“A lovely place, great location at the mouth of a river”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 14, 2010

The service is very personal: you get your personal attendant, which is nice. The food was lovely and there is a nice pool, somewhat smallish, but adquate. It is a pity though that the place is now surrounded by fences and buildings all around, it must have been gorgeous when it was still "in the wild". Still the place is quiet, the rooms well equipped, the atmosphere relaxed.

We stayed here at the start of our first trip to India with the idea of chilling for a few days with a bit of luxury to adjust to the pace of life and get over our jet lag. Regrettably it didn't live up to our expectations and we left after one night.

On the plus side even after spending the next three weeks in India we didn't taste food better than what we had at Lagoona Davina. It was simple yet amazingly tastey and healthy. Our experience with the staff was excellent - they even brought some items to us we had left in the room when we returned to Trivandrum.

On the downside the room felt quite oppressive. Where we expected to see rustic or bohemian charm there was really just neglect. The bed sheet had stains on it and felt sweaty. I know it is sold as an eco-retreat, and it must be difficult to maintain a high level, especially directly after a heavy monsoon - but I think the place could with a healthy dose of TLC.

Maybe it was premature leaving so early but we both felt that we stayed in places that were better value for money and for the price expected a little bit more from Lagoona Davina.

I stayed here with a friend at the end of a month backpacking around India. We wanted a nice relaxing end to our trip and that is just what we got. Davina and one of her staff met us at the airport and we travelled by boat to the hotel, a wonderful touch! You can get there easily by car or rickshaw as it's just off the main road to Kovolum so they take your bags that way and you get to see some of the beautiful backwaters on the way. The rooms are cosy and full of fantastic little touches like silk dressing gowns and four poster beds. There is no A/C but that doesn't matter too much as there's a fan and Davina wants to be a eco friendly as possible. Very sadly, the government of Kerela have dumped rubbish from the city onto the once beautiful beach opposite the hotel. Despite years of protest and campaigns from Davina the rubbish remains. She showed us before and after pictures and it was heartbreaking. However, she doesn't advertise as a beach holiday and although you can't swim you can watch the locals playing, fishing and swimming, and after all this is India: cleanliness doesn't come along often! The staff are fantastic and they and Davina look after you so well. The food was good and we were looked after really well. Davina herself is very attentive, ensuring our every need was catered for. A lovely woman! If you like animals your in for a treat as Davina keeps ducks for fresh eggs and the most adorable pet cat and dog.

Some of the reviews on here are totally unfair and unrealistic. When you travel to India you are never going to have complete luxury unless you lock yourself away in some resort where you could be in Spain. If you want a five star, boring hotel with no character go to the Costa Sol and stay in a chain hotel there. This place is different and unique! A true gem. We could easily have spent more time here!

Davina was impatient and rude with questions, Waited way too long for drinks and meals, Pool dirty. Beach on the other side of Lagoona was a trash dump. Overpriced for the level of accomodations and service. The best part was the sunsets.

What a place! If you're after a bit of authentic South India, but with a little more luxury and a giant dosa of charm, then try this little hideway. This is not five star luxury. There appear to be a string of rather sanitised retreats along this coast catering for those looking for all the mod-cons. Here is a place to chill, to read and to drink fine wine or cold beers in the evening. I had my own personal yoga guru for about £7 a day and awesome massages from village experts! Davina is a special host and has led an extraordinary life. We also hired mopeds to visit the beaches of Varkala and Kovalam and eventually took a £200 return flight to the Maldives for five days. Lagoona Davina is a great base from which to explore Kerala, Big thumbs up - highly recommended!!!

This places oozes genuine charm and authenticity, it rightly deserves to be in a number of hotel guides such as Alasdhair Sawdays guide to India and Hip Hotels.

We stayed here with friends for 4 days in March 2010 at the end of a trip travelling around Kerala. We enjoyed serious factor 10 chill out time here, quite fabulous, from the uniquely themed animal rooms, to the ambience and warmth of the owner and her staff team. I literally had to drag myself away!

Maybe it is because Lagoona Davina is so close to the rolling waves of the Arabian sea or maybe it is the never ending flocks of birds who swoop wide over the lagoon, or being at the centre of Village life, that makes this a very spiritual place.

If you like to stay in unique and interesting places, and not stay in hotels that frankly could be anywhere in the world - then this place really is for you.

I couldn't recommend it highly enough.

We had read the reviews and arrived with some trepidation at Davina Lagoona having booked there for three weeks. We found a wonderful place- with obvious limitations and drawbacks as anybody reading the reviews can see for themselves. But these aside it is a stunning place to stay with warm hospitality from Davina and her staff especially Jimmy, tasty healthy food, marvellous yoga master, and unbelievable sunsets. The birds, including the crows, add an atmosphere that is unique. We also spent hours watching the fishermen hauling in their nets on the beach opposite. We travelled around too but were glad to get back to Davina Lagoona. Go there before Davina leaves and this unique place is swallowed up by the 21st century.
