“harmony and value”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 1, 2010

I spent 5 nights in Naveria Heights Lodge in November 2010.
If you would like to travel to Savusavu, I recommend you the Lodge. For me it was absolut perfect.
The view to the bay is fantastic. The building, my room, the furniture are in a wonderful harmony with the nature- which is very important for me. Sharon and Scott are very kind and helpful persons.
But before you travel to Fiji ask some pepole - who was there - about the country, the people, about the state of development. It depends on your needs, and on the ideas about the perfect holiday, wether Fiji vill fit into you or not.

We stayed at the Naveria Heights Lodge for three nights surrounding our cruise on the Tui Tai. It was a wonderful place to relax and enjoy the gorgeous views of the Savu Savu Bay. The place was clean and comfortable. The bathroom was basic, I do wish there was a door on it. There's no air conditioning, but with the high ceilings and fans, I didn't have a problem. Sharon and Scott are amazing, so friendly and nice.

The place is a 3 minute taxi ride out of town. It's not a far walk either, but be prepared for a steep hike up the driveway. I didn't mind doing it, but my husband avoided it to the point of renting a scooter specifically to take him up and down the 500m driveway. The taxi to the Surf n Turf (best restaurant in Savu Savu and on the opposite end of the small main drag) is F$8 each way. Or if Scott or Sharon are heading down the hill on errands, they'll drop you off in town.

When we left, all I could think about was returning. It was so peaceful there. I'd happily go back.

My partner and I stayed here for a couple nights at the beginning of our holiday in Fiji. It was a perfect landing pad to adjust to local time, with amazing views and comfortable accommodations. Sharon and Scott were great hosts and if you are interested in adventure activities like mountain biking and hiking, this is the place for you!

I stayed here for about a week on a solo trip. Everything about Naveria Heights is just perfect. Sharon, her two boys, the staff are very friendly and welcoming. Yes, the driveway is a hike but Sharon is constantly driving to/fro town and will gladly give a ride; or she can provide you with the numbers of drivers (Bobby is one of them) with 4WD taxis. The beds are comfortable, the breakfast is delicious and fresh (homemade granola cereal and breads) and the view is just breathtaking!
If you want to go diving, Sharon can connect you with KoroSun Dive, very professional but very fun - I had a blast with them
I cant say enough good things about Naveria Heights - go there and you'll understand why!

This is the BEST PLACE in Fiji - we are very very lucky to have found such an amazing place, where the views are from dreams.
So fresh, clean et muy muy tranquillo
The owners make staying like home - no trouble to look after all you need.
It is like a paradise postcard. The tropical garden full of fruit & flowers, and WOW - best pool - you have to see it to believe it - where you look across the bay & mountans.
I travel alot in FIJI and never found such a beautiful place....
Muchos gracias mi amigos

It’s hard to fault this place. It has picture perfect views, unbelievable breakfasts, and has been built with great attention to detail. And Sharon, her beautiful boys, cool dog and very lovely staff all make this the place to stay in Savusavu.

Let’s clear up this driveway thing too. It’s 500 metres, of 25-40 degree incline in high temperatures. But that is the price to pay for a view. A pool awaits you at the top if you are crazy enough to walk it at midday (like we did twice). Better still Bobby the taxi driver has a 4WD and will whisk you back and forth to town for $5FJD a time (and he is a very nice guy). If you have your mobile phone he will be there in minutes of your call at anytime. If you don’t you may be able to get someone to call him. Or arrange a time for him to return to pick you up when he drops you somewhere. If you decide to walk to town it is 5 minutes to the road and 10-20 minutes to the centre of town (add 5 minutes to the return trip back up). Taxis are everywhere and cheap so you can always get around the town/island easily.

We had an amazing time in Savusavu, which we found pretty and quaint despite the fact it is growing and has a lot of commerce now (at times I felt I was seen as a walking cash machine). Its one failing was the lack of information for tourists. Even Sharon was sometimes a bit vague, but she was pre-occupied at the time organising her holiday and water supply. The lack of up-to-date information was frustrating and meant we didn’t feel like we had spent all our time well. So here’s some advice to help out:

Where to eat: Surf and Turf every night and lunch (unless you stay a month you won’t have the same thing twice). Maybe the Copra Shed for pizza one night. Have a beer at the Planters Club and Decked Out.

Island Tours: Hire a car from the petrol station at the airport turn off (down the Surf and Turf end of town). Its $120FJD including insurance (plus gas). And then drive to Labasa; through highland villages to a small piece of India. We went out for lunch at Palmlea Lodge about 10km before Labasa. I would have stayed there a night (or two) if I had known about it. I wouldn’t bother driving the peninsula as the road is rough and inland with little to see until near the end (and you would see this if you took the ferry to Taveuni).

Snorkelling: This was a disappointment for us. We had heard great things but if you can’t get out on a boat you will see little. Split Rock was amazing. Get a taxi driver to take you there. There are some stupid and misleading descriptions on the net so let me clear this up. Go towards Cousteau’s. Stop between the road marker 6.2 and 6.3. About 10 metres before the 6.3 marker there is a little rocky beach. Swim out from there to the mooring (a pale yellow buoy on its own) about 25 metres. Swim about 10 metres past it, then 15 back towards Savusavu. You will know it when you get there. It is an easy swim. If you can no longer see the bottom you are way too far out (see my pictures for more detail). If you are a mad keen snorkeler ring Colin at Koro Sun Diving and see if he is going somewhere he can take you snorkelling (he has spots suitable for snorkelers). Failing that try Rock’n Down Under in town. Sadly both were busy with divers and couldn’t take us out. We tried the Dolce Vita Dolphin Tour which also includes some snorkelling on a reef. We had heard from two others this was great, but suspect ‘Dolphin Joe’ couldn’t be bothered that day. It was the only time in Fiji we felt ripped off. The reef he took us to was stuffed and over fished. And the $50 taxi ride each way added insult to the $100 paid to go out in a crappy little boat to see a few dolphins. (it’s important to note the trip is normally $170FJD).

Massage: Amelia can come to the B&B and massage you for $50. This could be the best $50 you spend in your life. Say no more.

Handicraft: Kam is a Fijian guy down on the main road that makes his own crafts. We bought a kava bowl off him and we love it. It is authentic which makes it special to us. There are cheaper ones available made on a lathe, painted, and not made or sold by native Fijians. There was also a lovely painter selling her works in the Copra Shed. We were lucky enough to meet the lovely J as well and later went into her Kava Lounge (near Surf and Turf) and bought 10 little bags of Kava. Perfect gifts for friends…

Getting to Taveuni: There are so many questions on the net about this. And it is so stupidly simple. Go to the bus station at 7am and hop on a bus marked Taveuni. If you want to book ahead go to the Country Kitchen across the road from the bus station and ask to book (if their bus ain’t going they will tell you who to see next). A time table doesn’t exist. Some operators don’t go some days. It makes no sense to me. But I am assured at least one bus, and one connecting ferry go every day (there are four ferries in total). We went on a Thursday and there were two buses and two ferries. The bus trip and ferry ride were one of the best things we did in our three weeks. Lovely school kids, women selling cakes, dolphins and turtles. It was like a tour for $15 each! Alternately take Blightwaters giant (and probably much safer) ferry from Savusavu. Book it by the town’s generator. It has a time table on the web, (it is currently being rescheduled to help the cyclone ravaged islands). It was running a couple of days late when we were there.

I hope this helps you get more from your trip to Vanua Levu. It’s the sort of place where things change a lot so make sure you ask someone and get up to date info. Who that someone should be is what we never worked out.
