We wanted to see a performance of Kathakali dancing in Fort Cochin, and were aware that there were several options. We chose the Greenix Village, but are not able to compare this with others.
We saw the “cultural show” which is a 90 minute programme combining demonstrations of Kathakali facial expressions, a short Kathakali drama sequence, and an exciting display of the ancient martial arts form Kalaripayattu.
We turned up almost an hour before the performance, to watch the painstaking application of the intricate makeup of the Kathakali artist, this was interesting, but some people might find one hour rather too long.
The programme provided only a small sample of the art forms, but we thought the performances were excellent, and we enjoyed the evening greatly. The theatre is air conditioned, which was a relief.
One small moan was that “continuity” between items was poor. There were numerous occasions when the audience was left in darkness and silence for unnecessarily long periods. However, the outstanding performances (particularly of the martial arts, Kalaripayattu) largely made up for this minor annoyance.
Overall, thoroughly recommended.
