“Amazing location, people and resort”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 3, 2009

My husband and I along with our 4 year old grand-daughter had a wonderful 7 night stay. The staff were just so genuinely friendly and always addressed us by name. The "Bula Club" for the children was well run with plenty of activities to keep the littlies occupied and the nanny designated to each child under 5 was an excellent service. Food was amazing, healthy and varied. My husband made use of the scuba diving and had nothing but praise for the staff. The Bures though not luxurious were very good and fitted in to the landscape beautifully. We didn't go to JMC to sit in our room!!! We will certainly be going back and taking the other grand-kids with us. We loved it!!!

We just returned from a fabulous week here and I promised myself I would post a review. This is the best family resort we've been to and we've sampled some high end ones, the last one being the Palmilla in Cabo San Lucas.

JMC is different and it may take a day or two to appreciate its enlightened, low-key charm. Highlights for us were:
-the outstanding friendliness of the Fijians
-the staff marine biologist who is available daily and will accompany divers and snorkelers and point out fascinating things on excursions
-one on one nannies/buddies (we got a young man for our 2 boys) who work 8am-9pm!
-fabulous food
-a responsible attitude toward the local people (despite their long hrs!) and environment
-great coral reefs and sea life

One thing to beware of: there is no AC. I didn't care but if being cool is important to you, go in June, July or August (their "winter") when it is cooler. And definitely pay up for the ocean front bure.

While very pricey, I don't quarrel with much of anything after our stay there. The food was great, our bure was very nice, the service was fantastic and we really enjoyed the twice daily guided snorkel trips. If you're into complete lounging, you could never leave. If you need variety, after four of five days of luxurious relaxation, it will be time to go. The nearby reefs are incredible, although the property does not really have a beach to speak of -- more of a shoreline. The daytrips we joined were a bit too dominated by young children for our taste as a adult travelers, but we knew going in that this resort accepted children and others did not. The staff was incredibly friendly and accommodating. This is much smaller and more refined than a run-of-the-mill all inclusive and if you enjoy more than a few cocktails or wine or go scuba diving, your outlay will be significantly higher than the already high prices. Factor into your costs the fairly steep cost of air travel to Savusavu from either Nadi or Suva.

My partner booked and paid for a week here, so I can't rate the "value" of the resort, but I know it was pricy.

But if you've got the bucks, it's worth it.

It seems most suited for families that want to have their young kids taken care of while they have some time to themselves, or for families with teenagers who want to do activities together.

Lots of serious divers here too. I snorkelled, and had a great time.

But we just wanted to relax, and that we did. The Bure on the point (#24) was the best of the bunch, the best view and location, the louvers on each side let the warm winds through day and night, it was isolated and gorgeous.

The staff were amazing, warm and friendly, it seems a nice place to work.

The food was amazing. Good-sized portions rather than too much, great desserts, great use of local ingredients.

I liked the overall philosophy - contributing to the community, environment, good food.

And it was amazing that with so many kids around and families, we still managed to have a wonderful, quiet, romantic holiday, the two of us.

Getting there and back was a bit of a hassle but worth it!

I felt compelled to write a review as I recently stayed here with my family and had the best holiday!
My husband and I stayed for a week with our 4.5 month old and 2 year old. We actually loved the fact there is no tv or radio or news - it is so wonderful to escape the humdrum. The island makes for a very healthy and relaxing break.
Our nannies were fabulous and we could not fault them in any way. Nothing was any trouble. We chose for our toddler to dine on the verandah each night instead of the bula club and it was magic. Hubby and I enjoyed a drink while one nanny helped with the toddler and the other took our little bub for a walk along the pier, before going back to the bure to bathe him ready for bed.
We felt very welcomed and all and sundry would dote on our wee bub. I have never left the children with anyone but our nannies were just superb. My husband and I enjoyed some first class meals and diving while our children were cared for in our bure or taken on various adventures around the island. We loved the diving and the service was fantastic in every way.
The kids club might not have flashy toys but to be honest I prefered that my toddler was out playing on the beach, in the pool, collecting crabs, painting coconuts, going for glass bottom boat rides etc
Everyone was so welcoming and friendly from groundskeeping staff to restaurant staff to housekeeping. We loved this place and will return again and again.

We spent one fantastic week at this resort. with our two boys then aged 7 and 9.

From the moment we arrived we could not help but be impressed by almost everything from the attention our two young boys received from the friendly staff to the beautiful setting of the resort itself. The courtesy bus and the meet and greet at Savu Savu airport helped us settle in to what was a very special week ahead.

The quality of food was exceptional and the separate areas for families and couples in teh restaurant worked well for those evenings where the boys wanted to eat with new friends or watch a movie in the Bula Club.
At first our boys were apprehensive about the Club but soon realised that it was more of an adventure opportunity than a chore with a great local guy to show them many traditional activities and give them his personal attention. In fact the term The term Kids Club is not really appropriate as this infers the more typical child centre or games room provided at many resorts. This was anything but typical.

The rooms were not lavish but we found them in keeping with the local setting and provided a high quality clean place for those few times we were inside. All of the staff were exceptionally friendly and we loved their enthusiasm for what they were doing.
The beach is not made for swimming but provides a gateway for the most spectacular sea life and coral reef opportunities.
We participated in as many of the organised events (from snorkeling to rainforest walks) as we felt we needed to without breaking the feeling of being away from the ratrace and totally relaxed. The snorkelling opportunities were spectacular and I am told (even though we don't dive) that this is of world standards.

When we returned to the main tourist area of Fiji it became glaringly obvious to us that the staff at Jean Michel were genuine in their hospitality and caring of their guests. The one moment which catured teh feelings we all shared for this special place was when we were leaving, the staff farewelling us and our boys and my wife in tears as we drove away

I would put this resort at the top of the list for those looking for a unique experience and wanting to spend quality time with a partner or family. We have already booked to go back in 2009.

We arrived for our family holdiday full of anticipation and left with mixed feelings.

The good:
Food: The food is sensational.Could not be faulted
Staff: Very friendly
Rooms: Generally pleasant but should be air conditioned and somewhat dark and musty.
Pool: Adult pool is lovely and the perfect temperature
The beach bures are definately worth paying the extra for in terms of location. simply sensational to lay on the sunbeds and looks at the stars
The not so good:
Management: One did not get the feeling the pair who manage the resort were genuine. They alternated between fakely friendly and cold and an air of annoyance if your kids were around. One got the distinct impression that they do not like children and tolerate them because it will maximise revenue. (As evidenced bythe great disparity between the kids area and the adults only area) The management appear to be very monetary focused and guest are put under pressure to provide a 10% tip ontop of their bill for staff. Also there is pressure to contribute toward the 'staff christmas' fund, the 'kids club' fund (I'm not sure where that money goes as the kids club is woeful in the toy department- a few shabby, worn out toys) Also to buy crabs in a crab race each week which cost US $50 a pop- this isfor charity for the local community, though they are not clear exactly what,. supporting the local community is a nice gesture. All the other $$ 'extra's' should not be asked for from guests as the room rate is already one of the most expensive in fiji and should cover staff cost, christmas club and kids club toy.
Kids Club: Disapointing. A few old toys, staff seem tired out and just chat amoungst themselves whilst looking after the children if no adult guests are around.
Nannies: Generally very good
What is most disapointing is the disparity between the standard of the kids club, kids pool and adult only' areas.
In Summary: you want to hand your kids over for your stay to nannies and have couple only time, you'll love it at Cousteau. If you want to actually spend time with your kids then you will do so in a 3 star environment. Would we go back? Probably not, despite the food being so great and the stars at night so magic.

  • Liked — The sensational food
  • Disliked — The management's attitude toward children
