“Fabulous place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 5, 2009

This is an exceptional place. it is based on traditional village house designs - that are naturally cool and beautiful. The staff are helpful and relaxed and Susan, who runs it, is putting a great vision into action.

After a fairly horrid train journey (should have booked 1st class!) we arrived in Varkala and randomly picked The Bohemian Masala for a couple of nights. We ended up staying 2 weeks!.

The owner, Susan, and her staff made us feel very welcome without being intrusive. I think the owner spent some years living in Europe so they have a feel for Western expectations of cleanliness and comfort. However, it is their spiritual approach to hospitality that made our stay so special. We also liked their environmental awareness, using local materials, rain water harvesting and recycling - which made us feel better about the carbon footprint of our flights to India...

The food, also using local ingridients and traditions, was some of the best we experienced - none of that oily psuedo-indian stuff we had in some places.

  • Liked — Good honest value for money
  • Disliked — Could have done with another coat hanger
