“Awesome..”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 3, 2013

Reach before 12.30 or u'll miss most of the main dishes. Don't expect ambience of a normal family restaurant; but far better than a toddy shop.. This place becomes too crowded if u don't reach between 12-12.30..
The main attractions i found were Kappa (tapioca)& fish curry, duck roast, squids & prawns.. But I doubt the gravy used for duck, prawns & squids are the same.. Still it was a treat to have lunch there..
Really awesome place if u love spicy food..

“Best Kerala-Style Spicy Food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 4, 2012

Spent three days in Kochi during a recent vacation..and ate lunch at this place twice! Loved the food. Spicy and delicious, authentic Kerala food. Must try the beef and karimeen polichathu. The rice served here is the Kerala style one, not basmati. So, some may not like it but it goes well with the meals! If you are not picky about crowd and ambience, this is perhaps the best place to have a heavy Kerala-style lunch in Cochin!

Tips:
*Go early. And I mean by 12 p.m. to avoid the crowd. The second time, I reached there by 1 pm and didn't get a seat for 20 mins! Also, food is not prepared there. You get it only for as long as the supplies last. Most of the food is over by 1:30 p.m.
*You need to fight for a table when you go at the peak crowd time. Don't be nice..get hold of a table and stand next to it, even if someone is still eating. Else, someone else will claim the table, even if you were in the restaurant before they even arrived. There is no orderly system in place for seating here.
*If you don't want the meals, there's always appam and side dishes. Not many options, but all the food items they sell, though few, are delicious.

Location:
Walking distance from the Ernakulam boat jetty. You might miss this place as board is in Malayalam. Thanks to the uploaded picture, was able to spot it, else would've walked past the shop for sure :)

“A definite stopover for seafood lovers.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 23, 2012

What's great about the place ? Well here is a place where you get authentic kerala cuisine - seafood. Food is on the spicier side. The name "Shaapu Curry" indicates that it is the style of curry that is served in the "Shaap" (referring to the toddy shops that once chequered the state. Toddy is an natural mild alcoholic drink made from coconut/palms. Given the numbing effect alcohol has on ones tastes - no wonder that the tastes are quite strong).
You also get traditional dishes like 'Kappa'(Tapioca boiled) which is a good choice for having the curries.
To add more authenticity to the taste - a) the cooking is done in the traditional way using 'fire wood' instead of gas/elecytic stoves, b) use of clay/earthen pots for cooking, c) fresh fish purchased daily from the harbour, d) all the masalas are freshly ground by them instead of purchasing

ps - pls note, there is no liquor served here, seating is cramped and uncomfortable, lunch hour is a rush so you may have to wait, prices are slightly high when compared to the class of hotel, ambience is a strange word.
But all this makes up for great food served.

Another hotel you may want to check out is "Sehiyon" near Pullepady Bridge)
