“Beautiful place located away from the city”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 17, 2013

The rooms are very good, food excellent, staff courteous. Though, rates are on the higher side, but you won't feel the pinch after your stay here. Unlike "Jamal Resort, Srinagar" where you feel as if your pocket has been picked or you have been looted by hooligans.
I really appreciate, that they have preserved & maintained the greenery around the place. Kids will enjoy.

I chose this hotel over others in Leh going by the reviews here and I was not disappointed, rather I was delighted with the place.

Getting a reservation done was a bit of a pain as I had to call first then send an e-mail and deposit money via a bank transfer. But, in the end it was worth it.

Check in was put off till I went up to the room and had freshened up. In that sense, this is less like a hotel and more like someone's home, which it is in a manner of speaking. The hotel is an extension of the owners' home set in sprawling grounds with a nice lawn and orchards. In fact I asked if I could have some of the apricots on the trees on the grounds for dessert and got them!

I was given a room on the first floor, at the top of the stairs there is a nice lounge with large windows to let the sun in - it must be a nice place when it is cold but since it was pleasantly warm, the nice balcony in front of the rooms was the best place to sit. The room itself is spacious, well furnished and cosy. The bathroom is well laid out and clean. There is a little area at the back which was great to store stuff and dry clothes which needed to be washed after 10 days on the road :-).

The place is owned by a distinguished couple who run a tight ship. The staff are a bit shy but friendly and extremely hard working. They go out of their way to make things comfortable for guests. It was a pleasure to sit out in the balcony and sip the excellent ginger tea.

I stayed here at the fag end of the season so there was no crowd. I am thankful for that as one day a party of three families arrived and shattered the peace and quiet. Most of the time, there was only one or two other guests so the kitchen was downsized and instead of a buffet one got set menu meals which suited me fine as the food was always fresh and piping hot.

There is no place to park inside the grounds but there is plenty of parking just outside and it is safe as the watchmen at the gate keep an eye on the car. In any case, the hotel is outside town and there are no neighbouring buildings. Since I was leaving early in the morning, they packed a breakfast on the last day which was enough for breakfast & lunch!

I called again last week for a room in May this year and followed up with a mail. The response was in keeping with the character of the place "We will be happy to hold your room. There is no need for advance payment".

I am looking forward to staying here again.

the feel of hotel is not just the rooms, its owners mr and mrs norbu are great hosts and extended wonderful hospitality on my stay at the hotel. thanks to Mr wanchuk , the manager at reception with his team which stays in campus, all went smooth for a lot of loud people like us. i had stayed in normal room and suite too, all were comfortable and cozy.the hotel should not be compared with any downtown or market hotel, as its a lil' away from market ( free drop in car is always offered) and is not just typical business hotel. the hotel is quiet and located 5 -8 min away from the apt. the staff is close to apt authorities and can be very help at times for check in at srinagar. over all - a great place to relax!

Room Tip: rooms are facing the lawns (most of them) spend time reading a book on hammock on a sunny day ..Mr w...

We were shocked to read this totally unfair review of Shambhala as we too were staying in this lovely hotel at the time the Dutch family checked in and actually heard them shouting at the counter staff over some minor delay caused by reservation mix-up.When the lady -owner turned up to inquire, they started pressing that a courtesy pick-up from town should also be given in addition to the free-drop that the hotel provides in its car and when this was refused by her on the grounds that it causes too many delays this seemed to inrage them further.

As we had already spent a few pleasant days in the hotel and knew it was a short 15 minutes walk downhill from town - centre to the hotel and only cost a 150Rs by taxi anyway,we felt like interceding on her behalf but for the temper of these guests !!!We felt really guilty about not speaking- up .We too were told when we checked - in that it is hotel policy that free - drop to town is given any time as guest desires which was fine with us as a return pick up with a full hotel would not have gone smoothly .

We would once more like to thank all the staff of the hotel for making our sray in Ladakh such a memorable and happy one and also to our friends who directed us to this hidden Paradise.

The list of negatives is by no means complete:

-The receptionist could not find our booking and kept requesting a "voucher'. After 10 minutes the owner appeared and translated for us. We were appointed 3 sad looking rooms.
-We arrived around 2pm after a morning rafting hungry. Although the notice board lists the lunch/ dinner times there was not enough food for us. The bar snacks took more than 1 hour to arrive to our table.
-The hotel provides a drop-off service into the centre off Leh - read carefully - drop off, not pick up. We agreed a pick up with the hotel driver, needless to say he did not turn up. After waiting for 30 minutes we decided to take a taxi back.
The main problem was not the misunderstanding with the driver but the attitude of the owner after we mentioned the incident. Rude and unprofessional.
-The rooms have very thin walls. The early morning mobile calls from fellow guest where clearly audible as was the hoovering at 7 am.
-The rooms have no view.
-Although Wifi is offered it did not work for the duration of our stay.
- The garden is overlooked by all rooms so absolutely no sense of privacy.
- Painting of the bannister was undertaken during our visit making the whole place smell of paint. I am sure their off season is long enough to incorporate maintenance time.

The staff was helpful, I mainly felt sorry for them.

On day 2 we stayed in Leh as long as possible so we did not have to go back to the hotel.

If you like a different stay in Ladakh, great food try Ladakh Sarai.

First trip to Leh. We stayed for two weeks in total at the Shambhala Hotel, with a 5-day break to visit Zanskar - it was a very consistently pleasant experience, with all the staff going the extra mile to provide whatever we needed.

Our rooms were cozy, clean and quiet and the upstairs veranda is the best place to relax - ask for rooms 13 to 15. Or else the suite, one floor up with a heavenly view and great light. There is a charming upstairs lounge, a garden with tall trees, lots of flowers and several hammocks ... and delicious evening BBQs. The food was tasty and healthy, the staff very kind and resourceful.

The distance to town is not a problem, it's an easy walk and the hotel will send you in a car on request. There are very pleasant walks in the vicinity of the hotel, with paths along a stream, or between pretty houses set in gardens and small vegetable plots.

The Wifi was fixed it so that we could work in our rooms (the furthest from the router) and the times we didn't have it, it seems no one in Leh had it either - a system server failure. Power can be problematic as Leh seems to have shortages at all hours. The hotel generator always works in the evening, but in daytime, it would also be started if we asked for it - we were able to watch some of the Olympics ... If you are getting up early, best to warn the staff that you will need light (and maybe breakfast) at a particular time. If I ever go back to Leh, Shambhala is my choice !!

Room Tip: Ask for 13 for your own veranda corner ... or the suite.
