“"Inhospitable and expensive place"”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 19, 2012

I went to this place on 22/10/12 from munnar. We booked our rooms 3 months before, and had a warm welcome in a typical Kerala style but the location of the rooms were not good.
Room service is not good at all as we asked them for extra bed at 8pm but they gave us at 11 pm, after requesting several times.

Spa is very expensive and the money they take don't give that much service.
Price of food like 5star but the quality is like 2star. Taste of North Indian foods are worst.
There is no guidance from the hotel management for any sight seeing places.

Finally, In my point of view this hotel is worthless.

Dear Mr. Kumar,

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback, both positive and negative. Our 44 cottages all differ slightly in terms of view, especially in terms of elevation on the hillside. While most face directly to the Periyar Tiger Reserve; some face our Ayurvedic wellness center and gardens; others look onto our swimming pool. Our reservations team members do ask for preferences when we accept bookings, and we do our best to reserve rooms that meet those preferences. The request made with your reservation was for "three rooms immediately next to each other, preferably not at a high elevation." Our team reserved your party the three rooms most requested under such circumstances.

We are nonetheless sorry that you did not like those rooms. According to our records no one from your party requested a room change; whenever possible we do our best to accommodate such requests (we happened to be at full occupancy during your stay, but even so we would have done our best to change your rooms for three others). I hope that you will grant us another opportunity to demonstrate our hospitality and ability to adapt when notified of a problem.

I also see in our records that we did not deliver your extra bed on time, or even close to on time. There is no excuse for that. Only a sincere apology. Our housekeeping team is extra-staffed during full occupancy, but even so we make mistakes. Thanks to your feedback we are now training a new team member for that department. Please give us another chance to get it right.

Ayura, our wellness center, is not inexpensive. Its utilization by a large percentage of our guests, often with multiple treatments during a multi-day stay, has led us to believe that Ayura provides much-needed rejuvenation to those guests, along with a sense of value. Ayura has achieved the highest rating in Kerala's certification of Ayurvedic facilities, and we are proud of that achievement so each year we conduct research on other similar facilities--what they offer, what they charge, etc.--and have consistently found our pricing to be average or slightly below average among four and five star resorts in Kerala. All that said, we did not convey that value, nor a sense of service or rejuvenation to you. Our resort management team, including the Ayurvedic doctor responsible for Ayura, have been in discussion since reading this evaluation and have committed to ensuring that we deliver what we say we will to every guest who enters Ayura.

On food: we do offer a small sampling of North Indian cuisine but our focus is on south Indian culinary traditions. Our chef has been notified of your comment and will rise to the challenge.

As for our staff not effectively guiding you on activities, this one hurts the most because most guests say it is our greatest strength. We border the best tiger reserve in India, and are surrounded by the most fertile spice-growing plantations on the planet. We are very proud of our neighborhood and our staff love to share their knowledge. I can only, again, apologize that they somehow did not communicate this enthusiasm and insider knowledge to you and your family effectively. For the next time, take a look at our website's menu listing of activities--http://raxacollective.com/cardamom_activities.html and you will also see an entry about activities or attractions several times a week on our blog site: http://raxacollective.wordpress.com.

Our greatest hope would be to go from worthless to priceless in your evaluation of our resort, so please stay in touch so we can show you what we have done to improve our performance based on the concerns you have raised. For which, again, we thank you for taking the time to communicate.

Best regards from

We stayed at Cardamon County for 2 nights and had a wonderful experience. We were greeted on arrival with a refreshing drink, as well as sandlewood paste to our foreheads for cooling. Our rooms were lovely and comfortable, the grounds well maintained. The staff was exceptional - they remembered our names and always asked about our experiences when we returned from a daytrip or service. The ayurvedic massage was lovely - a very different experience from a traditional massage and incredibly inexpensive by our US standards. The food was great, traditional Kerela southern Indian. The chef came out to speak to us on several occasions, especially if he ever saw one of us sitting alone to make sure we were ok and enjoying ourselves. We took a day trip to the Periyar reserve to go trekking which was amazing. Cardamom County has a book with the various options for trips and activites nearby which was very helpful.
Would strongly recommend Cardamom County

Room Tip: Rooms are spread up a hill - very inviting. If stairs are an issue would request lower level.

We booked the hotel without knowing much about it but the moment we checked in we were bowled over by the welcome as well as the quality of the hotel.

The front office staff welcomed us in traditional Kerala style, complete with Ayurvedic drink and by applying sandalwood paste on our foreheads. Attired in Kerala's traditional sari, the front office staff accompanied us to our room situated around 200 m away.

The room was spacious, well maintained and equipped. The staff were helpful and even went out of their ways to help us in a few matters. It is a pity they do not wear name tags otherwise we would have mentioned their names.

For example, we wanted to leave at 5am and asked if the restaurant could open early. Though they couldn't (they open at 7am), they helped to pack some sandwiches and fruits and drinks and sent to our room at the required time. The staff at laundry also helped to wash our clothes even though it was after the closing time.

Pros:
1. Excellent room - spacious, well maintained and equipped.
2. Excellent and helpful staff
3. The grounds were planted with various spices and trees and kept in beautiful condition
4. Located in quiet corner but still convenient to walk to shops and to the town

Cons
1. Food choices limited
2. Staff at the restaurant have poor command of English and lower level of customer service
3. Very slow wifi connection
4. Pricey ayurvedic massage
5. Room access - hard for old and handicapped people since the rooms are at the side of a hill

I stayed here for two days and loved every minute. The hotel was spread up a hill; the rooms were attractive and very comfortable and best of all was the magnificent customer service. Nothing was too much trouble and the staff provided world class service.

The Ayurvedic massages were very good and were provided in a beautifully appointed building. Every where were the delightful touches that added to the beauty and comfort.

The restaurant and food was good - Aaron was a star in terms of service.

Room Tip: Try to get a room higher up the hill and you can enjoy the antics of the monkeys

Based on a good location on a hillock. There are no pathways to climb up to rooms for disabled or old people. Our parents literally struggled to climb to 3 floored hillock rooms.. tried requesting staff, they couldn't change it for some reason... The pathways are made of uneven basalt rocks which makes it slippery & hazard prone for people during rains. No hand rails, no elevators... Truly environment friendly, but not people friendly... Breakfast was included, unlimited and awesome! But meals were expensive & no good... Service was alright... Won't return again!

Well located hardly half a kilometer from the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary. Well maintained premises and rooms with verandah and privacy. Excellent service and a well equipped ayurvedic centre. Food was good with a mix of local and other specialities. Nice architecture and very courteous staff.
