“Loved the location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 10, 2009

I have stayed in this hotel several times and simply love the location. Most rooms have a beach view and seeing the waves come in gives you a thrill that cannot be explained in words.

Also, it is great value for money compared to the other Taj Hotels in the country which are priced way beyond what they deserve.

I liked the restaurant on the ground floor and lot and the beach view that comes with it. THe only grudge I have with Taj is that their buffet is non veg heavy and being a vegetarian, I often do not find enough choice.

The rooms on the ground floor are abysmal as they do not even get proper sunlight. It seems like a dungeon to me and I was unfortunate to stay in that room twice during my stay and even though I had asked for a room on the second floor or beyond. The responses that I got for this goof up from their side was very poor and hence after that I desisted from staying at Taj.

Its only for the location I am giving 3 stars to it.

The service provided by the Hotel staff was excellent. They know how to take care of customers and my stay was very pleasant. Food quality is also very good.

The pool is lovely, and more luxurious. The pool attendants were very friendly.

The Spa is also very good though little expensive but fabulous.

Restaurants are great and the food quality is excellent.

We paid Rs. 12000 per night for a room which I feel is reasonable.

Overall I was satisfied by the hotel and its services but if you want to mix a little luxury with the odd trip to the parks then this is one of the best place to stay.

After a great experience at the Gateway Hotel in Vijayawada, we were all looking forward to another good experience in Visakhapatnam. Unfortunately, the Gateway Hotel Visakhapatnam (used to be Taj Residence) felt short and did not quite impress us as much as we hoped.

Hotel is one street away from the beach so it is in a great location coming from downtown area. However, the premise is still quite far out from the section you can swim. Hotel lobby has a British colonial feel (atrium, dark wood beam etc), pleasant but a bit old-fashioned. The premise is consist of two parts - the original building and the tower facing the beach. We were all placed in rooms adjacent to the lobby at a lower level, which is part of the old building. Rooms at this floor are all older and dark, and they are on either side of the walkway connected to the breakfast room.

The Good. The outdoor swimming pool, the gym and the beautiful garden setting. We hang out around the pool area both days after work and it was absolutely delightful. The dinning experience is also quite pleasant - breakfast was adequate and the Chinese restaurant (Ming Garden) served the best Chinese food we had in our entire trip. Also, hotel service was quite up to the 4-star standard - staff are friendly and helpful.

Now the Bad. In spite of all above, I must say I was quite disappointed about the guest bedroom - it is old, dark and worn out. I felt like stepping into a 1980's room when I first walked in. The bathroom is definitely showing its age with dingy looking marble, non-working outlet and no hair dryer in place. Bathtub/wall were cracked with shower head totally rusted. Compare to the other Gateway Hotel I stayed at, it is definitely a let down. The clean modern rooms featured on the hotel website is simply not what we have experienced. We found out later that some of their rooms were indeed renovated but advertising ONLY those rooms on the website is very misleading.

Overall I will give this hotel a 3-star rating as there is not much left to be desired for other than the hotel service. Apparently still a lot more need to be improved, especially those rooms at the ground floor level. If Taj Group will renovate the entire hotel like they did to other Gateway properties, this could easily be the best hotel in town. Until then, I will probably have to think twice in terms of returning.

For people like me who like the sea this is the place to be, after staying here i fell in love with the city and decided to move here, the hotel in bang in front of the sea, and there is a huge balcony, the biggest i have seen, terrific service and great food, the chef was kind enough to dish out something special at my better half's directions and great city, very picturesque and friendly people, there are many a scenic places we visited like rishikonda, kailashgiri and the old light house was a terrific experience, the hotel is a TAJ property, so i will not be the 1st person praising it as they have excelled in hospitality since ages, great place to stay with very very good service and lots of privacy

The Taj Residency, Vizag is part of one of the India's best group of hotels, the TAJ GROUP OF HOTELS and stands up to the mark. It offers very luxurious rooms, with an awesome beach view.

I will have to use all the greatest adjectives I know to write a review about this hotel. Here you'll get everything that one can expect from the best of the industry. Great food, best service, very well furnished and maintained rooms, floors with carpets, swimming pool, best location, what not...!!!

It's very luxurious, costly and not the kinda of hotel preferable, if one is looking for yet another economy hotel. Best said, it provides value for money in the way of luxury...

We drove all the way from Hyderabad to Vyzag in the sweltering May heat - of course we knew that Vyzag would be very hot at that time of the year, but were hoping that the Taj would still be a good place to unwind. Our experiences at other Taj properties in the past had always been great.

We ended up arriving earlier than the 12pm check in time, and were graciously accommodated in a room - check in did not take much time, though the staff took a couple of extra minutes to match their records with the internet booking. This has always been my experience, whenever I book online in India!
Our room was nice and comfortable, not moth eaten as i fear with many outdated star hotels. The facade of the hotel was a trifle dirty but the interiors were fine.
Anyway, since we were on a 2N, 3D package, food was part of the deal - so we were thankfull to find out that the food quality was pretty great as well. We were lucky to have a "Chettinad Food Festival" while we were there. The nicest thing about the hotel is its pool - which is (for once) deep enough to actually swim in and has a lovely view of the sea. I spent much of my time there!
The spa was also good - we believe it had recently opened up. The service of the staff was great - the only dampner in the entire trip was the water in the room - which was positively rotten - but when we complained to the housekeeping staff - profuse apologies were offered and we were served a complementary vanila cake!

The view from the Harbour View windows will invite you to spend many hours just staring dreamily out of the windows at the fishing dhows. The Bar is well stocked and the coffee shop bright and cheerful. Excellent buffet.
