Stayed here for a week and experienced the usual great Sheraton quality. The rooms were very nicely appointed. The service was excellent and very eager to know any needs or request and carry them out. I had some problems getting my laptop connected to their wireless network and they had a tech guy come and take care of it. The food in the restuarants was good they had a daily buffet of Indian food and you could order non-Indian from the menu. The host and waiters worked hard to please. The hotel is a block off the beach area which is more of a evening destination for the locals to come and sit and visit. It is not a vacation beach. My room had a decent view of the bay, but had way too much street noise. Indians honk thier car horns at everything, there were dogs barking, etc.

  • Liked — Sheraton Quality and great service

I stayed one night at this hotel in Visag and found it to be an okay stay. I had been staying in lessor properties for the past week, so it probably seemed better than it actually was.

The Pro's:
The hotel is beautifully decorated and well-apportioned. The staff was very good, friendly and helpful. My room was good-sized and had a nice view of the ocean. The bed was comfortable and the pillows were the best that I had of any hotel I stayed at in India. The bathtub was large and the water pressure was excellent. The food in the restaurant was very good. The hotel was just a block uphill from the beach.

The Con's:
The room had a musty smell. It also had some water damage to the plaster on the wall outside of the bathroom -- like a water pipe had been leaking in the wall. The bathroom itself was not as clean as I would have liked (I am picky about that). I got a strange phone call in the night from someone down in the restaurant that I did not know or understand. The wi-fi service provided was a rip-off and horribly slow. For the price I paid for my stay, the internet should have been free (not 600r).

The bottom line is that I got a good night's sleep before flying to Hyderabad the next day -- but for a Hotel Group that prides itself on being high-end, they have a ways to go.

I would probably try a different hotel next time. However, I must add that I had lunch at the Taj hotel, across the street, and upon checking it out, it did not seem any better than the Grand Bay.

Have stayed at the Grand Bay several times over the past 2 years. Hotel is very friendly and probaly the best hotel in Vizag. Rooms are clean, spacious and air con works very well. Food is excellent, particularly in the chinese restuarant. Some of the rooms can be smokey, so specify a non smoking room if required.

Vizag is a quaint city in the South Indian State of Andhra Pradesh. It's got a nice beach, relaxed pace and some interesting sights to look around.
We stayed at one of the premier hotels in Vizag, Welcomgroup Grand Bay. The WelcomBreak Offer was tantalising and my family of four + a nephew stayed for 3 Nights/4 Days in two interconnecting rooms. Vizag has a small airport with connections from Hyderabad, Chennai, New Delhi, etc.
Grand Bay is perfectly positioned close to the Ramakrishna Beach which is a popular hangout for locals and tourists alike. Most of the rooms offer view of the sea.
The rooms were very comfortable with large beds, nice TV with plenty of satellite channels, fridge. The bathroom had a tub and the toiletries provided were of high standards. The full length windows offered an excellent view of the sea.
Swimming pool was clean.
The staff of Grand Bay were extremely friendly and took extra care to ensure we were comfortable. Breakfast which is included in the deal was sumptuous with an assortment of Indian and continental fare. We lunched once in the restaurant and found the buffet to be adequate.
Vizag has a special attraction in that it is the only place in SE Asia where you can visit a Submarine Museum. INS Kurusura, an attack submarine of Indian Navy, has been converted into a Submarine Museum and tours are conducted in English and Telugu (local language). It was an awesome sight to see the submarine at close quarters and to go through the various compartments. Claustrophobic it was, it left us wondering about the dedicated sailors who brave this environment for more than a month at a stretch.
Kailasagiri, a hillock on the outskirts of Vizag, affords a panoramic view of the city and is a popular picnic spot. The view of the City in the night is pleasing. Though there are a spattering of rides for the kids, there are not many things to retain our interest for long.
VUDA park on the beach is also a popular attraction. Arakku Valley and Bora Caves about 120 kms from Vizag have great scenic beauty and the travel to these places by train is breathtaking.

  • Liked — Good rooms, great location and friendly staff
  • Disliked — No coffee / tea makers in the room
  • Tips/Secrets — Don't miss the submarine museum
