“Wonderful place to stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 22, 2013

There are cheaper places in Thekkadi but this is the cheapest one inside the national park itself. If you want to trade places for the bustle of a market town for the quietness of a forest, this is the close budget accommodation you can get.

The deluxe rooms are spacious, have running hot water and a functioning television set.
The television was not really used. There is a driveway you can walk around even after dark but you cannot go beyond that as its Forest Department land after that.
The staff are very very attentive and room service is prompt. No bar though. The food was extremely well appreciated.

Assured boat tickets are for next morning - ask the front desk to get tickets for the 7:30am boat.

The other benefit is that the boat jetty from where all activities start and the lake itself is a short 10 min walk away.

Monkeys are not really as much of problem as you might think it is. I never saw one in the corridors - just a few lounging around in the grounds outside.

Have reasonable expectations and you will be satisfied - tourism happens only in buffer zones in India and never in a core area. You will be very very lucky to see elephants near the hotel, but deer is not unheard of. We had the company of a lone wild boar and several birds.

Room Tip: Ask for rooms on the first floor - preferable a corner room.

I saw decent reviews for KTDC Periyar House and booked it through MakeMyTrip. I was not sure how the place would be because firstly it was a property managed by KTDC (govt. owned) and it was my first visit to Thekkady. But the property turned out to be too good. The first thing that I noticed was there are only 3 properties inside the wildlife sanctuary; all run by KTDC and Periyar House is one of them. The rate for the 3 properties increase depending on the proximity to the jungle - so Periyar House was like the entry point, and the other two relatively more inside the jungle. Another thing which I observed was the space in the reception area, lounge and the aisles - there was good space and lot of air flowing. The check-in process was smooth and the staff were very good. Rooms were neat and clean and spacious. There was nothing which bothered us. The food was good and we had complimentary breakfast as a part of the booking and the spread was good. The only drawback would be that since the hotel is inside the sanctuary, and the sanctuary entrance closes by 6 pm, you have to be inside the hotel by that time. You cannot venture out after 6 pm. For us it was not an issue as we could spend good time enjoying the jungle and feeling the nature close. I would definitely recommend this hotel for people who would like to have a quiet stay inside the jungle, at an affordable cost not compromising on quality.

good stay, overall.budget accomcodation...excellent location..best part is the periyar river/lake just next to the hotel..you acn always walk down to it...good food for its value....boat tickets arranged at the hotel itself...the hotel staff is quite pleasant and ready to help.....other activities too displayed there.....very helpful manager!
But pls check out forest dept activities before you plan a visit to periyar coz you get to know of it only when you get there and realise that you don't have enough time for them, viz, bamboo rafting, jungle scout, full day jungle safari, half day jeep safari, eleohnat ride ,tribal dnac e and so on

I visited thekkday with my wife and six year old son, Periyar house is jungle lodge located inside the periphery of the periyar wildlife sanctuary, there are plus and minus of this.
plus being you are very close the wildlife and minus being you are away from the city and 6 pm the gate of sanctuary closes so you can not go our for shopping.
I would recommend this resort for the people who like wildlife, there are wild creatures seen around the lodge , There was wild elephant in the night near to the lodge and security personnel had to shoo it away, though its not dangerous for the people who are staying there
Periyar lake is walkable distance from the resort, also from the back side of resort there are steps where you can walk to the side of the lake and can spot animals birds etc.
I had spotted large squirrel, wild boars around the resort
Food and service is acceptable and not so great.
But if you are real widlife enthusiasts then it would not matter, as it didnt matter for me

Room Tip: Delux rooms are good

Thekkady is a place that you would go to invariably visit the periyar tiger reserve - so why stay anywhere else but the reserve itself!

Location: Inside the reserve with lush greenery, trees and the forest, monkeys and deer for company.
Rooms: Rooms are spacious, Clean and well maintained. Bathrooms are clean with a 24 hour hot water supply. There are bars attached to the windows to keep the monkeys out - this I understand is a more recent development.
Food: quite decent, although at peak times, an ala-carte order might take quite long - in fact we were point blank refused ala-carte service due to the crowd at the restaurant. At other times though, service was prompt and efficient.
Service and Staff - quite helpful, and were eager to help put. Room service was prompt.

Points to note -
The gates to the reserve close at 5:30 or so. So it is quite essential to come back by then.
The hotel arranges for tickets to the boat ride at the lake - inform them in advance so that they can book one for you. While going early for the boat ride might help, one might not be able to see animals at all - in our case we managed to see some elephants and bisons. But the boat ride itself is quite relaxing and is highly recommended.
The forest trek however is arranged by the forest department and the tickets for tge same is available only outside the reserve - about 500m outside the gates. Make sure you make atleast one trek.

It was overall a very good experience with great value for money adn comfortable rooms.would love to go back to the reserve again just to experience the forest setting again.

It is one of the property run by KTDC. Hotel is located inside Periyar Tiger reserve and due to this there are some restrictions. You have to come inside reserve gate before 6.00 PM becoz entry is closed afterwards but there is a catch in this clause according to the notice board in hotel reception area .i.e. If you go for "Tribal Dance" program (Timing are 6.00 - 7.00 PM and entry is allowed till 7.30 PM) then by showing the ticket of program at forest entry gate, you can enter.
The hotel is surround by thick forestation and its a nostalgic feeling when you come out of building and roam around. There are lots of langoors and black langoors on trees and their cry/noise & jumping between trees add to the atmosphere. Quite interesting feeling.
There is a badminton court at the back side of hotel and a recreation room in front of dinning hall with some indoor games.
Periyar river is flowing at the back of hotel and can be accessed through stone stairs. Be careful and walk on stones becoz there are leeches in grass & they can stick to your foot if you are not careful.
Periyar lake is some 10 minutes walking distance from resort and you can book boat tickets in advance from reception but tickets for early morning boat rides delivered around 45 minutes.
They room rent is with buffet breakfast and dinner included in tariff. Both are decently good in quality.
Our room was spacious enough with clean bathroom with running hot and cold water. Hotel staff advised us to keep the windows and doors closed to avoid the nuisance of monkeys.
If you like jungle experience and wanted to give city & town a miss then its a must place for you.
We really enjoyed our stay.
