“Going down hill”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 9, 2013

Most of teh staff are still brilliant, the food is still brilliant, but there have been some changes since our previous stays...no longer "Fiji" products in the room, just cheap hotel stuff. If your plane is cancelled you will be bundled off in a death defying bus ride to the other side of the island (in previous stays we were told you stay an extra night free). One of the staff kept asking for money and gifts. The complementary foot massage never came etc.

Just small changes and still a great place....but nothing like how good it was.

Fantastic if you have young children (0-5) and like the ideal of having a lovely Fijian nanny from sun up to almost midnight. Nannies and Bula Club (separate children area including pools & dining service) work well to keep young ones entertained. Service is very good and the Fijian people are very warm and friendly. It was listed as an eco lodge, but felt more like luxurious villas (called bures) albeit without air conditioning and spaced a little too close to each other for our liking.

Not recommended for couples or families with only older children (over 5 years of age) due to the emphasis on younger families. Diving Namena Marine Park was fabulous, but closer dives were a disappointment.

Room Tip: Lower numbers are closer to the restaurants but all bures are rather close to each other...a problem...

We have recently returned from a 6 night stay.. already planning our return trip for next year.
travelling with children can be hard work - not so at this resort! our 5 & 2 year olds loved the Bula Club, their nannies Beta & Linda were wonderful. While the kids were enjoying the Bula club my husband & I were able to relax knowing the kids were having a fabulous time. We loved being able to dine on our own for lunch & dinner each day. The food was amazing (my husband is a former chef and can be hard to please - he was very impressed by the food quality & choices on offer). We really enjoyed the snorkelling boat trips on offer & being able to snorkel off the pier was also great. The diving at the marine park is best my husband has ever done. The garden bure was perfect for 2 adults / 2 children (all in the 1 room). The private dinner on the pier was lovely and we enjoyed our private island visit (the nannies even come along to help out with the kids). The resort really is the full package - lovely bures, excellent food, the best childrens facilities, a great program of activites, world class diving and the staff were all so friendly - you can tell that they all love their jobs. We would usually have a 2 week holiday in Asia but couldnt spare the time - a week here is equal to our usual 2 week holiday. We all cant wait to holiday here again next year.

Amazing place, especially for the parents of an active 3 year old! The nannies and kids club were fantastic, and allowed my wife and I to actually have a holiday and relax (as opposed to 'childcare elsewhere', which is what many family holidays end up becoming).

The food was amazing, and the service so warm and friendly... I could go on, but I won't, just suffice to say that it was all perfect.

(The only downside was the large group of rather loud Americans who were staying there at the time, but I think this has made the management re-think their approach to booking in larger groups, so doubt it'll be a problem again!)

Room Tip: We had Bure 1, which was the closest to the pool/restaurant area... initially we were hesitant, wond...

Our most recent trip to Cousteau was our second in as many years and third overall. Simply, Jean-Michel Cousteau resort is your own little piece of paradise. Having stayed in resorts all over the World, it is by far one of the best that we have ever had the pleasure of enjoying.

Many people will be deterred by the extra-flight you need to take from Nadi to the resort, but it is totally worth the effort and experience. Cousteau offers you an all-inclusive experience which far outweighs any other resort you will experience near Nadi.

The "Bula Club" for the kids is fantastic and provides you with a place your kids can enjoy themselves, eat, play and do activities under the watchful eye of their own dedicated nannies/carers. While the adults can relax in their own reclusive pool area which is off-limits to kids.

The food is amazing and there wasn't a day that went past that a meal wasn't devoured by the kids or us.

Many people would think that being captive in such a resort you would be charged exorbitant fees for alcoholic drinks (soft drinks are included) and dry cleaning. Quite the contrary - booze is reasonable and the dry cleaning cheap by any hotel standard.

We highly recommend deep sea fishing, scuba diving, snorkeling, the private island and more. Make the best of your time there. The village visit is definitely worth the effort - the local Fijians just love to share.

Room Tip: They are all fantastic. The garden bures are still very close to the beach and we felt were better...

This was our 2nd stay at Jean-Michel Resort and our experiences last time led me to think I might have exaggerated how fantastic this resort was in my mind... But it was just as fantastic, actually this time better than last time. The style of resort is not your typical 'luxury' resort - not a 'Westin' or a 'Sheraton' - and you have to take a 2nd flight which might seem a bit of an ask, but it's totally worth it. The resort is small enough that there is always someone waiting to take your request but so well managed that you wouldn't ever know staff were just waiting for you to look for them. Our kids once again thought the Bula Club was so good - they swam most of the day, ate really simple and healthy meals with the other kids, made great friends and just really their nannies at the end (one each!). During the time they were there we kayaked, snorkelled (straight out from the beach the snorkelling is honestly better than the Barrier Reef and you get your own snorkel & flippers at the start of the holiday so you can use them whenever you like and then just give them back at the end); my husband loves fishing and did some deep sea fishing twice, I learned to scuba dive in the 'adults' pool, we played tennis, and we ate and drank. Of course, we had a wonderful time with the kids too and did so much with them, but so nice to know you have some help whenever you'd like. God what a trip. Totally recommended. If you are thinking about it, just bite the bullet and do it!

Room Tip: I'd recommend asking for a water front villa / bure though really it doesn't matter, all vil...

We enjoyed a 9 night stay in a 2 bedroom with our 3 children aged 2, 6 and 8. First impressions were typical of a 5 star tropical resort. Initially I was disappointed to discover that the beach wasn't a white sandy beach often associated with other Fiji islands we have been to. However I soon got over this! We normally travel with other families but this time we were by ourselves. The kids facilities and their buddies/nanny (Meli and Alesie) were truly amazing and made our stay truly wonderful. The kids had an absolute blast. Their days were actioned packed with snorkeling, kayaking, spear fishing, sword making, fishing etc. They truly had a magnificent time and it was not unusual for us to go a whole day with hardly seeing them! The private island picnic is well worth it. Here you get the white sandy beach and a lovely picnic set up for you under a bure amongst the island palms. The waterfall trip is also well worth attending. I would highly recommend this place if you have children. You won't be disappointed. We have travelled extensively in Fiji, Hilton, Vomo, Castaway, Malolo, Yasawa, Radisson, Intercontinental, Sheraton etc and this place would exceed all of the above for children's care, facilities and activities. The staff are truly amazing (but this is true for all of Fiji) and the food was of a high standard with a continuing changing menu. Children's meals were nutritious and varying and you could request alternatives if you wanted something different for your child to eat. You could choose to eat with your children at meal times or they could eat at Bula club. Rooms were typical of a 5 star tropical island. No air conditioning but we didn't miss this. Getting there is a bit of a pain! An hours flight from Nadi in an 18 seater. If its a windy day be prepared for a bumpy and hair raising landing! You land into a valley with cross winds that wobble the plane side to side. The pilots are obviously use to this as it didn't appear a problem to them! Talking to the other guests at the resort experienced the same landing so its obviously quite typical. Sadly for us the week we were there, the sun didn't make much of an appearance and it was quite windy most days. We think the climate here maybe several degrees milder than Nadi so take some cardigans for the evening. Any questions, please ask!
