“Nothing like a Shikara ride at Dal”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 9, 2013

A shikara ride at Dal Lake is the best option at Srinagar, the cost is Rs 400/- for an hour. You can either opt for a ride around the Nehru Park and floating market which is a photographers delight and you can catch the life around Dal in your camera lens or you can opt for a more serene and peaceful ride towards Char Chinar side. We did both on 2 separate days and loved both. The various sellers pulling their shikara alongside your shikara to sell various items (jewellery, flowers, vegetables, bhutta (corn/maize), saffron, etc.,) can be irritating, specially when you want to enjoy the peace and beauty without any disturbance. You can also get your photos clicked in Kashmiri dress and its ready for you after your ride.

Its good that rates have been fixed and are mentioned on boards at all ghats, this removes the haggling nuisance.

You can ask your shikara wala to give you history of Dal and places around and a little bit about their life and struggle.

Kudos to J&K government for putting in efforts to keep the Dal clean. Wish the tourists could learn and not litter the lake and its banks.

Tip: The area towards Dal Gate is very crowded, hence suggestion is to take a shikara from a Ghat further up north. Avoid weekends and evenings if you hate crowds.

“Romantic evening on the Dal Lake”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 8, 2013

A shikara ride on the Dal Lake is very relaxing especially in the evenings when the sun is about to set. They charge you based on the number of points you want to see on the lake- Mission Kashmir houseboat, floating market, Nehru Park, Lotus garden etc.
There is nothing special about these points but the entire experience of the Shikara is worth it.
Take a shikara from Ghat 11 to 16 since that is where the lake view is best with the fountain and trees in the background.
Also, if you are staying in the houseboat, you may find many people coming to you with various goodies like jewelry, shawls, kesar etc saying that this is made here and is orignal etc..
Do not buy anything from them. They are highly overpriced goods and not of the quality that is told by these sellers. Do not buy Kesar at all from Dal Lake. (If you want to buy kesar, buy it from Pampor district on your way to Pahalgam. This is where it is cultivated and best rate is given here.)
Even while you are on your shikara ride, your boat rider will take you to one or two shops in the floating market which are highly over-priced. I would recommend not to buy anything from there.
At the most, you can buy kahwa from the floating boats that sell food and drinks and enjoy your ride on the shikara.

Also, government rates are put up on the boards outside the ghat for the Shikara ride. But, the boatman will tell you that if you take government rate, he will ride the boat slow and not show all the points. Please bargain hard on the rate and make sure that he shows all the points that have been promised to you.
We paid Rs. 1000 for a shikara for 1.5 hours and he showed us all the points mentioned on the government board.
Avoid going in the afternoon when it is very over-crowded and hot.
Early morning and late evening is best recommended!

“dirty and overcrowded”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 7, 2013

the dal lake has lost it's charm .. its too overcrowded with vendors .. too dirty .. never opt to stay on a houseboat .. however a short visit thru the floating market in shikaras is a must to complete the kashmir visit.

“Good Lake”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 7, 2013

Shikara ride is really refreshing in the Dal lake. You may take 1- 2 hours ride and enjoy away from the crowd of Srinagar. At some places the lake is dirty. In summers, it is pleasant to go either early morning or in the evening as day time is hot. You can enjoy Kashmiri Kehwa and hot pakora's during the shikara ride. You can also enjoy shopping while in the shikara.

Avoid going to the lake on week ends as there is a maddening crowd of local residents and the place is full.
