I was quite disappointed when I found that I had been booked at Empire Hotel, instead of another hotel that I had asked for. I had been told that Empire was an old hotel and was somewhat apprehensive as the car drove into the hotel portico.
Rather large lobby . . . hmmm. . . not bad. Check in was smooth. The concierge took me to my room on the 2nd floor. Rather smallish room overstuffed with a sofa that was too large for the room, a work table with no chair but a low stool. The concierge kept my luggage on a rack that was too small for my suitcase and I had to keep it on the low coffee table. As soon as the concierge left, I with some amount of anxiety, expecting more disappointment, set about checking out the room. Surprisingly clean, white, and crisp bed linen. Delightfully clean towels in the bath room. I began to breathe easier.
Went down for dinner. Sumptuous and rather exotic buffet spread, with smiling and friendly restaurant staff hovering around unobtrusively to serve.
Breakfast next morning was equally good with adequate variety, and once again very friendly and sincere service.
Check out was smooth and professional and I left with a good feeling. The overall experience more than made up for the door that did not close properly (a couple or a lady occupying the room would have found it very uncomfortable I am sure) and a toilet seat that was ridiculously small in relation to the commode, and hence very uncomfortable.)
The people are good, the attitude of hospitality very visible. Some more attention to detail and better maintenance would make this hotel a truly comfortable traveller's destination.
