“A great introduction to authentic India”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 1, 2011

We had been wanting to visit India for many years, but not on the hackneyed tourist beat. Bristow's haveli was a perfect starting point - a haven of peace assembled with genuine antiques from the wrecks of three old havelis right in the centre of the medieval city of Jodhpur, under the shadow of the mountain-top ancient fort, and with its own secluded garden - the only one in the old city. The manager was discreet but full of local knowledge and advice, arranging anything we needed; the service was excellent and the food beautifully prepared to our wishes.
We could imagine ourselves spending the whole winter there given half a chance.

Room Tip: They are all delightful and uniquely different.

If you're going to go to Jodphur, stay here. After a rattling train journey we arrived at Johphur train station to be met by the calm and smiling Phil. He guided us through the crowd of taxi drivers and swept us away on a tuk tuk through the wide city streets to the maze of alleys in the old town. The noise and bustle ended at the door of Bristows - a door which led into a beautifully restored and cared for haveli. If you go to Jodphur, stay here. You're treated like a friend. Views from the roof of the Mehrangarh Fort perched high above with the rest of Jodphur spilling down the hill. Perfectly placed to explore the old city without encountering groups of visitors been herded around before they retreat to impersonal hotels outside of the city.
Cold, filtered drinking water always available - no worries about where all the plastic bottles go; coffee and tea appearing promptly whenever asked for; spacious, clean bathrooms; delicious breakfasts prepared by Ramu in the garden with a lawn! Phil's in-depth knowledge of Jodphur is priceless - places to eat, markets to visit, customs and history. When you walk through the old town he is greeted constantly by the locals - surely a good indication of warmth, respect and acceptance. We left to explore elsewhere but then returned, grateful for the cleanliness and comfort of Bristows. No where else we visited was equal to Bristows. It's a very special place.

Enter the 'Blue city' and lose yourself in the intoxicating atmosphere of Jodhpur. Then pass
through a tiny, hidden street, away from the frenetic world outside and enter the quite oasis of Bristows. This is a beautifully restored haveli. The owners have decorated this wonderful house with huge taste ,using stunning local furniture and Indian textiles. Each room is individually decorated with most, revealing lovely views, over the lush internal garden .Look up and you'll see the eagles circling above the ancient fort of Jodhpur. Then, with the sun setting, go up to one of the many terraces with a cold beer and enjoy the end of a hot and magical day!
We enjoyed excellent service from Ramu. And Phil, our host , with his extensive local knowledge was full of good advise of things to do and see.
Our stay was magical and we will return! Maybe a house party?

Room Tip: Ask for a garden view

Bristows was the best place we stayed. Down winding lanes past cows and dogs in the heart of the old city you arrive at a gate and step inside to another world. Its a wonderfully rennovated house painstakingly taken back to its original form. Its quite open plan and only sleeps a few. . . each room is different. I and my friend each had our own little nooky bedroom with a shared lounging area and shared bathroom/wet room. All rooms overlook the tranquil green (!) garden. There are old stone carvings, arched windows, old murals on the wall. . Ramu is very attentive and Phil who is one of the owners is on hand to advise and even guide. an intimate delight.

Bristow's is in the heart of the old city, you walk down a lane and wonder where on earth you are going, find a small gate and enter this beautiful house. The house has been restored with great taste and offers every comfort. The garden in the centre is just wonderful- a great place to escape to. The owner is knows all the places to visit, whether you want to shop, eat or chill out and is very generaous with his time

Stay there in a small location with a beautiful garden surrounded by blue walls in the middle of Jodphur. With Ramu's excellent room service and all Phil's knowledge of where to go and what to do in and around Jodphur, you have a very good host! A peaceful and very friendly hotel, we had an extremely relaxed and happy 6 days!
