“Never Again!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed April 14, 2011

My husband and I stayed here for one night in 2009. On this occasion the a/c room was fairly acceptable and as the details were on my email contacts list, I fired a quick email to them for a one night stay before flying to Bangalore the next day.

Once checked in and entering the building it is obvious that this hotel is obsolete and very tired. The whole place had an aura of second rate desperation.

The room to which we were allocated was long outdated. The air conditioning system, which we paid extra for, was all but useless. An antiquated unit set into the outside wall at waist height, had gaps all around the edge which showed daylight through. At night the unit was as noisy as a jet engine so we turned it off and made do with the fan. The shelf onto which the television was sitting had been dusted only across the front, the sides and back had dust so thick I shouldn't think it had ever been touched with a duster.

Beds were not too bad, the linen which a previous reviewer mentioned to be dirty, was OK. But it was the wall to which one of the beds were pushed up against that drew our attention, the dirty marks on the paintwork looked very dubious!

The shower room left a lot to be desired. Again, very old sanitary ware. The tap needed a plumber to fix the badly dripping tap. A bucket had been put under it but we quickly took it this away because once there was a couple of inches of water in it, the dripping sounded like Chinese torture! THE BEST THING WAS THE THICK FLUFFY WHITER THAN WHITE TOWELS!

Restaurant, no complaints here. We had lunch and dinner, service and food together with prices were great. While we were dining we could see that people came in from outside to eat. It is worth mentioning that this is Kerala, and as such no alcohol licence, so only water and soft drinks with the meal. This did not detract from our overall enjoyment of the mealtime.
We were on the first floor facing the front. It was a Sunday night and immediately outside our window groups of locals were running motorbikes, reving them loudly till past midnight.

We did a recce at neighbouring hotels and saw two or three nearby, Will try them next time we pass through.

I had to spend one night in Trivandrum before leaving from the airport, so I was looking for a budget hotel convenient for the airport. I picked Regency because it was featured on Lonely Planet guide. The reality was very different from the guidebook: our room was pretty basic, which is fine, but it was very dirty. the bed linens were full of spots and definitely not washed. there were insects in the room including one big beetle walking around. I like backpacking and usually I am very flexible but this has been too much! I am sure there are better places to stay in Trivandrum than the Regency.

Its one of those places where literally its a bed, in a room with a TV. Dont be expecting anything else, but for the price it would be unfair to.
Location is great and probably the best thing about the Regency and the staff are more than willing to help out.
Rooms are clean and there are a few English speaking channels on the TV like Discovery, Star World etc.
Internet is the most expensive in India at 40 Rupees per hour on a very slow connection. Simply walk out the hotel, face right and spit. You will notice your spit has just landed on the doorstep of Yavhoo Internet city where its only 20 rupees per hour and with ninja speed broadband.
Also dont buy water from the hotel its 20 Rupees wheras the normal price at every shop is 15. In addition there is a 10% service charge. Basically the guy creams a few rupees for walking to the fridge for you.

So, stay here for a night or two, but dont use the net or get drinks and you'll be fine.

Nice and pretty clean hotel.

But!
It's 24-hours checkout in this place, so keep in mind what time you checked in..

The Regency Hotel is very well located; being in the heart of the city, and yet in a quiet lane off the main road and 20-25 minutes from the airport.

The rooms are very well maintained, comfortable and clean with all the basic facilities you'd expect from a 3 star hotel. The hotel staff is extremely courteous and helpful.

The Daavat restaurant has some amazing Kerala dishes with a good selection of other cuisines in case you're not too comfortable with Kerala food. The chef personally comes around to check whether the customers are happy with the food.

For holiday travellers, the staff will be able to help you with places to visit, things to do and the arrangements for the same (transport, ayurvedic massages etc).

The Regency Hotel is a great choice for business travellers as well as persons on holiday looking for a 3 star hotel.

This hotel was within walking distance from the station and the room was reasonably clean and comfortable. What was unforgivable was that as we were paying at reception my husband gave the woman 1000 rupees (two 500 bills) for our 750 bill but then realized that he had exact change and pulled out 250. The woman took one of the 500 bills from behind the counter and the 250 and then acted as if the transaction was finished. When my husband reminded her that he had given her two 500 bills she didn't seem to remember although he had given them to her 10 seconds prior. He had to insist on this and finally her colleague suggested that she give the 500 back. It was really dodgy and appeared as though she was blatantly trying to steal from us. If you stay here I highly recommend that you watch your wallet!

The small rooms are kept clean, but the whole place has a shabby feel. The bathroom contains a toilet and shower on a total area of maximum 2 m2. The wooden door was clearly suffering from being in the wet atmosphere. Considering the price, the rooms are reasonable though.
In the breakfast room, they have some kind of bug repellent circulating in the A/C which gives a horrid smell and makes breathing hard. Go some place else for breakfast!
The service is good, reception responded well to our requests and are very honest: They required us to pay upfront in cash, at which stage by accident I paid 500 rupias too much. Reception called five minutes later when they noticed and repaid the 500.
