Avoid at all costs.
I came to Hyderabad on business and spent 3 nights in a (good) new hotel in Hitech, but then had to be based more centrally as I was consulting and sharing space with a local consultant in the Masab Tank area - and needless to say the traffic is hectic and it made no sense to be stuck in it every day - or so I thought...
So we changed plans and I planned to spend a further 3 nights at Hampshire Plaza, in order to complete the presentation, which included the need for decent internet to download research and image files that were being prepared for me overseas. Simple. AND, I also needed to make a Skype call to my bank in the USA. This is not an unusual scenario in today's "business hotel" world.
On checking in, my colleagues and I enquired as to the state of the internet, as this was central to our decision of being in any hotel, and we were assured it was perfect by the front desk. I had spent a day with less than optimal internet at the consultant's office and could not afford any more delays on the project.
Now ordinarily I can put up with less than amazing food (the dinner buffet was not great at all), and normally I can put up with a bit of noise, (there was the Ganesh ceremony and drumming outside which did not sound too bad at first), and normally I can put up with cramped rooms, dated decor and tired and dirty bathrooms (all present here), but this is how my intended 3-day stay actually turned out (times approximate):
1- Check in around 8:30pm -into ROOM NO 1.
2- Not great buffet supper finshed by 9:30pm
3- Retire to rooms and attempt to download the work I need, but have been provided wrong code 10:00pm
4- Staff come and give right wifi code 10:10 pm - with simpering apologies of course...
5- Call staff back, because it appears that bandwidth is too low to access internet properly. IT "specialist" spends 1 hour trying to fix - making calls, doing checks, fiddling with my computer. EMAIL itself IS working, which proves that my computer is accessing the internet, however some server conflicts are preventing it from accessing google and facebook at all (these error messages are on the screen), and dropbox is not connecting.
6- Get moved to new room where signal is better (ROOM NO. 2) 11:10
7- Call staff back again because there STILL seems to be a feedback loop with the wifi that is preventing me from logging onto google and facebook. Skype is a disaster. Dropbox not working at all. IT "specialist" spends another 90 mins + trying to fix it (calling people, fiddling with my computer, rebooting his server etc etc) but finally gives up and offers me his laptop to use - which I accept politely so as not to offend, but actually have no intention of using as I need to connect to dropbox, and besides, he promised me that he would have the ISP technicians come to the hotel to try and sort it "first thing in the morning". It is now at least 12:30 and I am in any event EXHAUSTED.
8- I try to go to sleep at around 12:45 - but battle as I have been put on the 1st floor, facing the road, and there is drumming and celebrating outside for the Ganesh festival. Eventually I drop off out of sheer exhaustion at around 1am.
9- At 4am the drumming outside has now turned into a total frenzy, and moved directly infront of my hotel window. I call the front desk to complain. After complaining for 1 minute, the response I still get is a bewildered: "Is everything ok?" from the duty manager. Now I ask you once again Hampshire Plaza, WHY WOULD A GUEST CALL THE FRONT DESK AT 4AM IF EVERYTHING IS OK???
10- It takes me about 5 mins to explain that in fact everything is definitely NOT OK, (which is the reason for my call at 4am) and that I cannot sleep with the noise outside. The response is "but its a religious festival, sir..." (AS IF I DIDN'T KNOW THAT!!!) The staff seem clearly to not give a damn about the comfort of their guests. Any normal hotelier would have prevented this unhappiness, either by locating guests in quieter rooms, or by going on to the street to get the revellers to move on, or calling the police!)
11- 4:20am I am now in ROOM 3, on the 2nd floor facing the other way. (i.e. not to the main road). In conversation with the staff, it turns out that the hotel is PRACTICALLY EMPTY, so I enquire as to WHY on god's earth they would have put me:
a) in Room 1, where they know there is low bandwidth, and I have SPECIFICALLY requested it.
b) in Room 1 and Room 2 (both facing the road on level 1) when they know there is a loud religious ceremony going on outside for ALL NIGHT for another 2 days coming!!!
This shocking service to me smacks of pure lack of attention, care and possibly even SPITE.
Needless to say, I got 3 hours sleep that night, and my client in another room even less.
I called IT specialist again around 8am, but he said there was still nothing he could do, but that the ISP technicians were on there way. By 11am nothing had been done and we decided to CHECK OUT! 11am.
On complaining at the front desk, and asking why I should be charged a red cent for such poor service and 3 hours sleep, I then got the issue amplified to the manager and the following thrown back in my face by him:
1- RE Internet
a) "we have never had this problem before" (so what? you seem to never had a macbook pro in your hotel either...none could be found to double-test the internet situation)
b) "we loaned you a laptop so you should not complain" (it didn't help me at all as I needed not only skype, not only google office, but also Dropbox, and also, that PC laptop was also not really connecting to net properly either - after being promised it would be sorted in the morning, and being so late, I decided it better to get some rest and tackle first thing, which was promised me would happen)
c) "we have now called the ISP technicians, please wait" (yeah, but that was promised to me "first thing" yesterday and its now 11am and still no solution, and I have a presentation to do!
d) "why did you not check out before you went to sleep" (well that is just plain insulting and disgraceful of your manager to have suggested - imagine its now 1am... am I really going to trawl off looking for another hotel, when I am being promised that the internet will be fixed first thing in the morning?)
e) "its because you've got an apple mac" (I have stayed in hundreds of hotels around the world and never had this problem, any excuse like that one thrown at me)
f) "the wifi service is complimentary so you should not complain" - that was IT!
There are many things in a business hotel that are a GIVEN in the 21st Century, especially ones charging the rates that you are, for example,
WIFI (whether free or not it must actually WORK!!!)
To simply say (when its defective) that any of these things is "complimentary" is a disgrace and a pathetic smokescreen. Is toilet paper complimentary? Is a pillow complimentary? NO! - its all part of the package - and part of one's decision making criteria. So is WIFI in a business hotel! FREE OR NOT, it must work, and if it doesn't work you can expect severe unhappiness...and particularly because I made it very plain at registration that was especially what I needed.
2- RE LACK OF SLEEP AS A RESULT OF NOISE OUTSIDE
a) "but its a religious festival sir..." (duh!)
b) "but we moved your room..." (duh, why did you put me there in the first place when the hotel is empty and there are many similar rooms on the quiet side of the building???)
What to do with this place?
Frankly, it should probably be sold and upgraded yes (even if the bathrooms are poky and the rooms small), but what would really make a big difference is if ALL the simpering staff, useless IT staff and evasive management are dismissed and replaced with people who actually have a clue about hospitality and what guest happiness and service means. This lot do not!
IF the front desk (in the morning at breakfast), after 3 room moves during the night and 4 calls to my room to sort out internet problems do not know who I am, and that I am certainly not happy, and can greet me with a banal "is everything ok sir?" (once again) - then this indicates a total lack of briefing or internal communication. I was not asking to be treated with kid gloves, but I was not expecting to be treated like a total idiot either.
Once again, give this dump a WIDE berth. In fact, if you have to go to Hyderabad, do yourself a favour and find a modern hotel in a new area. Your stress levels with thank you and you will actually be able to get some work done, and some rest.
Don't sleep on the street side. It sounds obvious but its not. The glazing is poor and sound get...
