“Excellent Property far from the madding crowds”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 5, 2013

It is a lovely property just outside the city and hence retains the natural charm - the cottages are lovely with a great view , though they could do with a refurbishing of the room and the toilets . The property offers a very relaxed outlook and one can put their feet up and take in the nature - the food is excellent and the local cuisine was just too good specially the Biryani !! The health club if I can call it so is in shambles and clearly needs an urgent makeover . Chikmagalur offers some great places to visit in the vicinity - waterfalls , ancient temples , forest reserves , coffee plantations - one can get some great coffee and spices from the local market too.

Room Tip: Choose a cottage at a higher level as it would give you a great view of the vast expanse of trees. P...

Stayed here over a long weekend. The hotel was generally well maintained. It's a good base to explore in and around Chikamagalur. We were on the ground floor with a garden area outside, which was great for the kids (2 year old toddlers). The hotel also has a children's play area, and there's a magician (not employed by the hotel) who performs in the evenings. The restaurant staff at the Gateway All Day restaurant went out of their way to cook something appropriate for the toddlers. While on the food, the buffet lunch and dinner have a reasonable spread and good value. The restaurant is truly "all day" and the evening snacks were perfect for the weather! The hotel staff were very friendly, and provided some helpful tips for going around town. Overall, this made for a memorable stay - especially good for the kids!

It is the extremely poor maintenance and pathetic service that kills the beauty of the otherwise extremely beautiful place to be. They have over 35 variants of flowers, all blooming and a beautiful sunset view. I would still be inclined to recommend one night's stay for the sheer quaint charm of the place. And don't leave the door-size windows open for your snake friends might pay you an unannounced visit!

Stayed here in the recent long weekend. The hotel and property in general is pretty well maintained and everything is neat and clean. The staff was very friendly. We stayed at the hotel the whole time except for a short trip to the town (which is 4 kms away). The food was excellent, my son loved the deserts. We found the place extremely relaxing and there are some activities like cycling, carroms, TT etc to keep you engaged. They have a nice Spa as well and an amazing pool.

Room Tip: Select the garden view standard rooms facing the hotel entrance else there could some noise from the...

We stayed there for one night and were given a late check out. We had taken the all meals plan.
So we were there for the entire day.

Good points:
Weather: was spectacular since it was the rainy season.
View: was amazing, we had the pool view room.
Spa: The therapists were really good and the trip to the spa was enjoyable.
Rooms: the rooms were large enough and is well maintained, but is a little rough around the edges, maybe cos of the weather or its an old property.
I even checked out another cottage type room which had a double bed and a single bed and was very spacious.
Staff: They were courteous and most helpful.
Food: Was ok. There was some great karnataka style biryani.

Can do better points:
Staff: They are understaffed. We requested for bath towels, we dint get it on time.
There are no bell boys and the hotel maintainance staff and the security guy is handling your luggage.

Food: None of the taj properties in south india have decent north indian food. the dal makhni was really bad.
I dont know why the desserts were never refilled. They had a huge group staying at the hotel and there were a lot of kids. The kids start their meals early and once the kids finished all the pastries, they were never refilled.

I dont mind the negative points as this was a memorable trip.
I had a great time at the hotel mainly cos I was with my family and my dear nephew after a long time.

Truly Amazing stay!!! Well managed place and has everything what you crave for relaxing weekend gateway.

We started Saturday Morning around 8:00 am from Bangalore. We started slowly - set trip count to 0. First one hour we spend near bangalore only for b'fast, petrol and all. After spending enough time, we moved toward Hasan.

What a peaceful way it is!!! If you ignore 20-30 km stretch where road work was on + pass through busy area and all, it was awesome drive. It was drizzling, raining, sun shine, everything. B'ful weather/scenery force us to stop our vehicle and enjoy surrounding nature.

After that many halt/delay also, we reach at around 1:00 pm at The Gateway Hotel. It was exactly 255km from my home to hotel. As expected, without any hurdle, with warm welcome we got our room, adjacent to swimming pool.

All good at hotel, From location to room, and from food to facilities. Quick service. No delay at all whatsoever.

Only bad thing was because of continuous rain, Forests + Waterfall drive was not possible. We just managed to go Mullayangiri hills, The highest peak in Karnataka. Too foggy and too windy. Whatever it was, it was at its best. We had good fun there.

so our schedule was like this:

Saturday : reach half day + roam around City
Sunday : first half Mullayangiri peak + full evening in Swimming pull (this was best part, believe me :) )
Monday : after b'fast started for Mysore. Spend full evening at Brindavan Garden, Started from there around 8:00pm and reach home by 11:30 with stay for lunch + small shops

But, whoever wants to enjoy more can plan trip in between October to February. As its peak season and you can enjoy more of chickmanglur :)

stayed last weekend 2N/3D with friends and family. let me start with that I am big fan of Taj hotel - everytime I have stayed with them have come back with pleasant memories bcoz of the effort taken to make the holiday special. I have stayed in various Taj properties in last 12 months across Rajasthan, Karnataka, Tamilnadu and Kerela. So I went there with lot of expectation based on past experience and what I found completely missing was Taj hospitality where hotel staff is trying to make your stay memorable by doing small things.

Nice large rooms, well maintained property view is good from the cottage room. We had booked 3 rooms - they ensured that all of them are together, rooms are decent size, rooms have a open sit out which is very nice and relaxing ( watch out for Monkeys). Large bathrooms with good quality (Biotique) toiletries - in general very clean - they were in addition providing twice cleaning services.

Is you are travelling with elderly folks look for rooms closer to the reception - some of the cottages may require a bit of walking/climbing which we were perfectly fine with.

there is a activity room with a carom, ping pong and they have magic shows for kids in the eve. Swimming pool is nice - except that if you don't mind some dried leaves and maybe frogs ( I was not bothered as this is rainy season)

Not so good:

Restaurants:
They are seriously under staffed in the restaurant and hence the service is really bad. It is really hard to see Taj smiles from servers, captain - buffets options are average and local food is kind of missing from menu. In general really poor service quality, limited options and very average food. You have to ask for things multiple times before you get it.

We reached on Friday and had the buffet for both lunch and dinner and we were so disappointed that we were seriously thinking of eating out even though lunch was included in our room rate. Saturday lunch started bad with papads served were either soggy or not roasted - basically not edible. we summoned the cook and that changed the experience of rest of the meal. They made some Akki roti and local palyas we really enjoyed our meal after the bad start.

In general very ordinary food, very little choice in buffet and the staff definitely need to do something about the smile.

Bar

again the similar problem as restaurant, bartender is missing most of time. Bar setting/atmosphere is definitely not up to mark for a Taj hotel and for that matter any hotel of this tier . Avoid mixed drinks - they are bad. Again when you give feedback they change it but this is definitely not their forte.

Pool

too much chlorine, stays with you forever. Every time you go there you have keep asking for towels and they take forever to bring them. Not much thought has been given that people would sit and relax near pool.

overall - I do think I would be going back to this place again, again as I did not bring back any 'aha' moment from the stay perspective.

Room Tip: Cottages on the upper level have good views - if travelling with elderly folks take a room closer to...
