Four of us in our party stayed in Sonnesta Inns for 8 nights from 3rd to 11 December 2012. Sonnesta Inns in Candolim, Goa is a medium sized clean and pleasant hotel with very nice grounds, medium sized pool and clean rooms. The hotel was fairly quiet and ambience was good for those who wish to relax but not the place for those who are looking for in-hotel activities throughout the day. It was under 5 minutes stroll to Candolim beach through the hotel's own ground. The reservation staff Colinda responded very promptly to our querries from the UK before we went to Goa. Pity that we could not see her personally when we were there as Colinda was busy. Staff were generally pleasant, polite and helpful. The pool side staff (Judas and his colleague whose name I cannot remember) were very helpful and serious about their duties. Breakfast was basic and not as extensive as you would find in a Spanish hotel but quite enough to start the day with. We did not have lunch in the hotel but they would bring snacks and drinks by the pool side if you asked for it. The dinner in the restaurant was very good and reasonably priced but with limited choice. The entertainment was limited but we enjoyed dancing to the live music. Unfortunately this is provided only once a week with Karoke and some folk dancing on other nights which are just OK.
Now some issues with room for improvement that the hotel management might want to pay attention to.
The service at dinner in the restaurant and out in the garden was poor. On the BBQ night, the fish platter that was fairly expensive did not include the tiger prawns contrary to what the man at the BBQ counter had said. We had to take a tough stance by sending the food back before the manager reluctantly agreed to add tiger prawns to the platter. On another night, the waiter missed out the order for one member of our party, then said they could cook it within 10 minutes, then informed us after 30 minutes that they could not supply it at all and finally when they provided an alternative dish (by which time rest of us in the group had finished eating our meals) it had hair in it. That must have been the lowest point of our stay in the hotel. There were ants in our bathroom and the the toilet commode was loose but these were dealt with promptly when we brought them to the attention of the hotel staff. The hotel also provided us (by courtesy of our booking agents) with a couple of complimentary meal vouchers which the waiters did not honour as they did not know anything about them and when we brought to the attention of the front desk staff including the duty manager, they did not want to deduct the amount from our final bill either, till we put our foot down. This left us with a bit of sour taste in our mouth just before leaving Goa. Another service the hotel could do with providing is a courtesy room to change and freshen up for those who leave late in the day after having vacated their rooms at 11 AM.
In spite of the little hiccups described above, we would certainly recommend the hotel to others and would go back there ourselves if we went back to Goa again.
Some tips - The souvnier shops outside the hotel are expensive and even after a hard bargain you will end up paying a lot more. The general store which comes first on the right when you turn left out side the hotel is a rip off, charging 75 rupees for a can of Kingfisher beer that you could buy for 45 rupees from other shops on the main road.
The hotel staff are not fully gend up on advice about sight seeing. But they did tell us about a bus tour of south and north Goa that was reasonably OK and cheaper than hiring the taxi.
Soumen's kitchen is a restaurant about 15 minutes walk from the hotel and serves good food but rather expensive.
1st floor rooms are probably better from point of view of being difficult for the insects etc to cre...
