“Not bad but could be so much better...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 13, 2013

We stayed at Koder House at the beginning of our two week trip through Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The building definitely has lots of character, being the former mansion of a Cochin Jewish family. The location is also great, much quieter than mainland Ernakulam and right in the heart of Fort Cochin near to most of the attractions and restaurants.

We had one of the ground floor rooms just near reception. The room was very large and had lots of atmosphere, however like some of the other posters, our ground floor room definitely had a slightly musty/damp smell and was somewhat noisy as it faced the street (however this noise did end around 11pm). Plus the airconditioning was quite noisy which made it a little hard to sleep. The bathroom could have used a little maintenance as some of the fittings were a little tatty. The food at the restaurant (for breakfast) was nothing to write home about, however the restaurant did seem very busy during dinner times.

I agree with other posters that the staff, particularly the reception staff, were very helpful in arranging taxis and providing advice on the local area.

With a little bit of maintenance and a minor renovation this could be a great heritage hotel with lots of character but considering the high season price of Rs. 12,000 per night I thought that it was only OK value.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the street are somewhat noisy however the traffic noise tends to die down after around...

We spent four nights at Koder House in early January 2013, staying in one of the top floor suites.
The positives:
1) Great location - opposite a park which borders the water and the old Chinese fishing nets, and close by to lots of good restaurants and most of the major historical sites.
2) Extremely helpful front of house staff who organized (at very short notice) a houseboat for us, a transfer to the airport, reservations to a local cultural performance and they gave us advice about how to see the nearby sites on foot. We don't think that they charged a mark up for any of these arrangements.
3) Free wifi throughout the house.
4) Eager to please restaurant staff.
5) Spacious rooms in a historical building.

The negatives:
1) We felt that the cleaning team let down our experience of Koder House. There did not seem to be much effective cleaning going on, particularly given the number of people servicing our room and the frequency with which we found them in our room. A room at the price we paid really ought to be better at this.
2) We both ended up with bites after sleeping in the bed. I don't think they were bed bugs but something was biting us.
3) Minor quibble with the shower - it would frequently cut out and took a while to drain.

The cleaning issue can and ought to be easily fixed. We would not recommend staying here unless you had some assurance that this was being done.

This is a an extremely comfortable and interesting place to stay. The hotel is beautifully maintained and has a sense of history, so it's very pleasant to relax in either the restaurant or lounge. My room was clean, secure and spacious - more like an apartment with a bedroom, dressing room and a very large bathroom, which was clean and modern. It looked out onto the nearby park, which was nice as well.
Koder House is in a great location with all the sights in easy reach and Princess Street close at hand for shopping./eating options. Breakfast was excellent and served in the restaurant, which is a very nice place to start the day. The staff were excellent and very helpful - even my clothes were returned beautifully laundered. Overall I had a very relaxing and enjoyable stay. The only little gripe is that it would've been nice to be able to access wifi in my room, however it was ok in the lounge. Based on my experience, this hotel is highly recommended, especially if you like historical/heritage hotels.

Opted to stay one night in Kochi Old Town on our way home with my husband. The House itself was fantastic, full of memorabilia and each apartment was very roomy. It really was like stepping back in time. We ate in the restaurant, which was very good, with attentive service. There is a small pool as well. Opted for a late check out and just lounged around enjoying the ambience of this part of Kochi, which is old and a bit run down, but very historic. The hotel staff were very helpful and friendly, but had a slight problem with our account on checkout, which was eventually sorted. We also booked a Tuktuk for a couple of hours and was very well looked after and saw ther main sights.

Room Tip: The rooms at the front overlook the busy daily life of the locals but are not noisy of an evening.

We found this hotel very uncomfortable. The room was straight off reception/ the restaurant, it had a damp problem (the smell was quite strong esp when you were trying to sleep), the room was dark, the bathroom was old and tatty, the road was right outside the window, the air-conditioning was very loud, the wardrobe smelt too bad to use, the floor needed a good clean.... The worst hotel we have stayed in for years, we just could sleep and didn't want to spend any time in the room. There are some good reviews for this hotel- so maybe we just got a bad room... So if you do book say you don't want to be on the ground floor. Also the pool isn't usable. Maybe we just got a bad rate, but it felt like boutique prices for a travellers hotel. On a positive note it is in a great location and the building is interesting (tho tatty).

Room Tip: Don't stay on the ground floor

Myself and partner visited koder house for dinner, so we didn't stay there and can't comment on the rooms etc. it was in a lovely period building and the restaurant was busy. I ordered the prawn curry which tasted fine at the time but was very sick later that night and the next day. Be careful what you order there and certainly wouldn't recommend the prawn curry, and we thought it was also overpriced for the quality.

My wife & i decided to spend a week or so in India to celebrate our 40th. wedding anniversary,
we decided not to travel around so we chose Fort Cochin to chill out...Koder House is an amazing boutique/heritage hotel full of history huge rooms with great furniture, balconies & the biggest most comfortable beds.(all the rooms have a/c mini bar)
When i booked direct with the hotel i mentioned that we would be celebrating our anniversary,on that evening the restuarant manager had arranged a suprise cake, balloons, red roses on the table & even a scroll congratulating us!!
After our meal (good food) we returned to our room to find our bed covered in rose petals in a heart shape & garlands of jasmine...truly wonderfull.great hotel, staff are so genuine polite & helpfull we loved it....thank you Koder House x

Room Tip: Top floor suites
