“Good Get Away... with room for improvement”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 4, 2014

We recently had been to Summer Sands - a small family (all age group) outing.. Stayed there for 5 days.
Resort is situated on the outskirts of Mangalore - off Mangalore Kerala Highway. Even though it is a little old resort it is maintained well. Staff and service is good. Staff are courteous and are accommodative of special needs and requests.
Food is very tasty and quality is good. Has many cuisines in menu. We did not visit or use club house games. Pool is good and well maintained.
Beach - resort is on beach - for which public access is also present. Since it was raining and sea was rough, beach access was prohibited for safety reasons. But beach was full of dirt washed in from sea. Management can get this cleaned as it adds appeal to resort and it is a safety hazard.
Children out door play area was full of uncut grass and equipment (swings, climbing structure, etc) very badly needs maintenance. Hence kids could not access it.
Rates are on the higher side - hence value rating is average.
There are various places(religious and non religious) one can visit on a day trip from this resort.

Room Tip: Take Air conditioned rooms if you are not used to high humidity..

We recently had a family get together with more than 30 people ages ranging from 5 - 90, everybody had a great time. The staff accommodated our special needs and served special meals as requested catering to all the different tastes and diets. The pool and the surroundings were very appealing and since the sea was in high tide we could not enjoy the beach much but we watched from far and admired the ferocious waves. The cottages were well equipped and the furnishings well suited for families with kids. The property is well maintained and food was very good. Would recommend it to others for families who want spend some quality time with each other while being catered with meals and amenities.

One of the best beach resort which I have across, rooms are spacious, nice beach, large swimming pool, and one of the best food and beverage is being served in this resort, staff is always smiling. The resort management need to look into kids play area.

I visited this resort with my wife and one-and-a-half year old son two weeks back. It is located a few kilometers to the south of Mangalore and the approach roads are unmarked and not well maintained, though not difficult to navigate (I used Google Navigation and didn't face any problem). Checking-in was smooth although it took a tad longer than expected, especially with the very high humidity that made standing in their courtyard tough.

At first glance, the resort turned out to be better than expected with tastefully constructed villas set within a beautifully landscaped garden giving the feel of a jungle resort, connected by wandering walking tracks. Water sprinklers are operated a few times a day to maintain the greenery and cool down the atmosphere, and we didn't mind dodging them on our way about the place at all!! The pool was clean and reasonably sized, actually there were three adjacent pools of different depths. Best time to enter the pool would be in the morning, since it is surrounded by trees it tends to accumulate fallen leaves and insects by evening. While we were there, they weren't serving foods or beverages by the pool. We were told that the closing time of the pool is 7 in the evening, but were surprised to find two couples with kids there even at 7:30!

One drawback though is that even though the resort is located by the beach, the beach itself is short and sharply sloping off to the sea - the sea itself is usually rough and therefore it is unsafe for venturing into the water, especially for children and even amateur swimmers. No life guards here - just one uniformed fellow sits by the side of the beach all through day, whose only job seems to be to keep a silent watch. The best and only way to enjoy the sea here is to have a beach-side snack that they serve on a small adjacent lawn, from where one can safely watch and hear the turbulent sea and soak in the sunset if lucky. As soon as it gets darker, you can see plenty of crabs - huge ones too - scurrying around the beach. A note of caution: the lawn is lines by many ant-hills and the red ants there are in plenty, always eager to bite viciously!! They should take of this at least!!!

The Deluxe AC room I had booked over phone (no advance payment) was big, clean and tastefully decorated, though simple. The bathroom was also airy and well fitted. The staff keeps the resort clean, although the general maintenance is just average with many villas, the club house and even the reception courtyard appearing in need of renovation. The club house was actually closed with just a TT table lying unused in the verandah. Maybe this was because its not really the tourist season right now! The children's play area is a strict no-no, probably not used or maintained for a long time and we would never let sou son off there. As far as the service was concerned it is an unpretentious and quiet place with polite and helpful staff, although the room-service often tends to be quite slow, especially in the evenings when the restaurant gets more customers.

The high point of the resort is the food - whether breakfast, lunch or dinner - everything they serve is delicious! My only apprehension while booking 3 days here was whether we would get food palatable to our north Indian and Konkani tastes, the usual problem with small and mid-sized resorts in this area. But we tried north Indian, south Indian, Chinese and continental food, and they never disappointed. And since we can say this about the veg food, I am sure the non-veg and sea food they serve must be excellent too. The serving time is a little on the longer side though and they never seem to remember whether you are an in-house guest or not, but otherwise there are no complaints from our side. Though we never used their bar, we did have a peep inside and it seemed, well, quaint with nothing much to show off. I did feel though that drinks (even beer) were being over charged for, considering the overall state of the bar & restaurant.

All said and done, we would definitely rate this small place highly and suggest this place to anyone near Mangalore looking for a quiet getaway for a couple of days, especially when with family and kids. The lack of a safe beach and not many activities means that anything more than three days will become boring. If having a idyllic and quiet time looking at the turbulent sea at sunset is your thing, this is the place for it!

I visited this resort in March 2014 with a friend and found this place to be calm, quiet and soothing.
Staff is co-operative and polite, specially at the bar and the courtyard. Its located a bit outside of Mangalore but still its not completely isolated. Room was quite clean and nice. i have uploaded pics as well, please check. Entire property has scope of improvement, specially garden are.

In breakfast, we had south-indian cuisine and it was amazing. At bar, snacks served were also really good and they have nice variety of drinks, at reasonable rates. In Dinner, North Indian dishes were average, not that great. Also the beach behind resort is crowded.

Would suggest this place to anyone who is visiting Mangalore.

I have been staying at Summer Sands for my last three trips to Mangalore. Its an awesome property, in wilderness, away from the chaos of the town. The beach is very tranquil and not many people are seen. Live band by the sea on weekends makes it a real treat to come here and unwind! Highly recommended!
