“Would definitely see again next time I'm in Kochi”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 30, 2013

We attended "the Killing of Kichaka", from the Mahabharata, and it inspired me to buy a (very condensed) version of the whole story from the nearby Idiom Bookshop. We saw the dancers applying their makeup, but were a bit disappointed that we didn't see them robing up. The dance itself was magnificent. I think I'm reasonable familiiar with bharatanatyam, but kathakali was a totally new experince, so I appreciated the explanations. I also think they vary the performance from night to night, so I'd be happy to see it again. I would get there early, though, as there are more seats than hand fans - and they make a big difference to comfort.

“Good place to discover the traditional activities”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 30, 2013

We went to see the KALARIPAYTTU ( martial art) and the kathakali dance with makeup.

The martial art was good but found it abit short and not enough explanation for the non initiated.

The makeup of masks of the dancers was fantastic and the dance performance was very good.

“Drama, dance. music and martial arts in one venue”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 29, 2013

This newly built venue is traditional in style and spacious and comfortable where bamboo fans are left casually on seats to supplement the AC .The place has an intimate feel. At least 2 of the art forms are available every day, always including kathakali dance where you can view the face makeup being applied before the performance. They maintain a high standard of performance without fail --we went at least twice a week over 6 months and were never dissappointed. The enthusiasm the performers show and the humility in their ability is truly inspiring and a must visit in For Cochin

“A 'must see' in Kochi”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 28, 2013 via mobile

We weren't really sure what to expect from a kathakali show and worried we may be bored but we found it absolutely fascinating and a great way to spend a couple of hours!
Apparently the traditional shows can go on for up to 18 hours so this is a very tourist friendly snapshot showing just one scene from a full show.
We went early to watch the dancers putting on their make up and see the demonstration about what each facial expression means as there are no words spoken. We were also given a written explanation of the plot to help us follow what was going on which we were extremely grateful for.
The show itself was only about an hour long but it is worth going that little bit earlier to get the full experience.
All in all, highly recommended!

“Culture A+++”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 25, 2013

Our tour leader took us here and I'm so glad he did! We went early so we could see the makeup being applied. Such colour! It was an educational as well as a cultural experience. Do a little research if you're going and it will add to your enjoyment. The singing was very good too ( a little monotonous at times but very skilful all the same).
