My time down in Honduras was absolutely amazing!!!!!
I never stayed at a destination resort before so I didn't have much to compare to although I've spent much time travelling the globe. I enjoy tak'n the road less travelled and wanted to try something different than the other touristy resorts in Mexico, Cuba, Dominican Republic, etc. I didn't know what to expect.
With slightly short notice (less than 2 weeks) from friends, I arranged travel down to Honduras.
Our delayed flight brought us hungrily and restlessly into La Ceiba's International airport later at night where we were greeted promptly and warmly by our very cordial and hospitable tour vacation representatives from Conquest Vacations. They eagerly and patiently answered all questions, comments, and concerns.
Upon arrival at the Telamar Hotel and Villas front desk reception we were met with very courteous staff who checked us in quickly and carried our bags to our rooms a considerable distance.
We had the whole resort and beach to ourselves as we were a small group of just 15 and the first from Western Canada.
Our superior Hotel rooms were immaculate which had been recently renovated to include marble bathroom countertops and a large wall mounted flat screen T.V. There were 2 queen size beds which were very comfortable to sleep on. I had a pool side view with a spacious balcony which was set in a colonial style building similiar to styles of the plantation farms in North America around the turn of the 20th century making one feel at home with a warm touch of nostalgia. The rooms have all the amenities including free wireless or hardwired broadband internet available.
The food was incredible. The restaurant was a short walk from our rooms that had a elegant buffet style that included a wide variety of fresh fruits and vegetables as well as numerous entrees and deserts that would appeal to any liking whether your a vegetarians, seafood, or meat lover morning, lunch, or dinner. I've had many mediocre and poor tasting buffets in North America so I was very impressed by this Telamar buffet in comparison. Patrons do need to follow the buffet's scheduled sittings for meals as its not 24/7 but food can easily be taken back to the room and stored in the room fridge. During a 7 day stay one à la carte dinner is included however its taste was less delectable than the nightly buffet.
During our stay the staff was very courteous to accomodate almost any request we unleashed on them. If something wasn't there, there was always a staff member going the extra mile to meet your expectations. If any of the stores at the Centro Commercial Mall at the hotel didn't have an essential item you needed during your stay (eg. a hairbrush) merchants were more than willing to run and grab one from the nearby town of Tela or elsewhere for no extra cost. Many staff spoke English. If any staff member couldn't understand your English they were very quick to seek someone who could translate for you. Sometimes at the wetbar service was very slow get'n a drink but we're on vacation so whats the need to rush, we're on Caribbean Island / Central American time anyways. I fancied the Caiphiriñas, truly scrumptious, lime flavoured drink!!!
The Hotel has 3 gorgeous pools, including 2 large new pool areas built with a separate large water slide and kid slide area great for families or the water enthusiast. It has a swim up pool/wet bar. Also the hotel lends out boogie boards which were great in the nearby Caribbean ocean which had nice warm water and soft sand. The waves and swell are considerably gentle and easy enough for beginner or moderate swimmers of all ages.
There were tennis courts in moderate condition for free usage on the far eastern side of the resort. Also a sauna between both pool areas.
Unfortunately the advertised golf course wasn't available during our stay as the green conditions weren't up to par from recent rains. Needless to say a Conquest representative made the opportunity available at a well conditioned 18 hole course only a little over an hour away which included carts, clubs, green fees, and caddies for a mere $50 U.S. per person with a group of 4. Travel and tips weren't included to the golf course but for that wicked awesome price who could complain.
For those more adventurous there was plenty of opportunity to enjoy the beautiful splendour of Honduras on one of the many excursions the local tour companys had to offer which could be booked through the Turaser office at the hotel or in the nearby town of Tela only 10minutes walking distance. No matter what your fancy there was an activity for you, whether snorkeling out at Cayos Cochinos Marine Reserve or relaxing at the Canopy and Hot Springs and Spa Tour in La Ceiba and many more for moderate prices.
We ventured out into Tela, a small nearby town, to experience some of the local culture and found it to be very safe. Nobody begged for money and confrontation was non-existant. We enjoyed authentic inexpensive local cuisine in a comfortable pub style restaurant and had the liberty to explore the local ambience of stores around downtown square, a great place for business.
The overall service of Telamar staff was awesome. Never met a grumpy staff member that wouldn't go the mile for you. I believe this is one of the nicest hotels within the area. We had seen the Palma Real briefly in La Ceiba and Telamar is aesthetically more posh. This resort isn't packed like sardines like other desination resorts if your into that kinda thing. If you wanted Disneyland than you should have gone to Disneyland. The vacation was decently priced for an all inclusive resort with flight.
Honduras is beautifully full of heart. I can't wait to come back again real soon.
