Who would imagine that right in the middle of Chakan’s manufacturing and auto hub exists an oasis of luxury and true-blue hospitality. A brand new Marriott Group hotel with beautifully appointed grand and luxurious rooms, 24 hour coffee shop, deli, fitness centre, swimming pool and the works! That too, a short 10 minute drive from the Mumbai Pune expressway at the Talegaon bypass.
Whether you are en-route to Pune, Aurangabad, Shirdi, Nasik, or in Talegaon, Chakan, Lonavala, the Courtyard Marriott Chakan is a must visit.
Imagine breaking journey for a short break or stay ensconced in the a beautiful, open, grand hotel with high ceiling, huge glass façade, fantastic lighting, surrounded by serene hills, trees and greenery. Pure bliss!
Right from breaking journey here to pick up delicious sandwiches, burgers, rolls, muffins, cup-cakes etc. from the Momo 2 Go deli to enjoying the 5 star luxurious buffet or the a la carte menu at Café Momo the 24 hour coffee shop, it is a delightful experience.
The best part is that people in a rush to reach Pune or other destinations can call in advance and order from the Momo 2 Go deli to find piping hot food ready for pickup on reaching the Courtyard Marriott Chakan. Sure beats stopping on the Expressway for a loo break and snacks.
And in case you are like us - who wanted a central location to stay while visiting, Pune, Lonavala, Lavasa, Hinjewadi, Pimpri, Chakan, Talegaon, the Courtyard Marriott Chakan is the place to visit.
Around 14 kms from the Mumbai Pune Expressway, 35 kms from Pune railway station, and 20 kms from Hinjewadi and Pimpri, nestled right in the middle of the lush green mountains and hills surrounding Chakan, cleverly designed to be close and still distant from the busy auto factories, this gem of a hotel is the oasis of Chakan.
Driving up to the hotel, easily visible from a distance, one enters a huge, high ceilinged lobby, cheerfully lit by the sunlight streaming in through the high glass panels. Soothingly cool and luxuriously comfortable, one is briskly checked in while sipping their signature refreshing tangy welcome drink.
With around 175 deluxe and suite rooms spread over the hotel, we were allotted rooms facing the swimming pool. The lobby leading the rooms had plush carpeting and the brand new rooms were surprisingly large and tastefully designed.
We had rooms with king size beds and spanking new trappings which included a large LED television, Ipod docking station, modern tea coffee maker, a well stocked mini bar, excellent wi-fi connectivity and a wonderful ironing board (which incidentally opened real smoothly, unlike the ones in some 5 star hotels which are difficult to open and hurt your fingers while trying to open them). The new steam iron provided was smooth and a amazing help for us all throughout our stay.
The air conditioning was perfect with a simple panel to change the temperature based on ones liking. The service staff were helpful enough show us around the room, its facilities, electronic safe (large enough to accommodate a laptop), all popular Hindi and English international channels - featuring all the popular soaps - something which the wives were very happy about!
The large bathroom is neatly divided into 3 sections – with an amazing rain shower, a huge wash basin cum changing room and the modern toilet which we were pleasantly surprised to discover had a jet spray which is mostly absent in most 5 star hotels bathrooms in India.
The toiletries available were basic – shampoo, soap, conditioner, hair dryer - with other amenities like shower cap, toothpaste etc. being available on call from the housekeeping team. The napkins, towels and bathrobes are soft, fluffy, whiter than white and amazing to use.
A huge king size bed opposite the big LED television on the wall and a mirror panel extending on the wall from the television set gives the room a much more spacious appearance. Towards the end of the room there is a sofa placed close to the huge windows facing the swimming pool. The beds were very comfortable, very international, with nice, super-soft pillows to compliment them.
Only thing, the power cuts in the area on certain days of the week was something which did cause the air conditioning to switch off for a very short time till as such time the power back-up genset was switched on once again.
One sees quite a few expats and foreigners at the bar, coffee shop and as in-house guests. Guess this is to do with the international auto industry players in the neighbourhood.
Another nice thing about the Courtyard Marriott is the amazingly friendly staff. Right from Upender who checked us in, escorted us to our room and patiently explain all in-room and hotel facilities to the Sous Chefs Prakash Khetwal and Pastry Chef Jitender Upadhaya who man the Momo Café and Momo 2 Go Deli. With delicacies like cookies, freshly baked bread, choco chip muffins and a huge variety of Indian and international dishes – different at every buffet is no mean task and they achieve the same with aplomb.
The super sophisticated General Manager – Ms. Ritu Chawla added to the amazing experience with her personal touch by actively supervising arrangements and checking with guests if they are comfortable and enjoying their stay and cuisine. We had an opportunity to have a short chat with her when she met us in the coffee shop and wanted to know our feedback about the hotel and its facilites.
We learnt about Ms. Chawla’s laudable stint at the Taj Group of Hotels and her plans for the Courtyard Marriott Chakan. She was refreshingly different from some of the senior management in the hospitality industry. Open to feedback, suggestions and helpful with information on the hotel and places to visit around Chakan and Pune.
She was as comfortable discussing the Diwali festival with the women in our group, impressing kids with suggestions on the kiddie menu. Truly remarkable and personalized interaction – something we have not come across very often while staying at hotels around the world.
Coming to the food – which we had enough time to experience over the few days we were staying at the Courtyard Marriott Chakan – it is fantastic, authentic in flavours and international with the continental, Italian and world cuisine.
The buffet breakfast and lunch is enormous with tables laden with food, food and more food! Fresh salads, delicious dessert counters, live counters for South Indian food, pastas, local flavours added to the a la carte menu - try their Kolhapuri chicken pizza – bursting with authentic local spices and flavours. Amazingly, unique combination!
The sandwiches – club, toasted, veg, chicken and cheese, pasta for kids with red and white sauce, roast chicken with mashed potatoes and fresh garden vegetables is a delight and pure satisfaction after a 3 hour drive from Mumbai.
In hindsight, the wisest thing we did on our trip was not to stop at the usual stops on the Mumbai Pune Expressway at Lonavala and Panvel. and headed straight for the Courtyard Marriott Chakan to enjoy the delicious sandwiches, burgers and pasta in a refreshing atmosphere.
The Director Food & Beverage – Mohammed Khan and Chef Girish Kumar TV are the stars behind the menu and wonderful creations being served at the restaurants in Courtyard Marriott, Chakan. They were hand’s on, dedicated, attentive and available in the restaurant at most times inquiring with guests about the cuisine quality, flavours and more… With a fantastic background of having worked in top 5 star hotels, Mohammed Khan and Girish Kumar seemed to be at their creative and attentive best with the menu, starters being served, bar arrangements and supervising the extensive buffet.
Our office conference on the next few days was held in 2 of the 4 large conference rooms – impressively and tastefully done up, with the latest gadgets, audio and video connectivity and tools required for conferences. The banquet hall for the night party was huge, well lit, with lots of space between tables providing the much required privacy.
Another plus point was the 3 outdoor dining areas – which served grills and tandoori food. The cool, slightly chilly evenings, fresh air from the mountains, and open dining options – first one outside the restaurant towards the front of the hotel, the second one besides the big pool and 24 hour Fitness centre, and the third small one on the top floor next to the Executive Lounge with open air tables, umbrellas and the works was amazingly refreshing.
The 24 hour Fitness Centre located on the pool level was top of the line with latest international exercise machines – for cardio as well as strength/ weight training. According to us, one of the biggest unique propositions was the HDFC Bank ATM outlet located at the lobby level adjacent to the conference room facilities.
Most of us the guests who we met during the conference dinner were quite impressed with this brand new property right Chakan. And why not…The Courtyard Marriott truly does deserve the acclaim and accolades for being the top notch hotel of Pune.
Try to get the pool facing rooms on a lower floor - they are very nice with a great view of the pool...
