“Ancient oil paintings and Statues are marvelous”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 20, 2013

This is one of the best monasteries I have visited in the Ladakh region located on a bank of a river with panoramic views ....Apple and apricot trees flogging the courtyard ....Amazing oil paintings and tall Buddha statues quite literally steal your heart...

“Mother nature in its true colour”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 10, 2013

The surrounding is excellent with river flowing along the line of the Monastery. Instead of going into monastery we preferred to stay outside more. It is a group of many small temples with the main temple in the center.

Lies in the barren mountain valley of river Indus.Monasteries out in Alchi are fine examples of traditional Tibetan architecture.Solid square structures with flat roofs is a landmark of Buddhist art and architecture .

“Treasure Chest of Traditional Art & Culture”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 4, 2013

Alchi Monastery is one of the oldest gompa of Ladakh which falls in Sham Valley Sector. We will recommend this place to all of you because of its artistic treasures. You must visit the Sumtsek Temple, Vairocana Temple, Lo Tsawa Temple, Manjushree Temple, Kangyur Temple with Stupas, Monk Cells etc. Beautiful wood carving arts, huge Tibetan Styled models of Buddha, Manjushree, historic wall paintings of Buddha's teachings within a very calm, quite, pristine ambiance made Alchi more valuable.

Entry Fee: Rs.20 for domestic & Rs.50 for foreign guests. Can stay there also. Home stay options are also available. Camera is strictly not allowed inside the temples. Outside photography allowed. Require 2-3 Hours for a full visit.

The monastery is under supervision of Head Lama, Likir Monastery. Telephone: 01982 - 227140 / 253419. Email: likirmonasteryl@yahoo.in

We visiter on the last week of August when it was very hot. Just out of the monastery campus you will find stalls of handicrafts showcased by local people. You can buy Wooden Masks, Stone Jewellery, Brass/Bell Metal Crafts from there. 2 - 3 small shops are there near the parking lot where you can avail snacks & others.
