“A magical and friendly haven in Jodhpur”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 28, 2013

We stayed 2 nights at Juna Mahal and we really loved it. It's very quirky and has a magical feel...we stayed in the Shiva room, which was great. The shower facilities were good, with hot water and power. Josi and his family were incredibly helpful and welcoming.
The rooftop restaurant really does have a beautiful view over the town and the fort...very romantic...and the food is excellent.
We were expecting the outside to be dirty following one of the reviews on this site, but on the contrary, Juna Mahal is just off the main street and is clean and well kept.
If you are used to 5 star hotels, then this may not be for you...but otherwise, if you want a unique and different experience in Jodhpur, I highly recommend this hotel.
I would come back on our next trip there...

Great location and the building is absolutely beautiful. Service generally good, however beware of recommendations as we were advised to go to "cheaper" stores and avoid the guide book suggestions, but these store were at least double/triple the price.
Rooftop was one of the best in jodhpur.

Definitely worth staying at.

Had an excellent stay at Juna mahal. The room was spacious, very clean, and in general very relaxing. The location is quite good too. The back entrance to the mehrangarh fort is a walk away, and it is right on the market street leading up to the clock tower, the main shopping area. In general they catered to our requests promptly. the only issue was their PC and internet wasn't working, which was a little inconvenient.

Room Tip: we got the shiva room, which was sufficiently spacious and had good heritage decor to it.

It's a bit hard to find but after a day you'll know how to navigate to and from the Clock Tower. The building is apparently a former Brahmin priest's residence, an exquisite traditional building and tastefully furnished. The room which I had overlooking the front courtyard was immaculate. The restaurant on the roof terrace was O.K. apart from a bit of teenage angst by the "manager". If you have a late train to catch, the owner will let you stay and have a shower well into the evening.

Some warnings: despite the blue walls which are supposed to repel mosquitoes, our six-legged friends take no prisoners, so bring some repellent and/or an "All Out" plug-in device. They shouldn't be around in the dry season but the drainage channels get blocked and allow them to breed. Also the place is not without the usual Indian ingredient of street noise. Finally, mind your head when crossing a doorway if you're more than 5 feet tall!

Otherwise a very comfortable stay and because there is only a handful of rooms, you're bound to meet some fellow guests.

I recently stayed in Juna mahal. The experience was great. We checked in at midnight and the place definitely looked spooky with no one around and big walls echoing your voice. But even after the sleep of the guy who handles the front office was disturbed by us, he was awake in few minutes and helped us check into our rooms. The breakfast in the roof top restaurant was great. Also the management were really sweet. Since we checked in at midnight and our train was only at 7pm the next day, they let us stay the extended period and did not charge us extra. They also helped us with places to shop and they gave us a good choice of places to pick from our shopping lists. Also the market place and the arch (which is also a shopping spot) are walking distance from the hotel. You just need to walk out and take the right and the shops start right from there. Don't miss the chat shop on the left which sells the best mirchi! In all, a great place to stay, the rooms r small but done in typical rajasthani style and the bathrooms were CLEAN.

Right in the heart of the old city, short walk up the hill to the Palace this beautifuly
renovated old building is a delight to stay in.This was a little more upmarket
than our usual stays (we paid 1500 a night and I gather that was a discount rate)
but it was worth every rupee for our stay in jodhpur. The restaurant on top
has a great view of the old city. The room was about as confortable as it gets
in India. The owner Mr Joshi (he also owns the backpacker Cozy Guesthouse round
the corner) goes out of his way to be helpful, and deserves full praise for his efforts.

My husband and I have visited Jodhpur twice and both times stayed here. We were lucky to find it the first time and knew when we came back we would stay at the same place. The rooftop cafe is a brilliant place to hang out and absorb this atmospheric city and enjoy an impressive view of the fort. They serve very reasonable food and also provide filter coffee (!!!) which if you've traveled in India much you know is very hard to come by. The rooms are beautifully appointed, comfortable and clean and Joshi and his family are so friendly and accommodating. The location is wonderful, with a ten minute walk in one direction you can be at the quiet, back entrance to the fort where you can explore staircases and crannies without another person in sight and in the other direction be at the clock tower and market. Why stay anywhere else?
