“Great View from our Burre”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 8, 2006

What a lovely place. We had a burre on the waterfront and we could see the islands. Very friendly place and quiet. Staff very helpful but don,t pay for visit to local village. We paid $40 for the two of us and were only there 15mins and the driver wanted to go. Very disappointing. I would definitely go back to stay at the resort though.

After reading rave reviews (in this forum) about the meals at the Marina next door to the First Landing Resort our party of four tried it out. Two of our party ordered pork chops - these were so undercooked that it was literally raw when you got close to the bone and two of us ordered rump steak which was so tough and sinewy that it couldn't be swallowed. We did complain and were told they would not give us a refund.
The service at the First Landing was exceptional and the cleaner who came in daily did a fantastic job. The resort was very well laid out, with tranquil picturesque surroundings.
The meals unfortunately were not served "hot" and were often luke warm or cold when they arrived. Key ingredients were missed e.g. the Papaya and Prawn salad - had no papaya in it. My Chicken, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pizza - had no cranberry sauce or pumpkin.
Our most disappointing part of our visit was paying $150 each to go on a catamarran to a deserted island to have a barbeque which was run by "Fun n Sun" which contracted their services to the First Landing. The boat transfers were very dangerous, (one woman was crying in terror), one person fell in the water between the boat and the wharf, there wasn't enough food and what food they did have was not cooked properly. Drunken people were allowed to walk freely around the boat and several nearly fell overboard. There was also no lifejackets or lifeboys visible on the boat. One of the boats involved in the island to catamarran transfers broke down and had to be towed back to shore.
The "Fun n Sun" were charging $140 for a half day trevally trawling fishing trip and those people who paid didn't catch anything.

Be aware if shopping in Nadi of retailers who offer to gift wrap your gifts, they go out the back and wrap up a piece of paper and hand it to you gift wrapped. You don't know till you get home that you were ripped off.

I would certainly go the the First Landing again but would recommend to all to keep away from the services and tours of the "Fun n Sun" tours.

  • Liked — Small boutique resort
  • Disliked — Not enough entertainment
  • Tips/Secrets — If you are very active and want something more adventurous, go somewhere else

My husband and I ( in our early 50's) stayed here the day of 8th July2006 till early evening of the 9th waiting to catch a plane back to New Zealand. We had just come off a 4 day Captain Cook Yasawa Island cruise where we had a fabulous time, but saw very little sun. No problem with sun when we got to the First Landing! The First Landing is lovely and junglely, like being on the jungle cruise at Disneyland! Its so laid back and peaceful. We had a garden bure that was nice and private, and spent alot of time just relaxing by the pool. The restaurant has yummy food( don't miss the lobster dinner and the Pacific dance show on Saturday night!) and beautiful atmosphere right on the beach.( romantic at night). Really nice staff. Jone ( the activity director) is a great guy!( don't miss feeding fish with him) and Joshua ( porter) can't do enough for you( coming to our room 3 times when our safe didn't work and waiting till our airport transfer came even though he did not need to) You can't really snorkel off the beach there, but you can arrange trips from the resort to the outer islands. The marina next door can only be reached by connecting gate from the resort between 5:45 and 11Pm. There is a really resonable store there( only open till 6pm) that sells quite cheap snacks and drinks( cheaper then the resort). All and all the First Landing is a great place to just relax and chill out. We'll be back for a longer stay next time!

  • Liked — jungle atmosphere and beach front restaurant
  • Disliked — not good swimming off the beach
  • Tips/Secrets — feed the fish with Jone and check out the general store next to the resort for cheap snacks

We stayed at First landing for 3 days after a month in Australia on our way back to the UK. (should have been 4 but the flight was delayed for a day). We had our 11 month old daughter with us and werent sure what to expect. but wow, the staff were wonderful, they loved our daughter and even offer a baby sitting service if you fancy a day or night out. The food was excellent, but as others have said, a little pricey, but you get what you pay for. The beach front bure was beautifull. Clean and tidy, with plenty of fresh towels and replacement tea, coffee, etc. No TV, which, comming from a self confessed couch potato I found strange, but after 24 hrs never missed it!. There are plenty of organised activities to go on, and you can even adventure out on your own if you want, with buses and taxis a plenty. The pool was lovely and offered a drinks and food service. The only dissapointment was the beach, there isnt much of one, but if you want to go island hoppig you will be sure to find one. Met some fabulous other guests whilst we were there from all over the world, this place makes you just chill out. Oh, and you have to go to a Cava ceremony.Overall summary.....saving up to go back

Resort is quiet, secluded, central to towns yet with an island feel. Great staff, great food, very relaxing. Facilities are very adequate for the price. I would suggest reviewer from Sydney got a bad day as this is a beautiful spot.

One suggestion - be wary of the tour operators next door. Fun n Sun offer island hopping. However if it is wind (which is highly likely) they only take you to Bounty Island which is also accessible via ferry from the Marina next door.

A beautiful place with all the main land facilities and spot easily accessible.

We stay at the Fist Landing Resort for 2 1/2 days in April 06. The first day we arrived very early in the morning, we were shown to our bure and told our luggage would arrive shortly. We actually gave up waiting and went to collect ourselves from the reception to take to our room.

The more time you spend on the island of Fiji the more you will find that the locals have there own time, they will quite openly tell you this, which to us Westerners take some time to adjust to!

We took the catamaran out island hopping and snorkelling, which was just fantastic. We stopped off for a BBQ lunch on a gorgeous island. This trip made our holiday in Fiji as we got to see the picture postcard views of the beaches and other resorts in the area.

One night we ventured out to the local town, we were provided with a hotel taxi and asked to go to a Chinese restaurant, the taxi driver recommended a nice place and drove us there. We were quite shocked to see all the shops behind metal bars and lots of young men roaming around town, looking quite intimidating. Our taxi pulled up at the restaurant and a security guard opened the metal gate to the entrance of the main door. The food was fantastic and very cheap. On return, we called the hotel to ask the driver to return. The waiters told us not to leave until the driver returned. It was an exciting experience but not one that I would have done again as 2 girls together we felt a little uncomfortable with the surroundings.

On our last day we walked around to the harbour bar for a few beers and snack. It was cheaper and really nice to see the sun set over a different side of the resort.

Our experience was a pleasant one, the staff were friendly, but didn’t smile a great deal. The food was superb but expensive if you regard that the staff who work their get paid very poor. If you want bottles of water or ice creams during the day, go to the shop around at the marina at the back of the hotel. There isn’t anywhere to investigate around the hotel resort by foot, but the pool area is well stocked with furniture and a fantastic cool swimming pool with a waiter to take you food and drinks orders. And one last thing to comment on, the beach, sorry to say that its not really a beach, you will need to travel somewhere else to lay on a beach.

Arriving at First Landing at night-time you walk down a lit walkway into the resort that takes your breath away. A beautiful part of the mainland of Fiji. Yes there are oil storage facilities nearby, not something you think about once on the resort. The staff at First Landing are without doubt top notch. The true Fijian flavour of the resort is a bonus, nothing commercial and the secluded situation is beautiful. Make sue you get involved in the activities on offer: village tours, fish feeding, basket weaving, crab racing etc. All hosted by Jone, the most entertaining host!!! The restaurant and menu are great - evidenced by the full bookings every night. Also at the resort are Fun N Sun adventures who will take you fishing, snorkeling, island hopping, out on a catamaran etc and the local boys who go with you are the best - never have we laughed so much on a fishing trip.

There are several choices of accommodation on offer, beautiful villas with their own pool and spa, beachfront bures wth views of the sunset, and garden bures surrounded by beautiful tropical gardens.

Remember to spend some time at the pool - Kellys Pool Bar is a must - what a storyteller!!

Make sure you get out and have a good look around the area - the culture is fascinating and a lot of historcal events happened in the area - something worth checking out.
