesting collection of turbans from different regions - with lovely photographs beside each exhibit. And don't forget to visit the Wedding Room.

We didn't attend the cultural event in the evening so can't comment on that (though it sounded very lively from the surrounding area)!

The museum is well worth a visit (and it was only 30 rupees).

“Enchanting dance performance in the evening”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 5, 2013

Wonderful night performance by local women dancers doing daring feats with fire on their heads and cymbals on the hands and feet. Also entertaining puppetry show. A very pleasant and enjoyable performance.

“Palace, museum, a quiet retreat”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 28, 2013

This 128 room palace on the lake gives you an interesting look at life in India. You will have admired its wonderful lakeside architechture fascade during your lake boat ride (just to the left of the City Palace). Most interesting is the dioramas of almost lifesize figures in traditional dress with descriptions in English showing the ritual of an arranged marriage. There is a room full of different turbans, some antique furniture, interesting architecture and lake views. Since you will be almost alone here, it is a unique and quiet moment and easy to do without a guide. [entrance fee $1.10]. This area next to the City Palace if full of interesting shops on tiny lanes. Ashoka Arts located in the inner courtyard of the Namaste French Bakery, has a large selection of 'miniature paintings' at good prices. A beautiful frame of your choice, made in 2 hours with glass, cost less than $8 with purchase. They also give lesson and demonstrate miniature painting and will paint henna on your arms.

“I visited twice, once for the museum, and again for the dance show.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 26, 2013 via mobile

I found the building architecturally interesting and the depictions of lives of the Mewar elite were quite informative. There were few people in the museum and I enjoyed quietly checking out the exhibits including the huge puppet room. The evening show is well attended. It begins at 7:00 PM not sharp (hey, it's India). 200 rupees for a foreigner with camera. If you want to be shoeless sitting on mats (front row) get there at 6:30 PM. If sitting on chairs in the rear 6:45 PM is okay. After that your sight lines will be blocked by a pillar or tree. The ladies are talented dancers performing traditional dance that glorifies village life. If you look carefully at the coordination required during the dance with balls on small chains to avoid injuring themselves then you realize that mothers were passing skills to their sons to be one day used in warfare. The flames on the head are visually energizing, the daggers in the mouths less so. The most talented and senior dancer leads the towering pots on head finale. The Indian audience was enthralled and so appreciative that this ancient art is still practiced. Shout out to the puppeteer for the comical interlude and how smart to get audience kids into the act. People who say this is a waste of time should not have left home. Did they really travel to India to watch CNN on the TV at their hotel's lobby bar and call it a vacation?
