“Authentic home based cooking class!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 29, 2013

My accommodation (SajHome) arranged a cooking class with Maria for me, and I was certainly glad for the experience! Although there is a cafe and a commercial kitchen downstairs, Maria teaches in the kitchen of her home - a 'normal' four burner gas oven and a kitchen table. It's quite an intimate and safe space, and it adds to the 'I can do this at home' feel.

There were only three of us in attendance for my class, but we still cooked the full meal - Lemon Rice, Tomato Chutney, Vegetable Thoran (with beetroot - AMAZING!), Chicken Kurama, and a vegetarian chiili maasala (with eggplant). Maria spent time explaining all the ingredients, the amount of spices to use in various dishes (and regional variations). I thoroughly enjoyed my class and thank Maria for offering the service - and for allowing us all to dig in big time to the food that we cooked! It was great,

“Cooking knowledge, practice and delicious meal included”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 24, 2013

Maria's is very good in sharing her cooking knowledge and her class's very well organized. You will learn a lot about spices, their role and proper application and participate in preparation of several dishes of your choice. You can focus on cooking as all the ingredients come prepared by Maria before - that makes it perfect for mixing stuff and following the recipe - but if you want to learn the whole process including chopping you can be a bit surprised. In the end you will eat what you cooked and Maria's supervising will make sure you will not be disappointed!

“Homely dishes in Maria's home!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 17, 2013

Maria's welcomed us into her kitchen, where she had done the preparation in advance, then explained about the use of spices in Keralan cooking. We wrote down the recipes as we went, and made a dry beetroot curry, a pumpkin and coconut curry, and dahl with a tadka. Maria made a mint and coriander chutney in the blender, and told us how to make the spiced rice which was already prepared. Our role was a bit of stirring, so not as hands on as some classes we have done, but we are still eager to return home and try out the dishes. Also met Maria's husband, who was breaking up a jackfruit from their garden and offered us a piece to taste - really sweet!

“Great Time with Maria!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 11, 2013

Maria is amazing. She made time for us on a day she doesn't normally teach, just so we could have a class before leaving Fort Cochin. She requires a basic 100 rupee deposit, and your class can be either private or in a group. She can teach veg or non-veg options, and you wind up making 4-5 dishes. She spends ample time (appreciated!) talking about the importance and usage of all the spices in Indian cooking. She really cares that you understand. You get to be hands-on behind the stove, and the eating experience afterwards is divine- get hungry before you go, and don't plan anything right after! Everything was amazingly flavorful, and I can't believe I didn't mess it up. There is a lot of food- if you're a small group with a smaller appetite, let her know at the beginning and she will scale back the portions. Her husband George is friendly and welcoming, and getting to meet them and see their home (and new grandkids!) was a pleasure. Go see Maria!!

“Cooking with class”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 29, 2012 via mobile

Maria is a wonderful cook and teacher. She can teach veg or non-veg dishes and has lots of tips and advice for those of us who know nothing about south Indian cooking. We were in a class of 4 and we each had a turn to cook a dish. These were so delicious and it was a pleasure to eat in Maria and George's home.
