The Chandan Shree is a very inexpensive, basic restaurant which is definitely popular among the locals although a number of foreigners do eat there. I agree with the reviewer who said it had little ambience, it England it would probably be classified as a 'Greasy Spoon' type place with formica table tops but we thought it would be interesting to try somewhere which was not targeted at the tourist market.
They specialise in local Thali vegetarian meals made up of a selection of various dishes served on a steel tray with multiple compartments, which get topped up as you finished,. Our thali included rice, dal, vegetables, roti, curd (yoghurt), small amounts of chutney or pickle. The service was quick and they kept coming round with more food.
Our meal was OK nothing bad and nothing too special just average. Although it was pretty cheap INR 100 per person, would we go back there probably not as I am not a vegetarian but for us it was an interesting experience to eat where the locals eat. You need to try these things rather than stay cocooned in restaurants which just cater for tourists.
