“Food Good but Caberet not Good”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 6, 2014

Firstly, it's not on Bypass Road, it's on SBT Road next to Periyar Seven Hills Guesthouse.

Food is excellent and not the same old tourist fodder. Where else have you had beef with pineapple and chocolate.....it was delicious! Not the cheapest (anout the same as all the other tourist fodder places we checked out) but we ate there twice and would recommend the food and garden ambience.

The caberet was not so good. We think it was just an unfortunate one off but a near neighbour who had drunk too much came in for an arguement. We subsequently found out from our guesthouse that he had lost money gambling to the owner of Coconut.

A scuffle followed just inside the house and I did see the owner kick the man while he was down. Owner is a large fit young man whilst the other man was around 50 and much smaller. This was not James Bond fighting for his life so kicking an older, smaller man while he is down is not acceptable in my book.

I think the owner realised his mistake and then became quite contrite and tried so hard to gently get the man to leave. He did but returned with what we are guessing was his son. He argued with the owner and hit him just once. The owner did not defend himself almost in admission that he had done wrong.

Then it all quietened down and we enjoyed our food and beer although, as previously suggested, it is slow service as he relies on 'just in time' stock management. i.e he goes out on his bike to buy the ingredients but at least they are fresh.

“50% excellent - 50% poor”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 12, 2013

Its hard to review this restaurant as our two experiences were very different. The first time we pop in for a lunch. The restaurant is just a few tables placed in beautiful garden. We had a delicious omelet and rather weak coffee. Overall the place was pleasant for lunchtime break and the food was good.
We came back the same night for a dinner what turned out to be a bad decision. Unfortunately there was a blackout (scheduled so they should have been prepared for it) and bit of a rain. There was no shelter so we couldn't hide. They served our food almost an hour later, the fried chicken with papaya was very good but cold. Coconut with honey was meant to be a starter but came at the end.
It's a hit or miss experience. Place with good potential but requires more attention from the owners.

“Fantastic food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 6, 2013

A great choice of local dishes, with very personal service.

This is a very small establishment, with only two chefs - so if they are busy be prepared to wait - It is worth it.

“Great Garde Location - Always fresh food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 4, 2013

We have been in Coconut Garden twice during our sty in Kumily - we never got disapointed. Food is alwasy fresh prepared - so if all tables are occupied you might have to wait for 30 min. The menue has normal Indian dishes but also very special, created by the chief, tastes e.g. spicy chicken with honey and friuts, some special Lassies etc.
The owner runns everything e.g. ordering, cooking, serving and invoicing.... all in one hand :-)
The best place we found in Kumily and Thekkady.

“Sweet concept, great food - long wait but well worth it!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 30, 2012

After arriving in Kumily with no idea about where was good to eat, we saw the Coconut Garden mentioned as a good bet on here so thought we'd give it a go. It is literally in a garden so if you are prone to mozzi bites make sure you cover up and take some repellent with you. The garden is big enough to seat about 50 people, but in a good effort not to overcrowd the place, there is seating for about 20 people max, the tables are spaced out so you don't feel like you're on top of other eaters either. Great news is, this place also serves Kingfisher - hurrah. The place is run by a guy and his mate, they have a 2 burner stove and prepare all the food fresh in the tiniest outdoor kitchen, which also doubles up as a bar, you walk past it on your right as you go towards the seating areas. Baring that in mind, food does take a while to come - we probably waited 30-40 minutes for ours, but it was definitely worth it. You could tell everything had been freshly prepared, it was so tasty. We would recommend this place to anyone passing through Kumily, and the prices are very reasonable.
