In our trip in Kerala, Spice village is one of the best hotel.
Service and staff was excellent, everytime ready for you but never
insistent.
Special mention for the staff of the restaurant ( the manager is very good), for the main chef, and for housekeeping staff.
Rooms are very clean and comfortable.
The hotel is in a big property and is nice to visit all.
Kitchen lesson are very interesting!
Food great .. Kerala style but not difficult to eat.
The hotel help you also to organise
outside tour.
The only point is the price of ayuverdic massagge, mexpensive like in Europe.. I think if they have correct price the centre will be full everytime

Fantastic place, you feel at one with nature! Extremely beautiful surroundings, you feel as if you are in the heart of the Kerala rain forest.

Great staff, very friendly and helpful, very professional.

Amazing restaurant, some of the best food we had in Kerala.

Expensive, but go on, treat yourself. Not many places like this in the world!

Very calm feeling to the whole site. Interesting flora. Helpful staff and great food. Cooking demonstrations by the chef were really interesting.

Came to Thekkady intending to stay at the Green View Homestay but that unfortunately didn't work out (see separate review for that hotel).
Spice Village looked welcoming (with its lush gardens and eco-friendly credentials) but we had no idea how much until we moved in the next day. We were lucky that the off-peak season had just started (from 1st May) so Renju at reception was able to give us a great rate.
The rooms were lovely with lemon grass scent and exquisite linen. Staff could not do enough and there is also wi-fi at the library - pity we could not get it in the room itself though. There is a very atmospheric bar there named after the first warden of the game park and we spent some very pleasant evenings there soaking up the catalogued photos and a few G&Ts before moving on to the restaurant for an excellent supper (both Indian and western cuisines are available).
The breakfasts are also superb and really set you up for the day, whether its for a trip to the Periyar Game Reserve nearby or shopping at the various local artisan shops. The hotel shop is also surprisingly good value.
Highly recommended.
When Renju heard that we were then en route back to Kochi via Kanyakumari, she managed to get us great deals at other CGH group hotels in Alleppey (Marari Beach) and Kochi (Brunton Boatyard). Well done, Renju and we would certainly stay with CGH again. And did!

Room Tip: Haggle hard on the rates

This was our third CGH earth property. The reception area is a bit gloomy and the welcome although more than adequate was less effusive than we had received at Brunton Boatyard and Coconut Lagoon. For a big property it is charmingly well signposted & beautifully landscaped.

We found the whole place a bit claustrophobic although appreciate this is a jungly area so obviously has a lot of trees, Just felt we could never see the sky.
Also the restaurant area feels gloomy.

The pool is v. attractive and the drop in temperature from the coastal area particularly in April is very welcome. We had some torrential downpours in April.

The rooms were very spacious and attractively furnished but the bathrooms were a big let down - as if the designer had totally run out of inspiration. Size wise they are adequate, but there is only a tiny window and it felt like a travel lodge in Warrington, functionality was fine of course.

Food was varied but not quite to the standard we enjoyed at other CGH earth properties and some of the european food really missed the mark, best to stick to Keralan.
We really liked the bar although the barman moved slower than the average glacier, the snooker table was wonderful.
Apparently the boat trip on the lake is not that great as all animals disappear and you have to queue; we wanted to do the bamboo raft trip which sounded great but your kids have to be over 12. The hotel does have a lot of activities though.
Thekkady town provides an interesting walk although you are pestered obviously by shopowners.
The nearby elephant excursion is good fun but a major word of warning - DO NOT get on the elephants back after you have washed it to get sprayed by its trunk. Its undoubtedly good fun but the water is filthy and both my children and I to a lesser extent got very sick for the next 4 days both ends. My wife didn't get sprayed and she was not sick.
Spice Village is a wonderful property it just somehow did not appeal quite as much as the other CGH hotels we visited -

Last time our stay wasn't long enough to appreciate the place and we broke one of our cardinal rules that we will never stay in one hotel more than once, but we were glad we did.
The staff were once again excellent and were extremely and genuinely friendly. They knew we were returning guests and the manager came to greet us at check in. We also got a welcome back note in our room and a welcome back cake!!! They even arranged to have jack fruit which my wife has never had. Since it was our last day and we were going to one of their sister hotel in Kochi, they had it delivered there. Service which cannot be beaten!!!
The place is still well maintained. The extra acivities such as the cookery demonstration, the tour of the gardens and traditional dances happen every day and worth seeing. My wife particularly enjoyed the daily cooking with various spices.
Only downside was that there were more mosquitos which might have been the season.
Overall still excellent.
