“WOW!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 25, 2013

We stayed at Killa Bhawan in December 2012 and cannot say enough to recommend this place. It is like staying in a set of the Arabian Knights and was a really magical experience. Our room ( Number 10) was amazing and full of indian artifacts with a view to die for. The double doors opened up onto a small balconette covered in scatter cushions that you clambered onto flopped down with a large glass of wine and were just mesmerised by the view. The hotel is a boutique style hotel in the walls of the old fort and so sits very high above the rest of Jaisalmer. There are lots of public spaces that are also magical, roof top terraces, hip cushion clad day beds and most special of all, just lots of open views to the best vistas I have personally ever experienced. The hotel staff were really friendly and funny - thanks Manu for keeping us entertained and showing us your press cuttings. The hotel does not have a restaurant or bar, but the staff will happily get a bottle of wine for you and serve it on your terrace and there is a fab cheap and cheerful veggie restaurant called 'Sureya' up the road (also with great views) where we had one of the best veg Thalis we have ever had. If you want a guide in Jaisalmer, we would highly recommend Prakash (ask Manu to sort out) - he was lovely and made our stay really special. - Jaisalmer is one of the world's gems and I missed it when I went to India last time and so glad that we made it there this time.

We really enjoyed staying at this beautifully designed hotel. Our room was elegant and comfortable. We loved having breakfast on the fabulous rooftop terrace and thought the service was excellent. It's perfectly located in the fort and we'd definitely recommend staying here if you can afford it.

This is a botique hotel.

Our room was small but beautiful.
It was excellently located in one of the 99 balustrades of the fort, with very good views.
The breakfast was large, though restricted, and there was free bottled water.
Staff were very friendly.

However, this hotel was four times more expensive than equivalents in other Rajasthan cities, eg Bundi, Jaipur, and up to three times more expensive than equivalents in Jaisalmer.
Furthermore, there was maintenance work ongoing during our stay which meant noise, smell (varnishing) and some areas being inaccessible (roof terrace being used to dry varnished items).

Despite its strengths this was not worth the cost.
Perhaps good as a treat (assuming maintenance has finished)

A wonderful setting within the Jaisalmer Fort. Our room was small but beautifully decorated and had an extra area in it where our children were able to have a bed. I presume this would usually have other furniture for people without kids. Outside our room was a communal terrace overlooking part of the fort and city where we were able to sit in the sun and have breakfast. There was no menu and we were encouraged to order whatever we wanted. We did and it came! There was even freshly squeezed fruit juice, something I've rarely seen in Indian hotels.
As it was December it was very cold. We were provided with extra blankets and a fan heater. The heater was totally useless which was disappointing when everything else was so carefully thought of. We were warm enough to sleep although the beds and pillows were hard and not very comfortable.
The only other grip was the shower, but this often seems to be a problem in smaller hotels. There was no water pressure so what little warm water there was mostly ran down the wall before it went cold. In the summer it really wouldn't matter but at this time of year it makes washing a pretty miserable experience.
Overall we loved the hotel though and wished we could have stayed another night.

This is THE place to stay in Jaisalmeer. My family stayed in two of the larger rooms off a courtyard behind the reception area for two nights in Dec 2012. The haveli is located in a corner of the Jaisalmeer Fort--as you come in the last fort gate, turn left and walk along the lane to the end. The haveli's multiple terraces provide excellent views on the rest of the fort and the city---a wonderful place to have breakfast (included) or lounge in the evenings. There are also several sitting rooms that are available for guests to use throughout the day----in nooks at different levels of the haveli. The hotel is actually a combination of several havelis--- with connections and winding hallways --- done in a beautiful, authenthic and stylish manner. Our rooms were nicely appointed with comfy beds, nice bathrooms, and decent amount of space(considering it's an old haveli). Manu, Manish, and their team made us feel incredibly welcome with helpful advice on getting around the fort and town, interesting perspective on the fort's history and preservation, and overall enjoyable discussions on wide-ranging topics. The hotel also organized a night camping in the desert about an hour outside Jaisalmeer in the dunes (not Sam or others that are crowded with tourists). Camping was a reasonable price for the package--- good driver (but old jeep) who took good care of us and showed us the sights in the area and then handed us over to young men who guided us on camels to the campsite in the dunes. Sunset from atop a camel in the dunes is hard to beat! At the campsite, the hote arranged clean, nice tents with plenty of blankets, warm campfire + young(but good and entertaining) musicians in the evening, and good, honest dinner food from their nearby permanent tented camp 1 km away. We had a quick and warm breakfast the next morning and then drove back to Jaisalmeer arriving mid-morning. From Lonely Planet's horror stories of camping in the dunes with the multiple touts, we were a bit worried when making these arrangements, but Hotel Killa Bhawan organized an excellent dune experience for us. Prices were about $140/night for a double room, with desert tour/camel/camping at $90/person--- worth it for the service, quality, and experience. All around, this is an amazing experience and definitely the best we saw of all the hotels/havelis in Jaisalmeer. Highly recommended!

My husband and I stayed for 3 nights at the killa, and just as they say when you arrive, they make you feel very at home.
We took one of the top floor deluxe rooms, with immediate access to the rooftop terraces where we had our breakfast nearly every morning.
The hotel is very well located, and you can walk to all touristic and interesting places. Even tough it doesn't have a restaurant in house, it's located near a ton of good places to eat.
You can have tea anytime and sit back in their terraces, or even have some tea with the managers who are very friendly, can answer any doubts and plan from a camel safari to a party for you.
Stay in a deluxe room if you can, it is definitely worth the money just for the views.

My friend and I stayed for two nights in the Hotel Killa Bhawan while touring Rajasthan with Four Wheel Drive India. We had stayed in some fantastic hotels during our tour and this one ranked right up with the best of them. The hotel itself is tucked away in a quiet corner yet steps from the shops and streets of the fort. The whole hotel was beautifully decorated and the view from the large terraces surely must be one of the best in all India. The manager and staff were extremely friendly and nothing was too much trouble. We could order whatever we wanted for breakfast and it was served to us on the terrace. We also ordered dinner on the terrace one evening and a delicious vegetarian meal was brought to us from a nearby restaurant, still piping hot. The full moon and an ice cold beer completed the evening. We wish we had had longer there as our stay was indeed a highlight of our holiday. We highly recommend this hotel and would definitely go back.
