“A peaceful Location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 19, 2013

We stayed at The Old Harbour Hotel for 2 nights at the beginning of our tour of Kerala and 1 night at the end. I booked this hotel purely from the good reviews on Trip Advisor and was not disappointed. everything has been pretty much covered in the previous reviews, superb location for viewing the sights in Fort Cochin, the Chinese Fishing nets are literally at the end of the road a 2 minute walk away. The hotel is about an hours drive from the airport. We ate in the Garden Restaurant on all 3 nights we stayed at the hotel, and it is a very pleasant setting to enjoy a meal although it was very humid during our stay, but we still choose to eat outside rather than in where it was cooler. The food was good and the portions were generous, though quite expensive. I tried the Tuna Burger one night after reading a recommendation for this in another Trip Advisor review, and they were right, it was really tasty so I'd recommend that too, but make sure you're hungry as it was huge. My one surprise was there were no spirits available, only wine and beer, so my wife had to forego her Vodka and Tonic, but they did offer wine by the glass, though there was no choice as to type other than red or white, she choose the white and it was acceptable, the beer however was cold and went down nicely. All in all I agree with most reviews on this Hotel and would recommend it as a comfortable base in Fort Cochin

We stayed for 2 nights at this hotel at the start of our holiday in mid-January 2013. It was found for us by our Travel Agent, Kerela Connections. What a wonderful start it made to our holiday. Really clean and very comfortable. A wonderful place to be to help to cope with the time difference after the flight. Food was excellent and the Marsala Dosa we had for breakfast was the best we found on the holiday! Excellent. Highly recommmend this small friendly hotel.

Room Tip: We stayed in a garden cottage but I don't think there will be a bad choice in this small hotel.

After contacting the hotel to reserve our stay, we asked if they could suggest a reliable company regarding the hire of a vehicle and a good driver, Jude at Recepton was most helpful and suggested their senior driver Jossee ( who must be the safest driver in India ) for the requested time, he also advised how our trip in Kerala should be configured to avoid back tracking. The charming hotel is well situated close to the chinese fishing nets area The owner manager is very much in evidence and the staff were all well trained and very welcoming The rooms with outside shower were comfortable with big beds and very clean. A nice garden provided a pretty setting to evening meals. Highly recommended.

cochin is more bustling that i expected, and this small hotel was a great place to get away from it all while being in the heart of it all. the room - actually the suite - was large and well decorated and restful. meals in the garden were slow and relaxing. the staff was helpful. all was good.

We stayed in Old Harbour Hotel on September 2012 for 4 nights. As we booked in advance, we were happy to discover the Hotel looks even better than in the online pictures. It's a great boutique hotel, also by western standards, which is perfectly located in the heart of Fort Cochin. The hotel has a colonial style decoration, with a wonderful garden and swimming pool.

The staff gave us superb service which we have never encountered before (and we have traveled around the world). Everyone was kind and intelligent, and they have been very helpful even though we had lots of requests and questions.

As we arrived off-season, we were offered an upgrade to a suite, but decided to stay in a beautiful garden view room. The room was cleaned spotless twice a day, not forgetting flower decorations. Food was excellent, and it's one of the few places in town that serve alcohol. Not only free wifi, there is also a possibility to use a common laptop.

Thank you Jude and the rest of the staff – you made our stay in Cochin unforgettable!

Room Tip: we preferred the garden view room over a suite.

We spent three nights here. The hotel is decorated in a "spare" style with antiques and flowers. It has a lovely swimming pool set in a really beautiful garden in which meals can be taken. In the evening it is lit and Indian music is played. The staff were incredibly helpful and courteous. Breakfast was great - try the masala dosas. The only downside for us were the vegetables served with dinner which were plain, boiled. The chef (who was trained in Glasgow) told me this is what "your people" want with a little butter and salt. The next evening I was provided with the same but with a dull curry flavoured gravy. The rest of the food, especially the fish, was good quality and nicely spiced. Also you get patterns made with jasmine flowers on your bed.

Our arrival in Kochi was disappointing as we were met by a really surly, grumpy driver from The Old Harbour Hotel. This did not set us off with a great impression from the start. The car was awful, dirty towels on the seats, no cold water, not great. On arrival at the hotel, the boot of the car was opened and we were left, we had to move all our bags inside, no-one to help and no-one to greet us. Eventually we were checked in and taken to a room where someone has obviously just been - no other rooms available! The covers on the bed were pulled back, magazine scattered across the desk. Our room was also facing a back alley which was noisy, so we had to sleep with earplugs. I am glad we were only here for 1 night, I didn't like this hotel and I didn't like Cochin. We have travelled through India and this is the most touristy place we have found - which is what I didn't like about it. It was good to move on and I would only return to get to other parts of Kerela

We appreciate the feed back and have worked with our transporter , We do have a man at the entrance who carries the bags, perhaps at that moment he was attending natures call but im sure the bags to the rooms were taken by our staff. It is unfortunate that the guest did not like our city .

At the heart of ancient Fort Cochin, Kerala, a place that exudes history and culture, is the 'Old Harbour Hotel'. A 300 year- old building that has for long been a heritage monument of this town, now reopened as a boutique hotel. Built in the Dutch style of architecture with hints of Portuguese influences, it was the first hotel of old Cochin. Later it remained a residential home to employees of English Tea broking firms until it was left unused for a period of time. ... more   less
