“Its all about the location ...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 27, 2013

I usually stay at the Vivanta at the Trinity Circle but for a change decided to try out the Gateway Hotel. Its all about the location ... fantastic is one word for it. Right at the crossing of Brigade Road and Residency Road, this is a 'less' frill version of the Vivanta - with almost matching quality of comfort in rooms. Quality of amenities do vary and I did not get the opportunity to try out the restaurant or gym so will update that later.

As I said, the rooms are as spacious and comfortable ... reflecting Taj's efficiency and philosophy I guess. A warm welcome, bouquet of flowers in the room ... what more can you ask for.

About the locations, it rocks. For a lone traveler, it beats the Vivanta anyday. Just get our and turn left - you have the most happening area of Bangalore at your disposal. Turn right, and you hit select pubs, ice cream parlors and about 5 mins walk - the Garuda Mall. Had my dinner at Kobe's there and a short walk back - you are in a quiet world of your own. Try it out - you wont be disappointed.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 18, 2013

I have stayed at this hotel twice, and would recommend it for both business and vacation travel.

First the room. The quality of the rooms are fairly good. The furniture is not new but in good condition - not threadbare or worn out. There are sufficient power outlets (accepting US style plugs) for charging all your gadgets. The desk is at odd angle but I didn't use it. There's a single seater sofa and footstool. The bed was comfortable, and the AC can actually be cranked down to make the room cold for a good night's sleep. The bathroom is excellent with quality fixtures. The shower has good water pressure and the water can be made nice and hot. Drawbacks: there is no tub in the bathroom and the room is missing a chest of drawers which would be handly for a traveller staying for multiple days (there is a closet with shelves which is not as convenient).

Restaurants - This is the BIG BIG attraction of the hotel. Karavalli is an outstanding restaurant, and staying in the hotel makes it real easy to saunter down for a top notch dinner. I've eaten here 3 times and have had an outstanding meal each time. The last time I dined alone and the guy in charge was kind enough to do multiple half plates so I could sample a wider set of the menu. The breakfast room on the main floor also serves an excellent breakfast buffet - I must admit however I stuck to the Indian breakfast as a novelty item. The staff is very accomodating and will cook up custom breakfasts for you if you know what you want.

Location - another big attraction. There's lots of shopping (both upscale and basic) within a short walking distance. The hotel is very helpful in providing directions and suggestions. On one visit I arrived sans luggage and was able to buy clothes and toiletries for my trip within walking distance. There are several local dives (bars and restaurants) for the more adventurous traveller. There is even a metro station nearby.

Downsides - not much. The free wireless is dog slow and after a day I ended up paying for upgraded wireless (which was fast enough to do a tele call back to the US). There is a disco of some sort on the main floor with thumping music in the evenings - fortunately it does not seem to percolate upwards into the rooms. That's about it.

The staff is uniformly courteous and helpful - at both restaurants and at the front desk. Overall a stay here is a very pleasant experience.

The Gateway is a great option if you want to be located close to the city centre. The common amenities of the hotel such as the lobby, restaurants etc have been upgraded. However, the rooms are still a bit tired and in need of an update. The staff are excellent and the service is typical of Taj standards.

We took 2 rooms for 1 day for a meeting of old friends who all happened to be in the city together after many years. We took one suite and one executive room. The rooms are clean and well appointed with nice fittings. The fittings are modern and contemporary. The room service was excellent and the staff were very responsive when we wanted their help to connect devices to the TV etc. The excellent location is a very major factor. The breakfast spread was good and the restaurant staff were eager to please by bringing hot and customised options to the table.

Nice hotel, great Taj standards, conveniently located just off M. G. Road. Rooms are small but ok for single business travellers. However they require to be upgraded as compared to newer hotels. The Karavelli restaurant has maintained it's high standards for coastal and south Indian cuisine over the years. The new menu is exhaustive.

the big plus is the location.......close to the business area and the shopping on Brigade Street which is a short walk away. The lunch in the coffeee shop is very nice and so is the breakfast. Unfortunately the South Indian fish restaurant was closed for lunch. The rooms are well appointed, spacious and airy. For the price, a recomendable hote.

Room Tip: understand that all rooms are of same type and good quality
