From the roof of the Patwa Haveli my tour guide pointed to the rooftop across the street. "That is the KB Café. They have the best Thali in Rajasthan." For the uninitiated imagine Indian tapas. A large circular tray is brought to the table containing many small delicious tidbits. My guide continued, "So good that you will forget "Gypsy" in Jodhpur. "A bold statement," I cautioned. A few minutes later the owner of KB Café is explaining to me that he serves the best Thali in Rajasthan. I whet my appetite with a tall cold Kingfisher and then dug in. The Rajasthani desert beans were delicious and since KB Café spices their food for European tourist palates with the absence of chili peppers I could actually discern the subtleties in this elegant dish. The curry dal was thinner than that which I have previously encountered but light and flavorful. The mixed vegetables were crisp and tender simultaneously and a little salty for me but it's 100 degrees so it's best to take precautions and sodium up. Gypsie scored with including gulab jamun as a desert while KB Café serves a Rajasthani cold pudding. So Gypsy is putting forward the equivalent of chocolate against the KB Café equivalent of anything other than chocolate. But on the balance of the points and considering the great view of Jaisalmer fortress and balcony love seats with plush cushions KB Café wins. With the beer and banana lassi the meal was only 800 rupees. The location is convenient just a few minutes walk from the fort and right across the street from the Patwa Haveli.
