“Dont get carried away by the positive reviews”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed November 2, 2008

We were amused by the positive reviews on the internet (almost all reviews are by tourists from out of India). We called the hotel by phone and asked for a booking.

On arrival, we were offered to have a look at the rooms before checking in. We found that the rooms were neat and with all basic amenities for a comfortable stay.

The tariff is fixed a couple of hundred rupees more for the first second and third floors. We were informed that the difference in tariff for the upper floors is for the views from the balconies of those rooms. However, we did not find the "views" worth for the additional money.

The main catch in this hotel is that there is no room service and there are no televisions in the rooms. It is to be appreciated that these things are being informed in advance before check in, for the guest to decide about opting to stay.

Also, you will not get Indian food from the restaurant attached to the hotel.

Considering the fact that there is no room service, there are no televisions and that the restaurant does not have Indian food, the tariff is not justified.

For same tariff or a few hundred rupees less, many other hotels / homestays are available with better service and amenities.

We have been to Kumily three times, and stayed at Chrissies twice. I wouldnt stay anywhere else now.

Having read a few recent negative reviews, I feel that I should redress the balance a bit. (we were also there at the same time).

I have only stayed in room 13, which has a fantastic view, and a comfortable bed. I would describe the rooms as simplistic rather than basic, as they are tasteful, clean and comfortable.

There is no TV or room service, and if you want to stay on the top floor then you will have a bit of a climb. If all these things are high priority for you, then you would be better off somewhere else.

The things that Chrissies is really good for are the peace and quiet, the friendly staff, and very helpful owners who can suggest many fantastic things to do and places to see apart from the boat ride. Additionally the wildlife at the hotel is great. Once you settle into the slower pace you can watch the amazing birds that live in the trees outside your balcony, and of course the monkeys which are great entertainment.

  • Liked — Clean, quiet and the wildlife
  • Disliked — nothing

I totally agree with TravellersBrisbane's review of Chrissie – the
reviews belie the truth. My partner and I stayed there in March this
year. We were desperate to stay there as Chrissie accommodation had
received so many glowing recommendations, and other options inThekkady were
either too expensive or downright unappealing. True, as is stated in
other entries, the owner is “friendly”, however; I cannot help but
think there is a tendency amongst travellers to confuse “friendliness”
with duty.

The rooms though clean were VERY basic with not a shred of luxury in
sight, and this extends to the absence of a waste bin. The beds were no
better than slabs of wood buffered with flannelette style sheets, and
dressed with brick pillows for extra comfort. The wash room facilities
were also basic but clean. That said, our room saw neither a brush or a
mop in the time we were there, and neither were our towels changed.
When we did ask for the room to be cleaned we were told that the cleaner
had gone home! How dare she!

The accommodation itself is set amongst trees and the best views
afforded amongst the brambled greenery are metal roof tops of people's
houses. Whilst silence is its forte, the views are not. Also, there seem to
be an inordinate number of steps to climb so if you are physically
challenged, the accommodation and setting is not ideal. The hotel itself is
about a 20 mins walk from the main interests, which is not too taxing.
However, if you are afraid of the dark then it is not ideal if you want
to try out other eating places that are in the cluster, and these are
few.

We paid INR1,750, which I feel was rather expensive for what was on
offer, there are better options in the vicinity. I am glad that we did not
book our trip to the reserve through the receptionist, as a one way
journey would have cost INR40 per person in a rickshaw as opposed to INR
per rickshaw.

The only reason we went to Chrissie was because of the rave reviews but found the reality to be somewhat disappointing. That said, the food is good and hearty, should you find yourself hankering for Western fare.

  • Disliked — Expensive for what it is and accommodation lacked comfort

Please stop recommending this hotel, I stayed there after recommendations on this website and yes the owners are friendly and helpful, But please, the rooms are Very Very Basic, the bed was as hard as a rock, no fans, no A/C, no safe, no internet, no tv, no fridge - not much of anything. Bathroom was also basic with no vanity, just a sink. We had an extra bed for our son 13yrs, which turned out to be a mattress on the floor, it wasn't even made up - for which they charged 500INR per night, far superior places in India were charging 250INR, only high end were charging a similar rate. They say not to leave anything outside on the balcony due to the monkeys, so no air circulation - towels wouldn't dry. They did not make up the room on any of the days we were there, no clean towels. It is a walk or rickshaw ride to town, the only saving grace is that it is quiet. It has a balcony which is among the trees, which is peaceful, but not spectacular view as stated in one review.

We went last week to Chrissie's GuestHouseand this was a really good pause in our hard trip in India. Very clean, good price, nice staff, lovely owner, delicious food...I got really sick (diarrhea) and had to go to the hospital and thanks God I was in that place, where Chrissie helped us to go to the hospital, to recover myself. Great deal in Thekkady. Don't even doubt to go there, Gabriela Barbosa (Spain) oliveiragabi@hotmail.com

Adel was very welcoming. The rooms were very clean, basic, but all that one needs. The bed was brick hard and it was like sleeping on a board. Awake most of the night because of this. The veranda was lovely and the view from this was peaceful. More expensive than the other homestays and I think that breakfast should be included because of this. We never tried the restaurant as we were told by two other guests that the service was too slow. All in all it was probably one of the top three places were we stayed around India. The main problem was the park itself. It was a complete waste of time and money. It costs 300 rs.to get in and 150rs. for the boat ride. Then of course, you have the ricksaw cost-which is minimal. We went on the 7.30 am boat and this meant getting up at 6.am. We all piled into the boat and as the only toilet was locked had to walk up to the hotel nearby. We saw one deer and five otters. Could not control our excitement. Bring back the loch ness monster, please, all is forgiven. This is a complete waste of time and money and as there is not much more to do in Kukmily I would give it a miss and drive on by. The other thing that people are perhaps not aware of is that except for the 40 min. walk to the boat (if you did not want a ricksaw) there are only organised walking tours. Some are eight hours, some are overnight and there is a three hour nature ramble. More money.! Periyar National Park is a waste of time and money. The only saving grace was the beautiful drive down from Munnar.Thank goodness our homestay was good.

  • Liked — adels' approach.
  • Disliked — brick-hard bed. Chrissies' lack of interest.

Excellent relaxing place, Adel the owner is overfriendly and looked even more disappointed then us when we told him we hadn't had any luck on our daytrip into the wildlife park (no elephants, no deer, almost no nothing, we were really unlucky it seems).
The rooms are good, the restaurant also, but don't expect local food, this is international travel stuff, very Italian too, and quite good for that. Breakfast is great. If you want beer, buy it outside and bring it with you, because they don't have the licence.
