Fortune Resort is located on Marine Hill. The beautiful lounge overlooking the Bay, where the guests are seated before checking in, offers a breathtaking view and makes one look forward to the stay.
We had booked 2 rooms. The check-in formalities were more complex than anything we had seen before! All of us, including senior citizens and an 8 year old kid, were asked to produce photo-ids which they photocopied. The receptionist told us this is standard procedure for Andamans. Strangely, we did not come across this "standard procedure" at any other hotel in Havelock or Port Blair.
While booking the travel website room info showed "View: Ocean". However, on arrival, we were told that for an ocean view room we had to shell out additional Rs.750 per room, per night. Since we had less than a day to spend at the hotel, we did not feel like pursuing the matter. Have written to the travel website too...so that the correct information is available for travellers.
We were given two interconnected rooms at one end of the property - a long walk from the reception area...but it was overall so beautiful that we did not mind. The rooms were nice, spacious, slanting roofs and wooden floors. One had a little side view of the ocean the other overlooked some hill greenery. One of them had a window AC which is somewhat noisier than the split A/C the other room had. They provide 2 small mineral water bottles & 2 small packs of chips complimentary in each room. There is a mini fridge and tea/coffee maker also and the housekeeping is not stingy about refills.
The biggest disappointment was the bathroom. It is extremely small with old fittings, no health faucet and very old fashioned blue tiles - like a hostel bathroom. The hotel staff candidly admitted that it is 30 years old property and while there have been some renovations, it is not entirely possible for them to remodel the bathrooms!
The linen was clean and they provide beautiful biotique toileteries - perhaps to lessen the shock of seeing the bathroom.
The Nico Bar has the the perfect setting for a chilled Beer on a hot afternoon. The breakfast was good, F&B service is good. Restaurant "Mandalay Bay" has a nice ambience. We had to check out at by 8 to take the Macruzz to Havelock. The breakfast was ready by 7:30 and the reception folks were quick and correct with all checkout formalities. Overall staff is courteous and efficient.
The hotel is very close to the airport, the main museums, Cellular Jail, Rajiv Gandhi sports complex, the Macruzz jetty and the Bazaar...that means almost everything within Port Blair (other than Corbyn's Cove beach). You can wrap up all your Port Blair sight seeing in half a day from here...provided you have planned well. From the airport, you can take a prepaid taxi to the hotel. It costs just Rs.100. If you get a good prepaid taxiwala, fix up with him for your other sightseeing plans too...The hotel travel desk charges outrageously and in our case proved unreliable too. If possible, try alternate travel arrangements.
Tripadvisor reviews were of great help in planning our Andamans trip. But I was so petrified after reading the reviews for Fortune that even though we were staying for 3 nights in PB we booked only 1 night at Fortune. Now I can compare Fortune with other hotels and feel it is a decent option for Port Blair.
None of the hotels in Port Blair justify their price - in terms of facilities and maintenance. We can try to pick the best among what is available. Overall, if you have a short stay and can ignore the bathroom, Fortune is a good place to stay.
You are outdoors most of the time. And at night you cannot see the sea! Don't fret too much abou...
