“Peaceful beautiful little hideaway”

The cleanest accom that I stayed in in India. Debra the owner goes the extrA in making sure her guests feel welcome and enjoy their stay. She absolutely goes above and beyond and as a solo female traveller it was so nice to have the staff taking care of you, giving you advice and creating a warm environment. The roof top is awesome, I loved sitting up there every morning in the peace and quiet and have a delicious healthy breakfast delivered. It's also a great place to meet other travellers if you felt like some company. This was the perfect end to my holiday.

I stayed at Kaiya House in March with 3 friends while travelling in Kerala and Goa. As a B&B owner myself I know how hard it is to cater for all tastes and requirements but Debra certainly succeeds. The rooms and bathrooms were comfortable, tastefully and individually decorated and, most importantly, spotless, The breakfasts were served on the lovely roof terrace and perfectly prepared by Debra's staff - there was always fresh fruit and a choice of goodies and drinks.
However it is Debra's attention to detail and her enthusiasm for Southern India that make all the difference. Her advice on how to make the best use of your time in Varkala in particular and Kerala in general, is invaluable. She talked us through places to eat, shop and see and accompanied us on an orientation walk. Best of all, she invited us to join her on her early morning walk along the beach (about 6/7km ) which was a unique opportunity to see the townspeople waking up and going about their business and to see (and help!) the fisherman haul their catch in.
Debra also arranged airport pickup and on going travel and gave us her input on enjoying Alleppey and Cochin. We loved Varkala and we loved Kaiya House with its genuine welcome and its fascinating decor and I hope to return and spend more time in this lovely lady's company. I have included some photos below and you can see from our smiles how happy we were with our choice of homestay.

Having never visited India before we read plenty reviews of different places all over Kerala and Varkala. In the end, we settled for Kaiya House as our number one choice, and it turned out to be a very good one!

Debra was very kind and showed us 'the ropes' as far as tourism goes. She explained lots of "do's and dont's" and gave us a quick tour of the neighboring area, which we were very grateful for. She also helped us get a taxi from the airport the day we arrived, and even called us (via the taxi driver) to make sure we had landed and everything was all right.

It's really corny, but Debra and her staff made our stay feel like we were at our home away from home. The hospitality is nothing but outstanding. The place (general area, kitchen, room, bathrooms, etc.) is very neat and clean, breakfast is very good and it all have a very homely feel to it. A couple of late evenings were spent on the terrace and those moments were as close to magical as they could be.

Oh, if you get to join her on a morning walk, my SO and I can warmly recommend it. She'll be showing you a very beautiful side of India we otherwise would not have seen .

Ooooo, I have such a difficult relationship with technology. I think I just deleted my entire iPod and replied to the wrong review! Opps! But I'd do want to thank you for your kind words and taking the time to write them! Who knows, perhaps we'll meet in Sweden one day! Enjoy!

Really nice people who take care of you. Good service, good food and nice rooms. Varkala beach is like Goa in Kerala. Beautiful beach and nice restaurants and shops. (Tibetan shops were especially great) We really enjoyed the experience.

We can agree with the previous reviews that Debra is one of the most conscientious and hardworking hosts we have had. She went out of her way to be helpful, and is willing to try to solve any problems that might come up. The seven km morning walk was really fun and good exercise. She was very helpful in arranging train tickets. The house itself is very comfortable, and the covered roof is a good place to eat a very tasty breakfast, relax, and chat with other travelers. We stayed in the "African Room" as it has windows on two sides and a lot of light. The beach is a little distant from the house, but easily walkable. We definitely recommend staying at Kaiya House, and would certainly welcome the opportunity to stay there again.

Room Tip: A back room (such as the Africa Room) is quiet, but there is not much traffic on the street so noise...

We stayed here for 2 nights and Debra and her staff could not have done more for us or made us more welcome. Our room was spacious and spotless and breakfast on the top terrace was very pleasant. The beautifully decorated house is in a quiet street but within walking distance of the beach and the cliff. However if you want a rickshaw Debra will have one at your disposal in no time at all and can arrange an airport pick up should you wish one. A great find and great personal service.

Thank you so much. You had such a great sense of humour and adventure with your arrival in a full on power cut! The only sadness is you couldn't stay a few more days. All the best!

We, a family of two adults and one teenage child, stayed at Kaiya House for 3 nights, and, thanks largely to our host Debra, had a wonderful and memorable time.
We stayed in two rooms- one air-conditioned, and one non air-conditioned, and both were spacious, comfortable and even the non AC was not too hot. The rooms were decorated interestingly with cultural themes from around the world.
Soon after our arrival at the colourfully-decorated Kaiya House, our host Debra informed us that there would be a Hindu temple festival on in a near-by village, and arranged for us to get there and see it. We are very thankful that we did get to go and have this unique experience, and confident that if we hadn't been staying with such a warm host who was prepared to go above and beyond to enrich the stay of her guests, we would have missed out on one of the best afternoons of our trip in South India. Another example of our host's dedication was when, on our arrival, she showed our family about Varkala, pointing out good places to eat and locally-run shops, to orient us and ensure we had a good stay.
Breakfast was tasty and fresh every morning and hot drinks were always available to us during our stay.
We even got to go on an early beach walk through fishing villages one morning, once again due to the hospitality of our host.
Debra was also an invaluable source when we had questions about whether it would be appropriate to go swimming at the local beaches, and how much to pay auto rickshaw drivers.
Overall, we feel that we were able to get the most out of our time spent in Varkala staying at Kaiya House with such a warm, friendly and helpful host, because it offered us more than the average tourist experience in Kerala.

We strongly recommend this excellent home stay.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back of the house away from the street are quieter.
