“Bad budget accommodation”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed May 13, 2008

If we had to give advice it would be not to stay here in Don Hill Beach Resort.

Room was basic with no air conditioning (and in April when we stayed here that is not a good thing!!). Room was not cleaned or towels changed for 3 days of our stay. We would not normally complain about the towels, but the weather was so hot and sticky, they would not even dry over night.

Pool area was small and not particularly nice (even thought the water was cooler than the sea)!!!

Breakfast was included, but was tea and toast only.

The building, particularly at the back, was in dire need of decoration.

Overall, not a great stay, and not recommended.

Arrived at Donhill about 9.30 am following a surprise trip to Manchester Airport courtesy of Monarch. Initial thoughts were 'I don't like this' But it didn't take long to adjust to this new world. The room was small and very basic but comfortable and a place to sleep. Our room was at the back of the hotel and reasonably quiet. The staff were always willing to help and there was always someone about to tend to your needs. Rooms are cleaned every day (If you leave your key, the managment don't let the staff have a master key) even if you don,t go out until after lunch. Food at the hotel is of a very good quality except for the complimentary breakfast which consisted of two slices of toast (Normally Chewy) a small glass of juice and a bowl of flakes. For a very reasonable price omlettes are available and the fruit salad is great. Sam, behind the bar will look after you inthe evenings under the watchful eyes of Andy and Michael. Peter will teach you a word or two that you won't find in the guide books. The pool is surrounded by walls and does not get a breeze but a great place to cool off after being on the beach for the day. We used Angela's Dolphin Inn, the first shack you get to when you walk to the beach. we were looked after very well by Shanker and Abbi. Here I recommend the Haka Noodles, Seafood fried rice and toasted sandwiches. Other places to eat are The Curry House (Does what it says on the tin) Flambee's for a great sizzler, Fisherman's Cove in the centre of Candolim and Inferno's on Candolim Beach road. If you want a Fan-Tas-Tic steak then The Spice Garden is the place to go. Looks like a carpark with tables but the steak is to die for. Newtons supermarket is airconditioned and prices are fixed but you can get most of what you want at good prices. Next time we're on Goa This hotel and Candolim are on the list of places we definitely want to visit. Not Five Star Luxury but Definitely a Five Star Service

This was our third time to Goa, and we go with an open, laid back mind.
Don Hill was really clean and the rooms were immaculate, staff were great and bar staff in particular really looked after us.
I love Candolim and the location of the hotel was super.
My only gripe was the power cuts.
We go to Goa expecting a daily power cut, it normally lasts for 10 mins and then the back up generator kicks in - not in Don Hill - no back up generator.
13 hour power cut the night before Christmas eve managed to rob me of sleep - it was too hot! It actually turned out to be a hotel problem rather than a street problem.
Daily power cuts followed, varying betwen 30 mins and 6 hours.
After New Year - everything was hunky dorey, and we were told by our (rather useless) Airtours rep that it was all the christmas lights that were causing the power cuts.
Power cuts aside - we had a fantastic 3 weeks in Goa, seeing the same people we made friends with last year.
Candolim is fantastic if you are a happy - go - lucky open minded person, if you are looking for 5 star luxury - its not the place for you.
We took MP3 players this year for the kids on the beach and the look on their faces when we gave them to them was priceless. The memories I take home from Goa keep me sane until the next time I go back. It really is an amazing, cheap place.
Our favourite place to eat was Bom Successo - really fantastic food, clean kitchens and great karaoke nights. Dominic and Eric who run it are lovely and Ajeet - our waiter couldnt do enough for us.
We spent daytime in Rams shack on the beach - we love the people and the kids there. Loads of work going on with the River Princess although the shack owners reckon they will be working on it for at least another 2 years.
Our best night of the holiday was New Years eve - spent on Candolim beach with all the friends we have made over the last 3 years. Fireworks are amazing and everyone was so happy.
This is the only place in the world I have ever been where I actually sit on the beach crying on the last day, because I do not want to come home. We love Candolim and the power cuts didnt ruin our holiday, although they were annoying.
We will deffinately be back next year - and I would stop in Don Hill again - come January onwards, avoiding all the Christmas lights causing the lengthy power cuts.

My wife & I had eaten & drunk here a few times over the years but this was the first time we stayed there,Proper matressess! What a joy.Excellent food & very good service. Also very clean , bedrooms cleaned every day . We did have the next door's hotel pet rat pass through the bar area every night but he didn't stop to chat!!It's at the far end of candolim so the noise is minimal but taxies are so cheap ( or walk )A holiday can be spoiled by other guests but with one exception, all the guests were great & full of fun.£5 a night. What more do you want ?. Ask for Andy when you get there,he's a big Man U fan. Bruno the chef works wonders in the galley. We had a tropical storm for over 6 hours on our 2nd night from 1700 to going on midnight & the bar staff worked wonders keeping us supplied in the candlelight. The bar was outside & we were inside !! Getting wet if you know what I mean. That was the mother of all storms. i thought of our parents in the Blitz!!!

This is my third trip to North Goa, the Don Hill is an excellent budget hotel, far better than the two previous hotels I have stayed in. I had a large room with a balcony, rooms cleaned every day, fresh towels every two days, no bugs.
Pool area secluded and clean, beach 5 mins walk.
Situated at the far end of Candolim so not as manic as Calengute or Baga.
I have added some room pictures as the only pictures I could find on the web were a side view of the hotel and a picture of the pool area. Please note bathroom picture not that appealing but far better than other hotels at this price I have stayed in.

Good basic 2 star hotel. Rooms spacious and very clean. Furniture and decoration in need of modernisation. No view from balconies or small pool. Good Food. Friendly staff but some can be a bit pushy for tips and get you to eat and drink at the hotel.
Air conditioning only on upgrade. Fridge costs £1 a day.

Favourite restaurants - Moonlight, Ceclia's, Inferno, Stonehouse, Midas Touch. Also After seven when not busy as service can be very slow.

Sea at candolim can be very rough. Coco beach destroyed by Tsunami. Travel Northe to Mandrem for good beach with shallow waters.

Be aware shacks may open late in November due to licences not being issued. Still not open on 18th November.

Don Hill is a fairly small hotel but the rooms are more than adequate size wise and kept spotlessly clean. We didnt see one bug during our stay. Basic but everything you could want/need unless your more used to 5 star luxury. The hotel is nicely situated at the quieter end of Candolim and about 5 minutes walk to the beach. The restaurant serves very nice tasty food and the staff are very friendly. When we went in October not all the other restaurants in Candolim were open but of the ones we tried I would recommend The Stone House, Mango Grove, Floyds, and on the beach a place called Palms and Sands which is an excellent choice for lunch. If you are feeling adventurous head into Calengute and try the Punjabi Dhaba by the main taxi rank, this is a very good and very cheap restaurant used mainly by the locals. Bench seats and no aircon but food cooked and prepeared fresh in front of you, but be prepared to be the only non indian in the place! But in general I would advise giving Calengute a miss if you value a bit of peace and quiet though! Overall I found the hotel to be very good value and wouldnt hesitate to return - in fact there were quite a few return visitors while we were there. Cant wait to go back!
