“Trip of a lifetime”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 26, 2014

… and that’s no exaggeration. Reading the last few reviews, I think we were members of a large group that consider this one of the top destinations in the world. Where to begin… from arrival to departure, this is an amazing resort.

If you’ve never been to Fiji, the setting is everything you wish Hawaii would be: a lush, tropical paradise without the crowds. The Fijians are truly the warmest, most welcoming people I’ve met (I’ll never forget the random customs guy at the X-ray machine at the airport in Nadi shaking my hand saying Bula, welcome to Fiji!).

I could write a novel about Namale, but suffice it to say that the setting, food, accommodations, adventures, drinks, and most of all the people, are everything you could ever ask for on a honeymoon or romantic getaway. If you’re not happy here, then you’re not capable of being happy! Our highlights: lunch (and a swim) at the waterfall, our amazing oceanfront room, Siti’s killer drinks, kayaking and paddleboarding (ask for directions to the “river” or find it yourself), and the evening cultural experiences. Don’t be afraid of kava, just clap once and go for it! We opted to stay local and declined the excursions into town, just because the resort is so amazing that we didn’t want to leave. Seriously, if you’re lucky enough to have heard of this place and are considering it for a honeymoon or whatever, look no further, you’ve found what you’re looking for.

A bit of advice if you go: trust me, you’ll want to say thank you to each and every staff member you meet at Namale for their amazing hospitality. We’d heard a suggestion to bring bags of candy (Halloween style) as a small gift, as it’s difficult to obtain here and the kids love it. We brought some but wished we’d filled our suitcases! We had also heard that medical supplies are appreciated in the villages.

A huge thanks to all of the Namale staff for making this place what it is. We can’t wait to get back, even if it might be a few years. Vinaka!

OVERVIEW
The Namale Resort in Savusavu, Fiji is one of those resorts that will forever change the way you think about your hotel stay. When you first arrive to the tiny Savusavu airport, you are greeted by a friendly Namale staffer who takes you by air conditioned van to Namale. Before you enter the resort, you pass through humongous iron gates reminiscent of "Jurassic Park." As you make your way up to the registration area and pass through beautiful stretches of greenery, fruit trees and more, you know you're in for a treat. When you arrive to reception and the van doors is opened, you hear the sounds of Namale staff welcoming you with a traditional Fijian song. When you exit the van, you are taken inside and met with a cold fresh fruit beverage as you learn about the resort and your upcoming stay. There are only a dozen or so rooms on property so it never really seems too crowded and since it is so small, it's actually a nice way to make friends with some of the other couples who are there. Additionally, because of how intimate it is, the staff all learn your name and greet you every time you walk by, or do an activity, or eat a meal.

OUR ROOM
We stayed in the Susana burre, which is normally the closest to reception and the dining area (both of which were closed while we were there for remodeling so we dined at the farther restaurant and they turned the conference center into reception). When you get to your room, they have a sign on the door with your names that you can take home as a keepsake. Our burre was amazing and provided beautiful views from the the balcony as well as a mini plunge pool. Susana is one of the "honeymoon" burres and is quite spacious. When you enter, you're immediately in the "bedroom" with a lounge area attached that has a lovely bridge leading to the deck and the plunge pool. Past the lounge area there's a hallway with the closet and then the bathroom. The toilet and main part of the bathroom are separate. The only issue we had with our room is that we could never get the shower to work properly. It was either too hot or too cold. We had maintenance try and fix it, but to know avail. This is due to their "green" technology in the burres. We often ended up using the facilities in the spa, which was fine because we ended our days there relaxing in the hydrotherarpy tubs which are free of charge (See Spa Review).

THE PROPERTY
The property itself is about 500 acres and by no means did we see it all while we were there. They offer you a tour of the property and I highly recommend that you take this while you are there. You will get a better lay of the property and learn about all the things you can do such as activities like scuba diving and snorkeling (see review), dolphin encounter (see review), salt river jump (see review), horseback riding, paddleboarding, wakeboarding and more. They also have a game room on site that has a bowling alley, pool table, and more entertainment included. We didn't spend much time in here.

One of the best things they offer is a high to the Namale Waterfall. See more on that in my review.

The resort is 500 acres in total and has many luxury amenities so you never really need to leave the property. However, if you have the chance, there are several things you can do off property that I recommend doing. Do a town visit and if you can, go in on Saturday for the farmers market. On Sunday, you can attend a traditional Fijian church service. We did not do this, but I hear it's quite inspiration. They also offer visits to see a traditional village. Note that both men and women need to have no skin exposed when visiting so proper attire is required.

THE FOOD
Namale is all inclusive so you never have to worry about what you are going to eat or drink. They keep your fridge in your room stocked with plenty of beverages, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic and have plenty of Fiji water on hand. Meals include breakfast, lunch and dinner, which have set times, but you can order at the restaurant or in your room almost any time of day. I would give the food 4 out of 5 stars. The breakfast menu never changed so by day 3 or 4 I was looking to have something different. Lunch and dinner always offered new options (specials) and were quite good. The one thing I would have like was the opportunity to have more traditional Fijian food as the food was quite typical of what you would see on an American resort menu - steak, seafood, chicken, pasta, etc.

THE BEACH
If you're looking for white sandy beaches, rock-free and clear blue ocean waters, then this is not the place. Because this island is made from volcano, this island's geography and shore is made up of lava rocks. The resort beaches are very small and rocky, so reef shoes are a must if you're walking around, especially if you plan to go in the ocean. There is really no place for you to wade or swim in the water here. It's better to head to the dive shop and have the boat take you out to a safe place to snorkel.

OVERALL
Overall, my husband and I had a wonderful stay. If you're looking for a place that will treat you like royalty, this is it. Keep in mind this is a wonderful all-inclusive, but is more nature/green/lush tropical than say Bora Bora, which offers more of the beach experience.

As much of a cliche as it might be, Namale is an experience that cannot be put across in simple words. The location makes you feel like you are in paradise while the staff makes you feel like you are at home. Its a wonderful combination and by the end of our 5 days there, we felt as if we were leaving some place we had lived all our lives.

Each bure is different, which makes it especially difficult to decide which one you want to stay at! We took the easier (if somewhat greedy) route of shifting to a second bure during our stay. A third one seemed like it would be a bit too much!

The private waterfall picnic alone makes it worth flying half way around the world to get to this place. It is an experience like no other.

And the spa is also an experience in itself. You can see that someone put in a lot of heart and passion in building and maintaining this place.

To be honest, when I made the bookings for our honeymoon, I was a bit worried about how the actual experience would be. Not so much that I would not like it, but because it cost a good amount of money. By the time we were leaving, I felt even if they charged twice as much, it would still be worth every dollar (not that they should start charging more now!)

One thing you MUST keep in mind, this is a resort in the heart of nature. If you are mortally afraid of bugs, you may want to give this place a miss. However, I don't think it was too big a deal but worth pointing out.

Room Tip: Splurge a little and get the villa. Its the only thing that I can say we missed out on. Otherwise ea...

I write reviews when I travel but I have waited almost 3 months to write this review as I know it will be hard to find the words to describe the absolutely best travel experience of my life. My husband and I saw this resort on Oprah's greatest things 2011 show and we knew this was where we wanted to honeymoon after our 25th vow renewal. I actually have tears of joy writing this remembering all the staff and the warmth and love we felt from them. They are truly amazing people. If I had to write one negative thing it would be that the private pool in our nanise room was too cold to go into in October. The room, food, beverages and activities were amazing. Loved going to the Kava Bowl and having a party with a great group of people we met there. The champagne flowed thanks to being able to just pick up a house phone and order it. We made some new friends there that I am sure we will keep in touch with over the years. I just wish I had the contact information for Brenda and William who were guest sent by Oprah. Hint hint if you can help me with that.
There really are no words except book it. This is not a place to take a casual girl friend but the love of your life. If you are looking for the ultimate luxury stay Namale will surpass your wildest dreams.
Any questions feel free to message me.

Room Tip: Nanise is a romantic honeymoon sweet and you will love the sarongs and bath products provided.

My husband and I spent our 12th wedding anniversary at Namale. We had the most wonderful time and we will never forget the beauty and tranquillity of Namale Resort and Spa. We were upgraded to an ocean front bure, which was beautiful. The highlight was the pool right next door, which we practically had sole access to during our stay. The grounds were beautiful - truly, truly paradise. We did all the wonderful things other guests talk about, like lunch and swimming at the waterfall, horse back riding, scuba diving (where our boat was visited by a pod of dolphins), walks along the beach, dinner at 'lovers deck' and played games in the kava bowl (a massive room filled with bowling alley, virtual golf and other activities). The food was amazing, meals consisted of beautiful cuts of meat and fish with fresh fruit and vegetables. The fresh baked goods each day were simply delicious. The cocktails were awesome and always looked gorgeous. The bar tender (Siti) made whatever we asked him too. The nightly entertainment was great - especially the kava band (we loved those guys). The housekeeping was also really special - each day our bure was immaculately cleaned with messages in petals left on our (big beautiful comfortable) bed.
Like many people have said, it is the staff, however who really make Namale special. They were so friendly and warm. It was like being back home - that wonderful feeling of being looked after was amazing. A big thank you to Villi, Siti, Bale, Errol, Mau and all the other staff for making our time there so special. We loved our stay and will never forget the hospitality you showed us. We really hope to return, but if not we will always have our memories of the beautiful time we spent at Namale.
Vanaka to the team for making our time so special. You guys are all so amazing.
Warmest wishes to you all for a wonderful 2014
Debbie and Stephen.

Namale Resort offers guests looking for a vacation in paradise the ultimate in luxury and privacy. Guests have a choice of luxury villas, called bures, with responsive service from friendly staff. My bure had a beautiful infinity pool looking out over the Koro Sea. The guest to staff ratio is 3 staff for every guest so the service is great. PIck up the phone to order food or beverages to have it delivered to your bure. Choose from a myriad of activities on the 500-acre lush tropical resort, horseback riding, fitness center, ocean-side trampoline, diving, snorkeling, golf, spa or just relaxing. Dine in the lovely restaurant or select a romantic location for your special meal. This is an ideal place for a destination wedding, honeymoon or romantic escape.

Room Tip: Choose a room with private pool, it is worth it!

There is, literally, not one thing I can say that is bad about Namale. My husband and I stayed there through Christmas and New Year's Eve and from the moment we arrived until the moment we left the resort and especially the staff exceeded our every expectation. No sooner had we landed in Fiji at the Nadi airport than were we greeted by a Namale staff member who helped us check in for our connecting flight to Savusavu, and at the Savusavu airport we were met by another staff member who drove us to the resort --- and absolutely everything was handled for us for the rest of our stay.

The grounds are simply stunning -- beautifully landscaped and immaculately maintained. Just walking around the property feels like a visit to a botanical garden, and around every corner another gorgeous view of the Koro Sea awaits. We stayed in Duavata, and felt like we were living in a dream. The 'house' is really several connected bures with a private infinity pool overlooking the sea and numerous places to relax and enjoy the stunning beauty. It also has a luxury bathroom with a garden jacuzzi tub that looks out on the pool and the sea, two private outdoor bathrooms and it's own kitchen, and every day was restocked with beer, wine, fruit juice, sodas, water, amazing coffees, teas and fresh made cookies! The bed is like something out of a romance novel. Need I say more?

We paddle boarded, snorkeled, swam, played tennis, jumped on the water trampoline, hiked around the waterfall, swam under the waterfall, worked out in the gym, relaxed in the spa and did four scuba dives - included two at the phenomenal Namena Marine Reserve --- and must do for divers! We also enjoyed the nightly shows presented by local song and dance troupes and we drank a little kava, taking in some Fijian culture and traditions. We didn't get around to bowling, watching movies or playing any of the games in the recreation room -- but it looked like there was a lot to do in there, too.

The food at Namale is, without a doubt, the best we've ever had at any resort, spa or on any cruise, and is comparable to what you'd expect to find in a high-end California restaurant. Think: Decadently healthy. Lots of very fresh fish, vegetables and fruits and high quality meats, imaginatively prepared and gorgeously presented. We became addicted to the coconut chutney and requested it with nearly every meal!

But the best thing about our stay at Namale was, hands down, the staff. They are truly the friendliest people we've encountered anywhere. They were so easy to deal with, from start to finish, and extremely accommodating. Everyone at Namale seems to follow the lead of the co-general managers, Bill and Nowdla Keefe, who welcomed us warmly and worked tirelessly to make sure the trip was the best of our lives. They even planned a special New Year's Eve party for us and the other guests there — with a huge spread of delicious food, a live performance of Fijian dance, a magically decorated room and a DJ, dancing and balloon drop.

We enjoyed three 'special meals' while we were there: at the beach, the waterfall and the cave (as well as many special meals in the main bure and in Duavata). It amazed us how much effort had to go into the special meals, as the staff had to set up tables, light dozens of candles, decorate with fresh flowers, and then serve us food and drinks in a remote setting. And yet we never caught even a hint of grumble from any of the staff members about the extra work --- not like we'd expect from hospitality workers in the U.S.

This truly was the best trip of either of our lives and we will be forever appreciative of the efforts the Namale staff made to make it so.

Vinaka!
