“Good for kids”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 21, 2013 via mobile

Nice place for kids. Pool was excellent. Easy access to beach, which was great, and shops/restaurants. Staff were very helpful. When a bulb was out, the staff came in 5 min. When the TV didn't work, staff came quickly to fix. Agree with other reviews about the cleaning. No info was provided that you need to leave key but figured it out after day one. Called them and they came to clean right away, however they should give info upfront. Food by the pool was easy and good.

My friend and I stayed here recently at the end of a two week exploration of Kerala. This hotel was supposed to be the more luxurious part of our trip, costing £65 per night for room only, and we chose it after reading so many excellent reviews on Tripadvisor. However,it turned out to be possibly the most disappointing hotel we have ever stayed in and it failed to live up to even our most basic expectations spectacularly for several reasons.

Firstly there was no water provided in the room for teeth cleaning etc. When we queried this we were told to go and buy it from the shop. Obviously bottled water is very cheap in India but this was the only hotel we stayed at where it was not provided and in many years of travelling I can't remember the last time I stayed somewhere that didn't provide complimentary water. It may sound like a trivial issue to complain about but it was symbolic of the lack of attention to customer care that permeated this hotel. Even the £9 b and b we stayed in next to Trivandrum airport provided it. Similarly there were no glasses in the room, so presumably we were expected to buy them too.Other items not provided which we would have expected for the price we were paying included tea or coffee making facilities, a safe, a fridge/minibar, hanging space and hand towels. In fact all the room did include was a bed (double not the twin we requested), tv, a couple chairs, coffee table, 1 bedside cabinet and an aircon unit.

As well as lacking basic items the servicing of room was minimal. Shortly after arriving I spilled some water on the floor and when I mopped it up the dirt that came up with it made it clear that cleaning floors was not a high priority. When nobody had been near our room to change towels, or even empty an ashtray full of fruit peel on the patio, for four days we went to reception to request an explanation only to be told that to get your room cleaned you had to go to reception and leave your key with them. Again I have never stayed in a hotel that charges such a high rate in comparison to other establishments in the area that doesn't change towels at least every other day. My usual problem is preventing towels being changed daily when I would rather prolong it a little..

In more general terms customer service was yet again very poor. My friend and I are not difficult to please and we are certainly not people who look for things to moan about but when we did raise the above issues with reception we were either smirked at or dismissed with a shrug and a comment such as go and buy water from the shops. We were not told about the system for cleaning on arrival, presumably a strategy to save money as it will take most people a few days to go and complain, and the information in the room consisted of a laundry price list and menu for the restaurant. To put it simply we felt like human shaped cash machines. There was even an attempt to charge us an additional 3% credit card fee when we paid, which to be fair was waived.

Faced with all of the above we were rather mystified about how there are so many good reviews for somewhere that fails in some pretty basic areas and it would appear that if you opt for a basic room without aircon you can get more or less what we got for about £20 per night. If we had paid that we would have been reasonably satisfied. The pool area is pleasantly located in gardens and the location is fairly close to the cliff but you can do much, much better for a lot less elsewhere in Varkala.

Room Tip: If you do decide to stay here at least avoid the cottages with aircon as they are very over priced.

We, at Akhil Beach Resort constantly strive to provide the best of service for all our customers through out the year and we leave no stones unturned for the same.
It is unfortunate that one of our customers were not happy during their period of stay and We know that it is nothing but a case of misunderstanding.
It is true that we don't provide complimentary water in the rooms but we very well cater drinking water in Jugs or bottles if demanded by our guest for no additional cost.
Regarding the remark from the reception it is a case of miscommunication. In our service of over 16 years in this field, never have we treated a guest in such a fashion. We believe its easy to earn money but takes years of hard work to earn the reputation and name that we enjoy today and we would never risk the same.
We have been constantly making sure that all our guests get value for their money and we have been successful in maintaining what we promise, as evident from the reviews posted by our valuable guests.

I stayed one week to check out the service and amenities before I conducted a week long yoga retreat, and then returned with 7 other people for the retreat itself during mid-March. Akhil was outstanding both times.

The participants for my retreat absolutely loved Akhil. They loved the food, their accommodations (all cottages), and especially the pool. The asst. manager Shaji and the restaurant manager were all very accommodating with any requests. I arranged a special welcome dinner for my people with the restaurant manager before my retreat started and everyone said the food was plentiful and excellent. I want to give a special shout out to Nithin, one of the young men who worked at the front desk, for his help with everything during my retreat -- he arranged a backwaters trip for my people that everyone loved.

When my group got to Akhil, some people wanted to upgrade their cottages and all requests were handled professionally AND all were given discounts. You can't beat that!

Akhil is very close to the beach, about a 5 minute walk. Akhil also has an ayurvedic center that is excellent. I received good service.

I would absolutely stay here again, but more importantly, conduct another yoga retreat here without hesitation.

Room Tip: get a pool view cottage...the garden view cottages are too close to the main entrance and rather sma...

The hotel was clean and well maintained. The rooms were a decent size and we had the upper floor with balcony overlooking the pool. This was a nice place to sit and relax with a cold beer in the late afternoon / early evening. The grounds were very nice and well looked after. The pool was clean and very inviting (over 100F when we were there!). The location is close to the cliff, you do have to walk down a rough track to get there but it's only 200m or so. The staff were helpful and attentive. We ordered food by the pool one day and it was very nice (if you fancy a change from curry etc try their burgers). We would stay again.

Room Tip: If you are getting a non A/C ask for the upper floor overlooking the pool.

There are, it has to be said, issues with Akhil Beach Resort. Service was charming but perfunctory, not to mention slow. The room we were given was spotlessly clean, beautifully air conditioned, and lacked anywhere to stow one's clothes, or a glass to drink one's water. The food, when one got it, was reasonable, the cocktails excellent, and the wi-fi erratic at best. The hotel couldn't be blamed for the power outages, but they might have beefed up the service. All that said, it is an elegantly laid-out hotel, with particularly attractive rooms set within a forest of palm trees and flowering bushes. Its large swimming pool, by far the best in Varkala I heard said, made a visit to the beach unnecessary (53 steps down, and, what is worse, up again), but it would have been a pity to miss it. On the cliff top, reached from the hotel through a building site then either the Tibetan Market or the Tibetan restaurant, there are shops aplenty and some excellent palaces to eat - try Calfouti or the Trattoria. Unless the taxi or tuk-tuk driver knows the way, however, Akhil resort is difficult to find. I suggest they put a map on their website - and a rather more intelligible map than they hand out at reception. With a little work this could be an outstanding, child-friendly holiday resort.

Would really recommend staying here. The pool is amazing and the grounds surrounding it and the rooms are beautiful. Room was very nice and it is very close to the beach and the bars on the cliffs. Staff were not so helpful sometimes.

We stayed 2 adults and 2 kids in a garden view bungalow in which we could easily fit 2 extra beds. The kids loved the pool where they spent most of the day. The beach was a 5 minute walk away - and you could either walk down a narrow alley or through a construction site (both places filled with garbage). The beach was nice, wide and pretty clean. There were several great restaurants and it was all very quiet and laid back.
