I would have written earlier about Boboi but we arrived back from holiday and it has been mayhem! If you want to be 10 paces away from a deserted (apart from the cows and crabs) beach, eat incredible food, be surrounded by friendly, helpful people and emerse yourself in culture, then Boboi is the place to be.

I must admit that our trip started off quite badly. We were expecting Buba to collect us from the airport but unfortunately there were some miscommunications and Buba did not know. After a LOT of hassle at the airport for being toubabs, we got a very expensive taxi to Boboi. When we arrived David, the owner, was incredibly apologetic and bought a couple of bottles of Julbrew to our round house. It all got better from there!

The accommodation is basic: a bed with a mozzie net and clean bedding and a wetroom style en-suite with a shower, toilet and sink. The water is clean and runs all the time. It's cold but perfect in the heat! I have to mention as well that we were there in April and there were no mozzies as it gets quite breezy off the sea.

The food was the best that we had in the whole of The Gambia over two weeks, and we travelled all over the country. The domada was to die for! And if David's son, Rory, is there, ask him to make you pancakes with caramalised bananas - heaven!!

The staff are incredible and always smiling and helpful. Mani took us into Kartong on our first day and we visited a local shop and bought some material, then went to a tailor and had some clothes made up. We watched the tailor work and he was a real craftman - no pins needed! We felt integrated into society after just one week. It was a very special place.

My boyfriend proposed to me during our stay at Boboi and the staff were so happy for us. Some local guys from the village came and played the djembe that evening and we all sat around the campfire, it was very special.

If you want to be near the hustle and bustle and surrounded by hundreds of other tourists, then this is not the place to stay. You come to Boboi to get away from it all. Nearby there is a reptile farm run by a french man, who is trying to educate the locals (and tourists). This was lots and fun and very informative. One day, we went fishing along the Allahein river which separates The Gambia and Senegal. It was beautiful and and so peaceful. And of course, there is Kartong. We went to the village a few times, once on Easter Sunday when we were invited to drink palm wine with the locals - it is an aquired taste! We were also invited by the local beekeeper to see his bees. The hives were quite incredible and he also had a little 'petting zoo' with goats, chickens and puppies! He is setting up a business which will hopefully open later this year so that people can have food and drink while visiting the bees. We bought some honey which is gorgeous! And some beeswax moisturiser which is great for sensitive skin.

I also have to mention the 'bumsters'. People will come up and talk to you, not everyone wants something, they're just being friendly. We made friends on this holiday by talking to the locals and I know that we will see them again. If you don't want to talk to someone, that's fine, but don't be rude - The Gambia is their country.

All in all, perfect for us but not for people who like their home comforts.

Based on a week there in January
Good points:
Peaceful and quiet
Fantastic location - best lodge on that bit of coast
Beautiful near deserted beach
Delightful, friendly staff
Delicious veggie and non-veggie food
Virtually no biting insects

Bad points:
Had to call to get airport pick up even though pre-arranged
Luxury bungalows a bit short on luxuries e.g. no electricity, no hot water, next to no furniture. However they are spacious and do have a great location looking out over the sea...
Despite the best efforts of local town there is still a degree of Bumster-ish hassle on the beach. Never unpleasant though.

My stay at Boboi Beach Lodge was all I could have asked for and more. The location is second to none, a perfect, almost deserted beach, far away from the madding crowd. The local village is walking distance. There's not much in the way of tourist attractions (a plus in my opinion) but it's a typical Gambian village - welcoming, friendly and full of life.

The lodge is much the same. This was my first solo trip abroad so I took lots of books and was preparing for a few lonely moments but I brought all of them back unread. There is a very communal approach among the guests and plenty of interesting conversation and good company. The rooms are basic with few amenities but the shower (cold) and loo worked and a headtorch (bring one!) was sufficient for getting to bed.

The food was good and plentiful and very fresh and the view of the beach from the dining area is delightful.

I look forward to a return visit, as soon as possible.

Boboi is beautifully located just off the beach. It is no more than 50 metres to the sea from your room and the beach itself stretches for miles in both directions with hardly a person to be seen. If you want a quiet and secluded beach, then this is a great place to go.

The rooms themselves are basic but good value considering how much you pay for them. They essentially have a bed, shower and sink (no hot water but this is the norm for the Gambia).

For me, the biggest surprise was the quality of the food at Boboi; probably the best of anywhere we stayed in the Gambia. They have a large menu with all the typical Gambian dishes like yassa and all were cooked superbly well. I also liked the fact that all the fish we ate there was clearly caught locally earlier in the day.

You can easily walk from Boboi to the reptile centre (probably about 1.5 km), which is definitely worth a visit.

We booked online and had arranged a transfer to Boboi from the airport - when we arrived at the airport nobody was there to take us there and when we rang Boboi it turned out their car had broken down and was in the garage for repairs. Probably the moral of this is make sure you have Boboi's number. For the record, the transfer we took back form Boboi went smoothly.

We had booked into Boboi Beach Lodge as the first stop on a week long trip around parts of Gambia. We had arranged by email to be picked up at the airport by someone from Bonoi at around 9pm in the evening when our flight got in. However when we got into the arrivals hall there was no one there to meet us. We looked around, all the time getting hustled by the taxi cab drivers and waited around 20 mins until we were the only passengers left in the hall and we had to admit defeat. We then had to shell out 850 dalasis to be taken by taxi to Boboi. When we got to Boboi the greeting was less than warm. We explained about there being onone to pick us up to the lady who opened the gate but there was no explanation or apology. She then disappeared leving us standing in the dark looking for a torch to see where we were meant to go. She reappeared several minutes later and showed us to our hut. We were expecting this to be basic but there wasn't a stick of furniture, no mirror, no bin, no rug, no table, no light in the bathroom and peeling paint on the walls, nothing excpet the bed which sagged in the middle and felt damp. The shower was cold, although we had expected that.
Anyway, when we got up the next day, we saw the setting and much was forgiven. The beach was peaceful and deserted and our hut overlooked it. We went for a walk and met hardly anyone but a few people fishing. It really could have been an advert for the Carribean or somewhere similar. Just breathtaking. The breakfast of papaya, homemade peanut butter and baguette was very tasty and all of the other guests we met were absolutely lovely and good company. The area was rather scruffy though and could have done with being tidied up, peeling paint, bits of twisted, rusting metal made it just feel neglected. Once we had explored the Kartong area we decided to move on and organised ourselves a taxi to go to Marakissa. When it arrived to take us the lady who owned the place (who had incidentally never even introduced herself) accused our driver of having persuaded us to leave and of depriving her of custom, which we felt was a bit rich since she'd barely spoken to us.
I can't think of another lodge in the coast in this price range that has such a wonderful and peaceful setting but we did feel that the place had seen better days and was lacking in maintenance or investment.
