“Disappointing! don't go by the name”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 6, 2012

I had a very disappointing experinece with this hotel. I was expecting good service as it's part of the Taj's chain.
* I had booked in advance with a note that I'd need a double bed. I found to single beds. They managed to join those on request.
* I had read on Wikitravel, that you persistently get bad fish odour and it's a smelly place. I ignored that at my own pain. The old port is nearby and you feel like staying in a koli-wada

The restaurant and the food and breakfast was very good though. The only plus point.

Very good value for money. The check in counter helped us with early check in and the staff were very helpful. The room was very clean and well arranged. Good breakfast and excellent service.

The view from room 506 was spectacular. Housekeeping was very friendly and the hotel conformed to the high standards of the Taj group.

Room Tip: The room 506 afforded a spectacular view of the ocean and the Mangalore river.

Stayed here for two nights in Aug-2012. It was a pleasant stay. The hotel is centrally located near the business as well as shopping areas. So it was convenient for us.
The checkin procedure was smooth and they had us on file and we were in our rooms in 10-15 mins at the most. The regular rooms are of reasonable size and are more than enough for a couple for a few nights. In case you are traveling with a child then with an extra bed it can get cramped. However, if you plan to spend most of your time outside then it doesnt matter at all. The bathrooms were clean, neat and looked new as well. Overall no complaints in this department.
The restaurants here are small and may not be able to accommodate a lot of guests and this was the only concern. However, we usually went for food during off hours so it was again not a big deal for us. the only concern was that the hotel bar was utterly dry! They had almost nothing to offer other than some excuse as to why it was not stocked!

The only other note I would make is that the property itself is very old and is near the port. So when you are outside the hotel there is a lingering smell of dried fish (?). The elevators in the hotel are also very old.

All said and done, will I stay here again? Definitely!

This was my second visit to this hotel and I enjoyed my stay here. The staff are extremely courteous, warm and affable. It was a short stay - only for a night. Nevertheless, it was memorable. When I requested for a late check-out, they agreed readily, probably being a weekend.

Few negatives are, when you step out of the hotel, you are greeted by smell of dry fish. In the baths, hot water was lukewarm. The hotel is a bit old and hence could get a musty smell inside the hotel and the rooms...

But, the lobby and restaurants are all done up newly and look welcoming.

Room Tip: Ask for a higher floor, so you would get sea view.

Stayed in The Gateway for 2 days on 17th and 18th August on an official trip. When I think of the stay, its the hospitality of the staff that comes to my mind. It was excellent. Next comes the dinner I had at the newly renovated Cardamom restaurant. It was a pleasant experience. Though felt the starter suggested by the waiter to be average, the main course (rice and anjal fish curry) was very good and the bebinca was excellent as a dessert. Bebinca has become one of my favorite dessert now. Even the buffet breakfasts was above average. Location of the hotel is also good. Right at the City center but in a road where there is less traffic. Few improvements needed are - they need to renovate the lifts. The lifts are very old. Locking system in rooms need to be changed. Can provide a locker in the room. Also provide some popular regional channels - especially tamil. Also in general, I have found the video quality to be very poor in most of the hotels and The Gateway is no exception. Having said the pros and cons, I will seriously consider Gateway if I visit Mangalore next time.

I visited this place in Sep 2011, Was a fairly good place to stay, Good Amenities, Food was good but can definitely improve especially in varities.

Guess The Value for Money is why i would choose it, however the location is not so great & the hotel looks a little old.

An Overhaul of this place & addition of some new trendy designs should put this place back on track.

A nice decent hotel with courteous staff. Food is good and value for money with a central location. I had a view of the water from my room 514. I will come back but only after I check some other hotels.

Room Tip: Come here for the services and the warm smiles. The hotel staff are so caring and helpful. Integrity...
