“Basic and in the middle of nature”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 6, 2013

This is a government property so expect good location but the quality of rooms are very basic- which is okay. The staff is very friendly too and I assure you will get the value for the money you spent there. I recommend this place highly if you have a tight budget.

Room Tip: Have a look at your options before finalizing a room

We did not quite know what to expect as Aranya nivas is in the middle of the sanctuary. We expected peace and quiet; but it was quite the opposite. During the day it was as if the entire state of Kerala was inside the sanctuary. The main attraction was the boat ride in the lake and the queues were miles long. Many had to go back disappointed.

We were lucky that we were put up in Aranya nivas. The hotel reception staff called us in the morning on the day of arrival and asked us whether we would like to book tickets for the boat safari. This service is done at no extra cost and done by them so we avoid the queue altogether. We were surprised to get the call and the thoughtfulness of the staff baffled us. The reception is in the old wing and is very beautiful. The staff is extremely polite, considerate and approachable. They gave us the best room available and told us that we are free to look at the others and explained why this room was better.Overall, was very impressed with everything.

The new rooms are neat, clean but lack the character of the old wing. I would have much preferred the old wing with its stone walls ;old world charm. But think those were the pricier rooms.

We went on the boat ride twice without even thinking about the queues as the staff booked it for us. One lady in our boat had to wait for 2.5 hours in the queue.

The nights are the best here; once the crowds leave, the peace of the place cannot be explained in words. We spent our evenings sitting on the banks of the lake and basically doing nothing. Did not feel like moving at all. The place draws you like a magnet and the walk around the place is great.

The giant squirrels visible from our room will always remain a very special memory.

Room Tip: Choose a room overlooking the forest.

We were there in March 2013.The hotel was well maintained, the staff was good and the food was also good.
It is very disappointing that there is no half day jeep safari .If you are there only in the early evening or morning ,you are not able to take a jeep safari. There is only a full day Jeep safari available.
Periyar house arranges for the boat ride tickets. Periyar house counter staff has little knowledge about the jungle trails available. There should be brochures and information available at the counter, apart from the information at the Main information centre which is outside the Sanctuary gate.
To experience the jungle , this is a very good place to stay and the jungle walk is very fascinating. You get to see many birds , butterflies and insects .It is worth experiencing.

Thekkady is a typical Kerala countryside, with rich vegetation, constant rains and damp weather (at least that's how it was when we went ).

Thekkady’s single biggest attraction is its huge lake. With 2-tier motorised boats one can go boating which takes about 2 hours per trip. On a lucky day, I’m told that many wild animals can be spotted along the lake’s shores. All that we spotted were a group of bisons (very far away), a couple of wild pigs and a herd of sambhar. We didn’t even see an elephant, for which Thekkady is so well known and famous for !! We were informed that during the rainy season, animals do not venture out since there will be enough water for them to drink inside the jungle itself.

The Forest Guides and those who manage the forest reserve were not very helpful. When I asked to go for a jungle trek, I was told that when it rains they do not encourage it because of the jungle leeches, millipedes and centipedes that would be swarming the jungle floor. This is exactly what I meant when I said "Poor Participation". With a place like that if only the authorities would take little efforts in providing what a good number of tourists like me come for - that is to spend more time exploring the jungles, then this place would be such a superb destination. But alas !

Quite frankly, in Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary apart from the Jungle Treks, there isn’t much else to do. The Tiger Trails etc., are all seasonal and are heavily weather dependent. During monsoon time, the place has almost nothing to offer visitors except the 2-hour boat ride. Spice Tour though available, isn’t very exciting. You are taken around to see the various plantations like Tea, Pepper, cardamom, Vanilla, and numerous medicinal herbs and plants.

Thekkady is quite easily accessible from any of the major cities of Tamil Nadu / Kerala, India. The place is well-connected by road and train services. The net also provides visitors all the information that they will require. From Thekkady bus stop, Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is just 15 minutes and Rs.100 away by auto rickshaw. Once within the sanctuary it is very tranquil and quiet with only the sounds of the jungle - mostly the insects, some birds, monkeys, and the occasional wild animal.

The place is very basic, modest and down-market in its offerings as the tourists who seem to visit it !

Room Tip: Opt for the ground floor rooms. Monkey menace would be lesser. On the first-floor monkeys wreck havo...

I stayed in Periyar House in March 2013 with my family. The rooms were clean. Hotel is well maintained. Dinner and breakfast was included and options were quite good. Dinner was full course. Same with breakfast. Hotel arranged for the boat ride tickets without any issues. A good place to stay within the forest. Liked it.

Room Tip: Go for the rooms in the first floor. watch out for monkeys here and there.

The location is great, inside the forest area. Only negetive side is that within 6PM you have to come back, since the area is restricted.
The hotel must arrange some amusement and cultural program at night to engage the guests.
The biggest advantage of booking here is that you do not have to worry about the boat booking as it is confirmed when you book this property.
The experience of boating in Periyar lake was marvellous and the staffs were helpful. The room and bathroom was spacoua and clean. The food was good and tasty.
Also, there is parking space and quarter is available for driver.
Overall the experience was very good.

Periyar house KTDC is worst hotel in Thekkady. First it is situated into the the jungle where people are not allowed to enter or go outside after 6 PM. Lot more cultural activities are performed outside the jungle starting from 6 PM onward, which you will not be able to enjoy while your stay in this hotel.

Rooms are ok types, not very cleaned & sanitized. There is no air condition in any of the rooms still you will have fresh and cold air to breath and nice sleep i guess. Hotel is remotely located, you will find almost deserted around the hotel.

I think north indians will not be able to have food in their restaurant. Quality in terms of variability in items and hygiene is pathetic.. Foods are extremely spicy, which you will not be able to eat. Restaurant ambiance is like local roadside Dhaba... Most of the time bucket of buffet would be empty, you will have to ask them to refill the items.

We tried to go for recreational activities to spend our time like playing Badminton (Court is nice), cycling around the area, boating in the periyar lake, Tribal Dance in the evening outside the jungle & Elephant ride ...

Although there are many programs run by state government for exploring the jungle e.g mountain hiking, night safari, day safari etc..but you will not find any animal out there.. all these activities are very costly and you wil not find valaue for money...you have to spend money to enjoy in this desrted place...no happening place at all...
