I have used tripadvisor to find hotels for a long time but nevre felt the need to contribute any review. That notion had changed after I encountered Swasno Palace. The world must know my experience so my mistake will not be repeated.
First of all, I always stay at 4~5 star properties around the world, mostly Regent, Shangaria, W Hotel, Westin, Sheraton, Hilton, and Inter-Continental. However, this trip to India was not arranged by myself, but an inexperienced agent of mine, so unfortunately I got to meet Swasno Palace.
Price: I was told that the rate was $70 USD a night. This price level is comprable to Motel Six or Super 8 in United States (where I reside). You tihnk in India, for the same price, you could get much better accomodation. How wrong was I! The worst motel six or Super 8 in States would seem heavenly compared to Swasno. Yes, even if you go to the middle of ghetto in Baltimore and check into a Super 8 with a hooker you would get a better room than Swasno Palace.
Exterior: First of all, the road surrounding Swasno Palace does not deserve to be called "road." They are no more than pot-hole filled dirty. Where it is not filled with pothole, it is covered with rocks or exposed barbwire. The exterior of the hotel itself is as ugly as it gets. It resembles a cheap restaurant/housing than a lodging.
Basic Needs of Humanity: Before I talk about the room, let's talk about basic needs such as sanitation, water, electricity. You think when you pay $70 USD a night you will get these? Well, how wrong was I! The electricity goes off hourly at this hotel. When it comes back on, spark will come out of the "voltage regulator" box that sits next to the air conditioning unit. Hot water frequently runs out. Towels are dirty with black or dark marking all over it, as if it had been used to wipe floor or machinaries. Blood stain is visible on bed sheet. Flies congregate over breakfast tray. Dead roaches and insects visible on bathroom floor.
Room: Tile floor. Crowded. Noisy AC unit. (It sounds like a drum filled with small rocks and sand is rolling over a bumpy hill.) Dirty and worn furniture. The mattress is uncomfortable. Sheet is not long enough to cover the mattress. The mattress itself is very short, my legs will exceed the edge of it, even though I am only 5"11'.
Service: Frequently hotel staff will unlock my door and enter my room without knocking or warning. When he found out that I dead-bolted the door, he would start buzzing the door. Then I had to yelled at him, "Don't come in!" This had happened three times between 9am to 6pm. Besides that, I didn't expereince any other service. In fact, I have turned into a "combat hermit mode." I just drink bottle water, eat packaged food, spray bug repellent on my body, and hide indoor, waiting for my stay in this God foresaken hotel to be over.
