“Great Rajastahn experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 13, 2012

We spent a week in this old Fortress that has been refurbished into a Hotel. We had most dinners on the rooftop terrace with candles and an open fire. The varied Indian Cuisine was excellent and the gentle and soft spoken host, Praduman Singh, attended most dinners.
We also attended a brief camel safari to a nearby hillock to enjoy the sunset. It took an hour to reach the hillock where we were welcomed by the chef that was preparing dinner on a portable grill.
A nice experience with excellent food and Indian red and white wine.
You will also find an Arts & Crafts Center near the entrance to the Hotel.

A visit to Chandelao Garh offers a unique opportunity to experience Rajasthani culture and history first-hand. The garh is owned and operated by Mr. Praduman Singh, who has direct linkage to the founders of Jodphur. This heritage hotel has been beautifully renovated, yet kept its traditional mystic. It has all the modern amenities, including silent AC and comfortable beds.

The Garh is a tranquil oasis, conveniently located 40km from Jodphur. It is problem-free to visit Jodphur when you want to sightsee, yet the distance allows an unique opportunity to relax and withdraw from the crowds and the bustle of the Indian cities. The staff is amazingly friendly, the rooms are unique and beautiful, Praduman is an amazing host who goes out of his way to make guests feel welcomed and looked after in any way. Praduman is a walking encyclopedia, and a great story teller. He has incredible knowledge of the rich and fascinating past of India, as well as updated analysis and insight into current India. A sundowner drink with Praduman and a chance to 'pick his brain' is an experience you don't get at other hotels.

The food at the Garh is another amazing experience. It is varied, fresh, healthy, foreigner-suitable-spicy, and at night it is served under the stars in the most exquisite roof top dining in India.

In addition to preserving this heritage hotel and keeping history alive, Praduman is also genuinely dedicated to helping the village community of Chandelao - the surrounding village. Together with NGO Basecamp Foundation, he has fundraised to build toilets for the villagers, and also supports primary education for the local children. Right next to the Garh there is a handicraft workshop (Sunder Rang) which employs 18 local women. These women make traditional fabrics and jewelry. This project empowers women by giving them an income, and it also helps sustain an important part of Rajasthani culture. A visit to the workshop is a must during your visit. Other activities include village walks (to see the women fetch water etc.), camel drives, sunset bbq's, excursions to Jodphur, massages +++

If you are in India make sure you include a couple of days at the Garh: it is a wonderful, unique and truly authentic experience, which additionally gives something back to the local community and helps preserve Indian heritage. What more could you ask for?

Room Tip: All the rooms are beautiful and unique. The AC makes the Garh suitable even in the hot season.

This hotel is off the beaten track and we arrived in the early evening so it was dark when we got there. We were a little dismayed with our rooms at first having previously stayed in some first class modern hotels with excellent facilities, but we soon warmed to the charm and uniqueness of the place.

It is very laid back and relaxing. The food was excellent and tasted like home cooking. Very tasty and the owner also took his food with the guests.

It was festival time and after dinner we wandered down to the local village and joined in with the stick dancing. We were not bothered or hassled by the villagers who were very friendly and welcoming.

The next morning the owner's mother showed us the small craft centre next door where local villagers are paid a small wage for making clothes, bags and other items which are then sold. These items were really reasonably priced and we were not subjected to all the sales talk and pressure that most tourists have to suffer. The names of the workers plus the price paid were meticulously recorded so that the person who made the item would receive a small percentage of the sale price to supplement her wage.

A very pleasant stay.

On our first trip to India we carefully looked at the reviews on Tripadvisor before selecting the places we stayed in and we were not disappointed by our choices.

If after visiting big, busy ‘manic’ cities with lots of tourists you want to stay in a beautiful, calm place, then Chandelao Garh (which is a converted village fort) is the place for you.

Chandelao is a rural village Chandelao located about 37 km east of Jodhpur, 3 km south of the main road from Jodhpur to Ajmer and Jaipur although because of the roads the journey from Jodhpur does take at least an hour.

Mr Praduman Singh, the owner, a descendant of the Thakurs who owned the Chandelao Garh and its surroundings, started a project in 1996 to renovate and restore his old family home (which was the village fort) and he has done a superb job.

You enter the hotel grounds through the magnificent stone archway and all the guest rooms are in the former stables around the outer walls. They are all very spacious and comfortable. We stayed in Room 18 which was lovely, with air conditioning and a set of curtains which sectioned off the sleeping part of the bedroom which kept it really cool. The main part of the bedroom had a separate roof fan and there was a lovely large bathroom.

Food – breakfast and lunch are in an inside courtyard but dinner is on the open air rooftop terrace just above the main gate. Lunch and dinner are generally buffets but the food, which is excellent is fresh, "home cooked" not like the buffets provided in larger hotels. The range of dishes was also good. Praduman is on hand to ensure that all is well and he regularly joins visitors at mealtimes.

All the staff come from the village and they are very friendly and helpful.

What to do - Chandelao is an unspoiled village of around 1,700 people. While you stay at the fort Praduman will organise interesting trips such as a jeep safari around the nearby Bishnoi villages. The Bishnoi people, have for centuries have protected the animals and plants of the region. We saw some of the majestic nilgai – the largest of Asian antelopes and also visited a traditional Bishnoi homestead for a first-hand glimpse of their traditions and customs although we would recommend that you do not drink the water and opium drink which we were offered as they use the local well water which might upset you.

You can also visit to the nearby town of Pipar (we took the local 50 minute bus which was a real experience) or you can just walk round the village. The highlight for us was Praduman’s suggestion that we get up early and go down to the nearby well to see the village children going to fetch water for their families.

Praduman is very warm and genuine and really wants to try to make the lives of the villagers better. He is working with a Norwegian charity to help a craft centre so that local women can sell the goods they make as well as trying to set up a computer centre in the village for the local children

At Chandelao the impression you get is that you are first of all guests and then customers. It is a great place to relax and experience rural India.

I stayed here for two nights in September 2012. It was a really nice break from the chaos of Indian cities. I really appreciated Pradhuman's hospitality. He really made me feel welcome. The food was fantastic as was the value.

I highly suggest a brief respite at Chandelao Garh for any travelers tired of the noisy streets of India or being hassled to buy junk they don't want.

I can only partially agree with the other reviews given for Chandelao Garh. We have stayed two nights in Chandelao. The estate is impressive and it's certainly a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of the pulsating Indian cities. It was already stated that Chandelao is around 40 kms from Jodhpur and I just want to add for all those who are not so familiar with the Indian traffic and road conditions, that this equals to 45-60 mins drive. Please also try to arrive during daytime, we arrived in the dark and even for our experienced driver it was hard to find.
Having said all that, this was known to us before we decided for Chandelao Garh.

The reason for saying it could be managed better is a different one. Especially the bathrooms could be maintained better and could be kept cleaner. In our case we had a thin layer of black fungus spread over the bathroom tiles and the toilet was not 100% clean. The water jet in the shower was also not really good and the towels were pretty old.
Also, our room was not cleaned from one day to the next, which I can say from the fact that a rather big insect, that I had killed on the first evening was lying there until we left.

While I accept that you have to compromise a bit on the countryside, I believe the above could be easily fixed.

Additionally I have to say that unfortunately the food was also not really impressive. We had much much better food elsewhere during our India trip.

The main reason for the 2-star rating however is the indiscreetness of the so called "manager" of the place. I don't want to go into detail but the questions, that he asked my fiancé, are none of his business and very unprofessional.

Maybe we were just there at the wrong time and a bit unfortunate. The estate as such is very nice, it has a lot of antique furniture. If you are there, don't miss a stroll through the small village of Chandelao.

I have read the many positive reviews about this place, this was the primary reason for our staying their for 2 nights at the end of our 4 week Rajasthan trip. Let me confirm all the positive things are true. I don't need to reendorse the facilities, the rooms or the location, but I would like to comment about the service. Things were pretty quiet when we were there, early monsoon, and unfortunately we didn't get to experience the rooftop dinners, or buffet dinners. What we did get was meals prepared by Sajjan, (please let me have spelt that correctly), who is Pradumans mum, and the company of both when we were dining. Again I endorse the many positive things said about the willingness to embrace the tourist as part of the home, but I have to say that we have been to India a number of times now to many different regions and never, repeat never, have we had better food. Sajjan told us that it was her mother in law her that taught her all those years ago and she must have had the magic touch. Make the journey from Jodhpur for the food alone.
